First-Ever Home Match

(uj.edu) ) In front of a raucous home crowd that included North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum and First Lady Kathryn Burgum, the University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team extended its winning streak to four matches, defeating William Penn (Iowa) University 3-0 Friday night for their first-ever win at Harold Newman Arena. Set scores were 25-21, 25-15, 25-13.

The Jimmies (6-1) defeated the Statesmen for the second time in six days, with their previous win starting a streak of three straight 3-0 sweeps.

Jamestown dominated in every statistical category Friday, outhitting William Penn .338 to -.015 while racking up 39 kills to 17. UJ had eight service aces and had 30 digs to WPU’s 25. The Statesmen (2-7) generated the majority of their offense by taking advantage of 18 Jimmie service errors.

Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.) (12) and Clark Steele (JR/Lake Forest, Calif.) (11) both recorded double figure kill totals. Nick Vanags (FR/San Diego, Calif.) hit .833 on five kills while Austin Jacob (FR/Houston, Texas) had five kills and a .500 hitting percentage.

Derek Correa (FR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) passed out 22 assists, and Chase Robinson (FR/Kimberly, Wis.) added six more. Braden Neumann (JR/Costa Mesa, Calif.) racked up eight digs.

Jacob had three total blocks, followed by Steele, Cox, and Derek Owens (FR/Andover, Minn.) with two each.

UJ is off until February 28 when they travel to No. 6 Park (Mo.) and February 29 to 10th-ranked Ottawa (Kan.)

NOTE: The home match against Briar Cliff (Iowa) University originally scheduled for February 13 has been rescheduled for March 5 at 6 p.m.
