ST. Paul  (USACE)   -The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, is lowering its reservoir elevations within the Red River of the North basin based on recent snow measurements to prepare for potential spring snowmelt.

The Corps is currently lowering the elevation of Lake Ashtabula, located near Valley City, North Dakota. The current elevation is 1,258.7 feet, and it will be further drawn down to 1,257.0 feet in time for spring runoff.

Elevation at Homme Dam, near Park River, North Dakota, is currently at 1,075 feet, and it will be slightly lowered to 1,074 feet before spring runoff.

Reservation Dam, part of the Lake Traverse project, near Wheaton, Minnesota, is currently at 976.1 feet and will be lowered to 974.5 feet by the end of the month. White Rock Dam, also part of the Lake Traverse project, is currently at 1072.1 feet and will hold steady.

Red Lake Dam, near Red Lake, Minnesota, is currently at 1,175.5 feet and will hold steady due to high inflows.

A wet fall has caused above average stream flows for this time of year throughout the basin. River and reservoir levels may change more rapidly as ice forms than they have in the past due to the higher water levels this fall

Omaha (USACE) – To minimize the risk of ice-related flooding along the James River, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation will make an effort to keep downstream stages stable by holding releases at a constant rate.

As a result, elevations will be drawn down into the conservation zones at both Jamestown and Pipestem Dams.

Minimal impacts to other project purposes are expected, both due to the timing of this draw down and because of the volume of water currently frozen in the basin above the reservoirs. Releases are expected to be held constant until stages begin to rise between Jamestown and LaMoure, North Dakota from local flows.

Pipestem Dam is at an elevation of 1442.8 ft, 0.3 ft into its flood pool. Jamestown Dam is at an elevation of 1430.1 ft, 0.3 ft above its target elevation of 1429.8 ft. Both reservoirs are expected to be at or below their target elevations by March 1. Pipestem Dam is owned and operated by the Corps of Engineers, and Jamestown Dam is owned and operated by the Bureau of Reclamation. Releases are set by the Corps of Engineers for Jamestown Dam when the project is in its exclusive flood control pool (elevations 1431-1454 ft).

Current releases are 500 cubic feet per second from Jamestown Dam, and 100 cfs from Pipestem Dam, for combined releases of 600 cfs. The low-level gate at Pipestem has been opened to allow for constant releases.

The Corps of Engineers and Bureau of Reclamation are coordinating with relevant agencies in North and South Dakota.

Jamestown (CSi )  The Jamestown Area Grief Support Team is offering a grief support group for anyone who is grieving the loss of someone important to them, whether the loss is recent or from years past.  The group will meet once a week at 7:00 p.m. at the United Presbyterian  Church, 302 2nd Ave SE in Jamestown beginning on Monday, March 2, 2020 and will run for 6 weeks.

In his book, Understanding Your Grief, internationally recognized expert in the field of loss and grief, Dr. Alan Wolfelt states, “You can benefit from a connectedness that comes from people who have also had a death in their lives.  Support groups, where people come together and share the common bond of experience, can be invaluable in helping you and your grief and supporting your need to mourn long after the event of the death”

In our fast paced society, people who have had a significant loss are often expected to be ‘over it’ in a matter of a few weeks.  They may even expect this of themselves.  In reality, it may take years for someone to work through his or her grief.  The support group experience allows individuals to express grief in their own unique way and on their own unique timetable.

The group is free of charge, however, participants are asked to register to ensure that enough materials are available.  Participants should plan to attend all six sessions. For more information, or to register, please call Diane at 701-320-4915 or Eileen 701-269-4521.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Two people charged in the January death of a Bismarck man have pleaded not guilty. Earl Howard and Nikki Entzel pleaded not guilty Friday t in the death of Chad Entzel, 42. His body was found Jan. 2 after authorities responded to a call of a fire at a Bismarck home. An autopsy showed he died of gunshot wounds. Howard is charged with murder, arson, and three counts of conspiracy. Entzel is charged with three counts of conspiracy in her husband’s death. Each faces the possibility of life in prison if convicted.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A man shot and killed by Bismarck police last month did not fire at officers as authorities initially reported. But an investigation found he did point a handgun at them, justifying the use of deadly force. An investigation found Cody Carnes also had a handful of encounters with police in the two weeks leading up to his death that were tied to alleged drug use, mental health issues and threats against law enforcement. Burleigh County State’s Attorney Julie Lawyer on Monday said the shooting of Carnes was justifiable.

Valley City State then fell in their second game of the day to Mayville State, 10-5.

The Vikings are now 3-9 this season. Valley City State travels to Tucson, Ariz. to play eight games March 5-9. The Vikings open play against Mount Marty College on Thursday, March 5 at 10 a.m. CT.

Valley City State 21, University of Providence 4
The Vikings scored four runs in the first inning and never looked back in their defeat of the Argos Sunday. An RBI single from Marissa Hawkins put the Vikings on the board first, followed by a three-run home run from Riley Perryman.

A two-run double from Hawkins in the second inning allowed the Vikings to build upon their lead. An Argo error allowed Madison Gronau to score another run, followed by a two-run double from Autumn Perry that put the Vikings up 9-1 after just three innings of play.

Providence would score three runs over the next two innings as they still trailed the Vikings 9-4.

Valley City State exploded in the sixth inning for 12 runs on 10 hits Sunday. In the sixth inning alone, Renee Snyder, Kailee Fraser, Sierra Crocker, Perryman, Keana Harmon, and Gronau each collected RBI singles while Autumn Perry and Joelle Aiello each added RBI doubles for the Vikings.

The Vikings expired three straight batters in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 10-run rule victory over the Argos.

Perry went 5-for-5 including two doubles and three RBIs for the Vikings. Perryman added four RBIs while Hawkins contributed three. Crocker, Harmon, Fraser, Hawkins, Gronau, Snyder, and Perryman added two hits each for the Vikings.

Providence’s Kayla Moore took the loss for the Argos, giving up six runs on six hits and walking one.

Hannah VanDomelen and Hanna Tarum each had two hits and one RBI in Sunday’s game against the Vikings. Skyla Minert went 3-for-3 and scored two runs for the Argos.

Valley City State scored two runs in the bottom of the third to trail by just a run at 3-2.

The Comets scored seven runs over the last three innings to lead 10-2 in the middle of the seventh.

Sierra Crocker doubled to start the bottom of the seventh for the Vikings. Riley Perryman collected an RBI single to put the Vikings back on the board. Renee Snyder‘s RBI double scored Harmon and Perryman but that would be as close as the Vikings could get, falling to Mayville State 10-5.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – The Valley City State University football team has finalized its 2020 schedule, head coach Dennis McCulloch announced Friday, revealing that the Vikings will open the season at rival University of Jamestown.

The 122nd meeting of the storied Viking-Jimmie rivalry kicks off the 2020 season, Aug. 29 in Jamestown. The football rivalry with the Jimmies dates back to 1909, and the 2020 season opener will be the 74th meeting in the Paint Bucket Series, which dates back to 1961.

McCulloch said about starting the season at Jamestown, “That really ratchets the intensity up right away.  Last year’s atmosphere in Valley City for the season opener was something special, and this year at Jamestown should be no different.”

The Vikings and Jimmies have opened the season against each other the past two seasons, with the home team winning both contests. The Vikings currently lead the all-time series with Jamestown, 63-53-5, and lead the Paint Bucket Series 42-31. The Vikings have won nine of the last 10 meetings since 2014.

Following the season opener at Jamestown, the Vikings will host Doane University for the 2020 home opener on Sept. 5. It will also be the third annual VCSU Ag Bowl, celebrating the importance of agriculture in the community. Doane has been a traditionally strong program in the Great Plains Athletic Conference, but slipped below .500 last season and finished with a 4-7 overall record.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Sungjae Im started fast and finished stronger in the final round of the PGA’s Honda Classic, winning the event by one shot over Mackenzie Hughes and Tommy Fleetwood.

Im shot a 4-under 66 on Sunday to earn his first PGA Tour victory in 50 starts. The 21-year-old South Korean finished at 6 under to match the second-highest winning score since the Honda moved to PGA National in 2007.

Fleetwood started the day one shot clear of the field and started birdie-birdie to get to 7 under, matching what was the low score in relation to par of the week. Fleetwood is still seeking his first PGA win.

WORLD CUP-WOMEN’S COMBINED

Brignone wins combined title

LA THUILE, Italy (AP) — Federica Brignone (feh-deh-REE’-kah breen-YOH’-nay) won the Alpine combined World Cup title without clicking into her skis. And the Italian might end up winning the overall and giant slalom globes as well without any further racing this season.

Heavy snowfall caused the cancellation of the Alpine combined race on Sunday. That handed the season title to Brignone, who won both combined races that took place this season.

Brignone is 153 points ahead of three-time overall champion Mikaela Shiffrin, who remains on a break from racing following the death of her father.

In world and national news…

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — China is reporting its lowest number of new virus infections in six weeks and hundreds of patients in the stricken city that is the outbreak’s epicenter are being released from hospitals. But those hopeful signs are paired with increasing anxiety elsewhere in the world, with soaring numbers of cases in Iran, South Korea and Italy. Major cities including Jakarta, New York and Berlin are grappling with their first recorded cases and nine of the 10 biggest countries in the world are now reporting the virus. People around the globe are warily monitoring economic fallout from the crisis, but Asian financial markets saw signs of life Monday, with mainland Chinese benchmarks gaining 3%.

PARIS (AP) — A global agency says the spreading new virus could make the world economy shrink this quarter. That would be a first since the international financial crisis more than a decade ago. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development says the world economy is still expected to grow overall this year and rebound next year. But it lowered its forecasts Monday for global growth in 2020 in a special report about the effect of the coronavirus. It said China’s reduced production is hitting Asia particularly hard. It urged governments to act fast to prevent contagion and restore consumer confidence.

MILAN (AP) — The coronavirus outbreak in northern Italy has so overwhelmed the public health system there that officials are taking extraordinary measures to care for the sick. Regional officials are seeking to bring doctors out of retirement and accelerate graduation dates for nursing students. The region of Lombardy has been the epicenter of Italy’s outbreak, registering the first positive test and now counting 984 of Italy’s 1,694 cases. Most alarmingly, 10% of Lombardy’s doctors and nurses can’t work because they tested positive for the virus and are in quarantine. With officials saying they expect Italy’s numbers to continue rising for at least another week, until containment measures begin to take effect, the health care emergency in Lombardy has reached a crisis point.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union and Britain are kicking off long-awaited trade talks on Monday amid tensions over Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s threat to walk away if not enough progress is made in four months. Four days of talks are taking place in Brussels. The teams will meet every 2-3 weeks, alternating between Brussels and London. The crunch time will come at the end of June. Under the Brexit divorce deal, that’s the final opportunity for Britain to extend a transition period aimed at helping to ease it out of the bloc. That means a trade deal has to be agreed by the end of this year. Most trade deals take years to conclude.

The CEO of wireless networks company Nokia is stepping down from the post and will be succeeded by an energy executive. The company said Monday that Pekka Lundmark will take on the role on Sept. 1 from Rajeev Suri. Lundmark is currently president and CEO of Finnish energy company Fortum. Nokia said Suri had previously told its board that he was considering stepping down from his role at some point, provided a solid succession plan was in place. Suri has worked at Nokia for 25 years and will leave his post on Aug. 31. He will serve as an advisor until Jan. 1, 2021.
