Very warm weather is expected Friday and Saturday and that will cause
additional snowmelt across parts of central North Dakota where
snowpack remains.
The snowpack in the James River and Pipestem Creek watersheds is
deeper and will be more resilient to melting, but temperatures will
be warm enough to generate some runoff in the coming days. Cooler
weather is forecast to arrive early next week and will result in a
favorable melt pattern. Even so, snowmelt runoff generated this
weekend may slowly make its way toward Pipestem Creek and the James
River, which may start to cause rising water levels next week.
Additional runoff is likely once temperatures begin to warm up again
by the middle of next week, too.

Jamestown 1 Minot State 0
Jamestown (uj.edu) On a night where the University of Jamestown hockey team honored its 14 graduating seniors, the No. 12 Jimmies pulled out a 1-0 victory over in-state rival, the No. 5 Minot State University Beavers.
It was a memorable night as the graduating class of 2020, who started the program four years ago, won their final home game at John L. Wilson Arena. It was the eighth meeting between the two teams, and the Jimmies hold the upper hand in the season series with a record of 6-2. The Jimmies also take a 1-0 advantage in the ND Challenge Series, which concludes tomorrow night in Minot.
Kyle Baron (SR/Abbotsford, British Columbia) scored the lone goal in a fast-paced battle between the Beavers and the Jimmies. In the dying seconds of the second period, Allan Pruss (SR/Red Deer, Alberta) retrieved a dump-in from Michael Pruss (SR/Red Deer, Alberta) and sent a pass to Baron, who beat the buzzer to make the score 1-0 for the Jimmies. The goal was a power play marker and Baron’s second of the season. The score held throughout the third period, with both teams getting quality scoring chances and having 15 shots apiece.
Tyson Brouwer (SR/Lethbridge, Alberta) was perfect in net stopping all 38 shots he faced, en route to his 23rd win and sixth shutout of the season. The Jimmies fired 47 shots on the Beavers net.
Jamestown was 1-6 on the power play while Minot State was 0-5.
Both teams will meet again tomorrow night in Minot to conclude the ND Challenge Series. This home-and-home series serves as a preview for the upcoming ACHA National Tournament in Frisco, Texas, as these same two teams will meet on March 21st in an opening round matchup.
TOKYO (AP) — The head of the Tokyo Olympics on Friday said organizers are downsizing the arrival ceremony in Japan for the Olympic torch on March 20 because of the spreading coronavirus.
Organizing committee President Yoshiro Mori also said that 140 children will not be sent to Greece to give the flame a send-off on March 19. The Olympic torch will be lighted on March 12 in a ceremony in Greece and then flown to Japan to arrive on March 20. It is to arrive in Miyagi in northern Japan at a Japan Air Self-Defense base.
The International Olympic Committee and local organizers have repeated over and over that the Olympics will open as scheduled, and the Paralympics are set to begin on Aug. 25. Virologists, however, say it’s impossible to tell if the spreading virus will allow that to happen, and a cancellation or a postponement are possible. Twelve deaths in Japan have been attributed to the virus. China is reporting more than 3,000 deaths from the virus. Outbreaks are surging in Italy, Iran, and South Korea.

Kansas denies NCAA accusations
LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — The University of Kansas has forcefully objected to charges that its storied men’s basketball and its football programs had committed significant violations tied primarily to recruiting.
The school let its objections be known in nearly 300 pages of documents it issued as a formal response to the NCAA’s notice of allegations Thursday night.
Kansas claims several facts involving Bill Self’s basketball program are in dispute, including charges that Kansas lacked institutional control and its Hall of Fame coach and his assistant, Kurtis Townsend, had committed a series of high-level violations.
The NCAA issued last September its original notice of allegations which included five violations for men’s basketball and two lesser ones for football. The basketball violations are all Level 1, the most severe.

Sale has a flexor strain, leading Bosox to get McHugh
UNDATED (AP) — Boston Red Sox ace Chris Sale has a flexor strain near his left elbow and will not be scheduled for Tommy John surgery — for now.
The 30-year-old left-hander felt discomfort in his pitching elbow Monday, a day after throwing his first batting practice of spring training. He had an MRI that was reviewed by team physicians and elbow specialists.
Sale’s ulnar collateral ligament was treated with a platelet-rich plasma injection last Aug. 19 and did not sustain additional damage.
With Sale’s season in doubt, the Red Sox and right-hander Collin McHugh have worked out a one-year contract worth a guaranteed $600,000, a deal that allows him to earn up to $4.25 million. The 32-year-old McHugh was 4-5 with a 4.70 ERA in 35 appearances for the Astros last season, working primarily out of the bullpen. He was a 19-game winner in 2015, but he’s won just 15 games over the last three seasons.
In other MLB news:
— The White Sox have agreed to a five-year, $70 million contract with Yoán Moncada, a deal that includes a $25 million club option for 2025 that would make the agreement worth $90 million for six seasons. The White Sox acquired the 24-year-old Moncada in the December 2016 trade that sent Chris Sale to the Red Sox. The third baseman broke out last season by setting career highs with a .315 batting average, 25 homers and 79 RBIs.
— Aaron Judge hasn’t given up on being ready for the Yankees’ opener at Baltimore on March 26, but still doesn’t know the cause of soreness in his right pectoral muscle and shoulder. The star right fielder has undergone more than half a dozen tests, and more are scheduled. Judge stopped workouts about a week before spring training after experiencing soreness while swinging. Then he felt soreness on Feb. 28 while hitting in an indoor cage for the second consecutive day.
— The Cubs have scratched pitcher Yu Darvish and second baseman Jason Kipnis because of illness. In a series of tweets in Japanese, Darvish said he had a cough yesterday and expressed reluctance about entering the clubhouse amid the coronavirus outbreak. He posted that he didn’t have a fever or the flu. Theo Epstein, the president of baseball operations for the Cubs, said he didn’t have “full information right now,” but said it was his understanding Darvish had a daily illness and should be fine by tomorrow.
— Jerry Koosman’s No. 36 is being retired by the Mets, more than four decades after he threw his final pitch for the team. Koosman will be honored before the June 13 game against Washington. Koosman was runner-up for the 1968 NL Rookie of the Year and won 21 games for the 1976 Mets. His five-hitter beat Baltimore in the 1969 World Series for the Mets’ first title.

Williams will be paid more than $2 million next season as a key part of the defense that helped the Niners reach the Super Bowl this year.

Ratification requires a simple majority based on the number of returned ballots.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is expected to sign an $8.3 billion measure on Friday to help tackle the coronavirus outbreak. The legislation would provide federal public health agencies money for vaccines, tests and potential treatments and help state and local governments prepare for and respond to the threat. The money would pay for a multifaceted attack on a virus that is spreading more widely every day, sending financial markets spiraling, disrupting travel and potentially threatening the U.S. economy’s decade-long expansion. The plan would more than triple the $2.5 billion amount outlined by the White House 10 days ago.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Results were expected Friday after passengers and crew were tested for coronavirus aboard a cruise ship held off the California coast. A passenger on an earlier voyage of the ship died of the disease, and at least four others became infected. While more than 3,500 aboard the Grand Princess were ordered to stay at sea, only 45 people were tested. A military helicopter delivered test kits to the Grand Princess, which is anchored off San Francisco. Meanwhile, the U.S. death toll from the coronavirus has reached 12 and infections swell to more than 200 cases, scattered across 18 states.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — People arriving in Thailand from six countries and territories will have to submit daily reports on their health as a measure against the spread of the new virus. Thailand’s Public Health Ministry announced the new regulation Friday after officially designating South Korea, China, Macao, Hong Kong, Italy and Iran as “dangerous communicable disease areas.” Both Thai citizens and foreigners who visited those areas must produce daily reports on their health and their whereabouts for 14 days, with officials collecting the information either online or by phone. The government has been reluctant to impose broad restrictions on travelers because of concerns that would affect Thailand’s huge tourism industry.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. economy likely added jobs at a solid pace in February before an escalation of the coronavirus outbreak disrupted factory supply chains, slowed business travel and heightened economic fears. Economists estimate that employers added 170,000 jobs and that the unemployment rate held at a low 3.6%. The government will release its report Friday at 8:30 a.m. Eastern time. The forecast suggests that the viral outbreak has yet to produce a measurable impact on the job market. The data for Friday’s jobs report was gathered mainly in the second week of February, before the virus began to spread through the United States.
TOKYO (AP) — World stock markets are down sharply again as pessimism prevails over the economic impact of the virus outbreak. European shares are down over 3% after Asia closed sharply lower on Friday. Futures on Wall Street are down by over 2%, suggesting another big drop on the open. The growing understanding that the spread of virus infections — and resulting damage to the economy — may not slow anytime soon is pulling sharply on markets. the price of oil is down more than 4% amid doubts about whether the OPEC cartel can agree with Russia on cutting production.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Afghan officials say gunmen killed 27 people and wounded at least 55 others in Afghanistan’s capital. The attack has targeted a remembrance ceremony for a minority Shiite leader. The Taliban have denied they were behind the attack. While no one has claimed responsibility for carrying it out, Afghanistan’s upstart Islamic State affiliate has declared war on the country’s minority Shiites. Afghan security forces are still trying to flush the gunmen out of a half-finished apartment building. The attack comes just days after the United States and the Taliban signed an ambitious peace deal. Any U.S. troop pullout would be tied in part to promises by the Taliban to fight terrorism.
