GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KFGO-AM) — About 50 first responders paraded through a North Dakota city with emergency lights activated to honor a police officer who was shot to death by a man being served with an eviction notice. Hundreds of people gathered Wednesday night outside a hospital in Grand Forks where a sheriff’s officer who was wounded in the exchange of gunfire is recovering. Police say Salamah Pendleton opened fire on two Grand Forks County sheriff’s deputies and two police officers who tried to serve the eviction papers to him on Wednesday afternoon. A woman was also shot to death. Details of her killing have not been released.

Update:   KVLY Grand Forks Police say Deputies with the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Office tried to serve eviction-related paperwork about 2:30-p.m. Wednesday  to 41-year-old Salamah Q. Pendleton who lives at 2627 South 17th Street in unit 303.

Officers say Pendleton initiated gunfire toward the deputies. The deputies called for emergency assistance. Officers say during the incident, two GFSO and two GFPD officers, Salamah Pendleton and one female were all in the apartment.

Lt. Derik Zimmel, a spokesman for the Grand Forks Police Department, says, it quickly escalated into gunfire, initiated by Pendleton.

Pendleton received gunfire injuries and is currently being treated at Altru. The female in the apartment died of her gunshot injuries.

One deputy is in stable condition at Altru with non-life-threatening injuries and one Grand Forks Police officer did not survive.

– Gov. Doug Burgum released the following statement after a Grand Forks Police Department officer was fatally shot today while responding to a shooting incident at an apartment building. A Grand Forks Sheriff’s Office deputy also was wounded in the incident, which claimed the life of a woman in the apartment and left the man authorities say initiated the shooting with gunfire injuries.

“Kathryn and I extend our deepest condolences to the family of the Grand Forks police officer who made the ultimate sacrifice today in the line of duty. We ask all North Dakotans to pray for his loved ones, for the recovery of the injured deputy and for the continued safety of all law enforcement officers,” Burgum said. “This is a tragic reminder of the risk our brave men and women in uniform face every day when they put on the badge to protect our communities. We’re deeply grateful for the officers and deputies whose swift action prevented further loss of life, and we join the Grand Forks Police Department, Chief Mark Nelson and the entire law enforcement community in mourning this devastating loss.”

 

In accordance with Governor’s Office policy, the United States and North Dakota flags will be flown at half-staff from dawn to dusk as a sign of respect and honor on the day of the fallen officer’s interment. A formal flag directive will be issued when arrangements are set.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (KNOX-AM) — Police say two law enforcement officers and a suspect were shot at a Grand Forks apartment complex, on Wednesday afternoon. Authorities say two deputies were serving papers on a man when he began shooting. KNOX radio reports that other officers responded to the scene. Police say a woman was found dead in the apartment. A Grand Forks police officer and Grand Forks County sheriff’s deputy were shot. Conditions on the officer and the suspect were not available. No further details have been released.
