Elaine Haugen – Sunday June 14, 2020

Elaine Haugen, 84, of Jamestown, ND, died on Sunday, June 14, 2020 in Jamestown, North Dakota.

Elaine Esther Staael was born August 8, 1935 in Sanish, ND, the daughter of Jess Otto and Anna Christie (Anderson) Staael. She attended St. Agnes Academy in Kenmare, ND and in 1949 transferred to the North Dakota School for the Blind in Bathgate, ND, graduating in 1955. Elaine attended the University of North Dakota and graduated in 1959 with a degree in Social Work. On February 14, 1959, she married Robert Boutin at Kenmare, ND. She received post-graduate education at several colleges.

She worked as a certified Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the state of North Dakota for 30 years and, as a licensed social worker, worker for Ward County Family Services. Robert died in 1973.

On May 24, 1987, Elaine married Gene Haugen in Jamestown, ND and they settled in Jamestown.

Elaine was an active member of the Baha’i Faith since 1961 where she held many offices and served as a Home Front Pioneer. She was also an active member of the American Association of University Women and became a charter member of the National Rehabilitation Counseling Association in 1964.

Survivors include her husband, Gene, Jamestown, ND; two children, Susan Delzer, Minneapolis, MN and Thomas (Lynell) Haugen, Mansfield, ND; 10 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; 2 siblings, Margaret (Gerald) Indvik, Bellavista, CA, and Mary Ann Staael, Bellavista, CA.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, first husband, and brothers; Paul Anthony and Martin (Frances) Staael.

A Memorial Service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Williams Funeral Home, Jamestown.
