DALTON, Minn. (AP) — Forecasters have rated a deadly tornado that struck farmland in western Minnesota as a category EF4, with a peak wind conservatively estimated at 170 mph. The National Weather Service said the tornado started as a weak tornado that grew out of a rapidly developing supercell thunderstorm, quickly growing into a violent twister that killed one person and injured two others near Dalton on Wednesday evening. The tornado was on the ground about a half hour, according to the weather service. The tornado ripped a path about 9 miles long, with a maximum width of 650 yards. A 30-year-old man was killed when the tornado destroyed a machine shop. A couple suffered minor injuries when the tornado obliterated their home.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Fargo city leaders have asked North Dakota’s top law enforcement officer to investigate the city’s former deputy police chief who went undercover without telling anyone during a May gathering in memory of George Floyd. Deputy Chief Todd Osmundson resigned following a May 30 gathering that turned violent. Documents released by the police department showed that several officers were upset to see the 31-year veteran of the force change out of his police uniform and into civilian clothes to infiltrate protesters. Osmundson initially was suspended for his actions but later resigned.

In world and national news…

MIAMI (AP) — President Donald Trump is visiting the critical battleground state of Florida to raise campaign cash and tend to issues of high interest there for his base supporters. But his effort to relaunch campaign travel after a hiatus caused by a nationwide surge in coronavirus cases has hit another snag. Trump canceled a weekend rally in New Hampshire because a tropical storm is threatening the area. The Portsmouth rally was scheduled after aides spent weeks studying what went wrong at ‘Trump’s sparsely attended rally in Tulsa three weeks ago. Even before the storm threat emerged, campaign officials had acknowledged that it was unclear how many people would attend the New Hampshire rally.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Protesters who have clashed with authorities in Portland, Oregon, are not just facing off with local police. They are also coming up against federal officers whose presence in the city reflects a new priority for the Department of Homeland Security: preventing what President Donald Trump calls “violent mayhem.” DHS has deployed officers in tactical gear from around the country under an executive order to protect federal property and monuments. The deployment seems to have helped ease violence in Portland, but it has raised questions about whether DHS is using its vast resources to help with the president’s law-and-order themed campaign.

(AP)  A medical association that the White House has cited in its press to reopen schools is pushing back against President Donald Trump’s repeated threats to cut federal funding if schools don’t open this fall. In a joint statement with national education unions and a superintendents group, the American Academy of Pediatrics on Friday said decisions should be made by health experts and local leaders. The groups wrote that “withholding funding from schools that do not open in person full-time would be a misguided approach and could ”threaten the health of students and teachers.” But Trump repeated his threat on Friday, saying on Twitter that virtual learning has been “terrible.”

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Indiana Republicans have scuttled Attorney General Curtis Hill’s bid for reelection following a monthlong suspension of his law license over allegations that he groped a state lawmaker and three other women during a party. Former U.S. Rep. Todd Rokita prevailed Friday in mail-in voting by state convention delegates. The state Republican chairman said Rokita defeated Hill with 52% of the vote in a third round of voting after two lesser-known candidates finished last in previous rounds. Rokita said he entered the race because Hill had a history of “bad judgment, bad choices and not taking responsibilities” marring his time as state government’s top lawyer.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — A group of citizens in Norman, Oklahoma, is launching a recall petition drive to oust the city’s mayor and half of its City Council. The group, “Unite Norman,” is upset with the council over its decision last month to reallocate $865,000, or about 3.6%, of the police department’s annual budget. The money was shifted to community development programs and to create an internal auditor position to track police overtime and outlays. Many residents in Oklahoma’s third-largest city are also upset with Mayor Breea Clark’s decision to impose a requirement that people wear masks in public. Oklahoma is among the states that have seen a surge in COVID-19 cases since relaxing restrictions.

Amazon has told employees to delete the popular video app TikTok from phones on which they use Amazon email, citing security risks from the China-owned app, according to reports and social-media posts by Amazon employees, and escalating the stakes for TikTok, which has been subject to national-security and geopolitical concerns. The notice said employees must delete the app by Friday to keep access to Amazon email. Amazon is the second-largest U.S. private employer after Walmart, with with more than 840,000 employees worldwide. Amazon and TikTok did not immediately reply to requests for comment.

NEW YORK (AP) — Lawyers of a close associate of Jeffrey Epstein want her released from jail as she awaits trial in her sex abuse case. British socialite Ghislaine Maxwell is being held without bail at New York City jail on charges she helped Epstein recruit young women and girls so he could sexually exploit them. Court papers filed Friday ask a judge to release her to home confinement. A judge has set a hearing for Tuesday to hear bail arguments and to arraign Maxwell on multiple charges, including that she conspired to entice girls as young as 14 to engage in illegal sex acts with Epstein from 1994 through 1997. The 58-year-old Maxwell has denied any wrongdoing.
