(CSi) A Pedestrian was struck by a car in the 200 block of 1st Avenue North, adjacent to an alley on the west side of the street about 11:10 am Monday. The vehicle was southbound in the driving lane, at a low speed at the time of impact. The pedestrian was not in a crosswalk.

Jamestown police and Jamestown Area Ambulance Service were on scene to assist, along with the Jamestown City Fire Department Ready Squad and Jamestown City Street Department.

The traffic signals in the near area at 3rd St & 1st Ave North and 4th St & 1st Ave North had been turned off as a test of the Road Diet plan, to eliminate 5 signals on 1st Ave through downtown Jamestown. Concerns have been raised of fast traffic and difficulty for pedestrians to cross 1st Ave with nothing stopping or slowing traffic.

More on this story as information is available.

Omaha  (USACE) –  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, has increased the water  releases from Jamestown Dam (North Dakota)  to 350 cubic feet per second, and increase from 250 cfs.

On Monday the pool elevation at Jamestown Dam was 1431.9 feet, almost one foot into the flood control pool. Continued rains in the upper basin have increased flows into the reservoir.

The current pool elevation at Pipestem Dam (North Dakota) is 1461.7 feet, about 20% into its flood pool. Releases are 500 cfs.  This release is expected to stay constant for the remainder of the summer. The target date for flood control evacuation at Pipestem Dam is Sept. 1.

The total combined releases with these gate changes is 850 cfs. Releases were coordinated with the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation and the City of Jamestown. Weekend rains caused flooding downstream in the Elm River basin, which enters the James River near Columbia, South Dakota.  The release increases from Jamestown Dam will not impact current flooding near Columbia due to the long travel time between Jamestown and Columbia. Basin conditions will continue to be evaluated, and releases will be modified as necessary.

In world and national news…

(AP)  Volunteers rolled up their sleeves Monday to take part in the biggest test yet of an experimental COVID-19 vaccine. The first of some 30,000 volunteers were receiving shots created by the U.S. government as part of the all-out global race to stop the outbreak. It will be months before results trickle in. Meanwhile, President Donald Trump’s national security adviser tested positive for the virus. And there were setbacks in efforts to restart American baseball, with two major league games canceled because of a outbreak, and for Europe’s plans to restart tourism, with rising infection rates in Spain causing concern for that country’s neighbors.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Speaker Nancy Pelosi says Republicans and the White House should start now to negotiate with Democrats to resolve their differences over a pandemic relief package. She says “time is running out” because federal unemployment assistance and an eviction moratorium expire Friday. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is set to try again to roll out the Republicans’ $1 trillion proposal Monday afternoon. At the same time, the White House is suggesting a narrower pandemic relief package may be all that’s possible. Pelosi has invited them to her office after McConnell unveils his bill to hammer out a compromise with Democrats.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The body of the late Rep. John Lewis has arrived at the U.S. Capitol Rotunda as lawmakers gather to pay tribute to the long-time Georgia lawmaker and icon of the civil rights movement. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi led a delegation to Joint Base Andrews in Maryland to greet Lewis’s flag-draped casket, and she will deliver remarks at Rotunda ceremony. A motorcade carrying the body stopped at Black Lives Matter Plaza near the White House as it wound through Washington on its way to the Capitol, where he is the first Black lawmaker to lie in state in the Rotunda. Vice President Mike Pence and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden are scheduled to pay their respects at the Capitol later Monday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police are reporting a drop in homicides and shooting incidents after the department rolled out two units designed to combat gun violence and ensure protests remain peaceful. Superintendent David Brown said during a news conference Monday that the city reported three homicides over the weekend compared to 12 the weekend before. It was the first weekend that the 300-member Community Safety Team was dispatched to communities on the West and South sides where there has been an uptick in violent crime. He says there were no major problems at any of the large gatherings where the 250-member Critical Incident Response Team was assigned.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks Monday afternoon were rising on Wall Street Monday, while the price of gold rushes to a record high at the start of a week packed with potentially market-moving events. The S&P 500 was 0.5% higher in afternoon trading following mixed, modest moves for stocks overseas. This week’s headline event may be a two-day meeting for the Federal Reserve on interest rates that begins Tuesday. It’s also a heavy week for earnings reports, and Congress is debating more aid for the economy. Nervousness is still hanging over markets, which helped gold shoot above $1,940 per ounce for the first time.

NEW YORK (AP) — In the latest plan for Hollywood’s hopeful return to moviegoing during the pandemic, Warner Bros. will release Christopher Nolan’s “Tenet” in an unprecedented fashion. The highly anticipated film will open internationally first on Aug. 26, with a U.S. release in select cities to follow over Labor Day weekend. Warner Bros. on Monday says “Tenet” will arrive in more than 70 countries, including Japan, Russia, much of Europe, Australia and Canada. The staggered release of the $200 million thriller will be tailored to outbreaks of COVID-19. Instead of the usual global launch of a summer blockbuster, “Tenet” will make its way through theaters as they are open.
