BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Interim committee meetings for North Dakota lawmakers have been cancelled at least through next week after a member of the Legislature’s research arm tested positive for COVID-19. Legislative Council Director John Bjornson says the staff member who had tested positive for the coronavirus told him Sunday night. Bjornson said he notified legislative leaders early Monday. He says he encouraged all 32 of his staff to get tested for the coronavirus. The agency includes accountants and attorneys. Bjornson says the staff member is not believed to have had close contact with any lawmaker over the past several days.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say all North Dakota counties are aiming to have in-person voting as an option during the state’s November election. The move is reversal from the June primary when all polling places were closed statewide by local officials out of concern amid the coronavirus outbreak. North Dakota County Auditors Association Executive Director Donnell Preskey Hushka says local election officials have more time to plan and for the upcoming election and more personal protective equipment is available. Secretary of State Al Jaeger says his staff has been holding weekly meetings with county officials to discuss the upcoming election, including precautions.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Declaring it’s “crunch time” for the upcoming election, President Donald Trump zeroed in on Midwest battleground states on Monday with a tough, law and order message to counterprogram former Vice President Joe Biden’s show at the Democrats’ convention. Trump is in Minnesota and is headed later in the day to Wisconsin, the official host state for the entirely-virtual Democratic National Convention. The GOP has a week of travel and political events aimed at blunting the customary polling “bounce” that candidates get during their convention.

(AP) ESPN’s, CSi Cable 14, 84.14 HD new Monday Night Football team of Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Louis Riddick will debut on Sept. 14 when they call the late game between the Tennessee Titans and Denver Broncos. The three are familiar with each other. They called the late game in last season’s Week 1 doubleheader between Denver and Oakland. They replace the duo of Joe Tessitore and Booger McFarland. Ratings had increased the past two seasons but the announcing was widely criticized. ESPN is hoping this booth has more staying power. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit will call the early game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants.
In world and national news…
NEW YORK (AP) — Several individuals including candidates for public office are suing President Donald Trump and the new postmaster general of the U.S. Postal Service in New York to ensure adequate funding for postal operations. The lawsuit was filed Monday in Manhattan federal court. The lawsuit alleges that Trump and his newly appointed Postmaster General Louis DeJoy are trying to ensure the postal service cannot reliably deliver election mail. The lawsuit seeks a court order to force adequate funding of the postal service prior to November’s election. A message seeking comment was left with the Justice Department.
NEW YORK (AP) — President Donald Trump is again threatening to send federal agents to New York City if local authorities don’t stop a surge of violence that has left seven people dead and more than 50 people shot since Friday. Trump, who’s running for re-election on a law-and-order agenda as a counterweight to the police and criminal justice reform movement, reacted to the news of the mayhem in his hometown Sunday night on Twitter. According to police, 51 people were shot from Friday through Sunday, six of whom died from their injuries. Another man died after a physical altercation, police said. Eight people were shot and five people were killed over the same span last year.
CHICAGO (AP) — Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown says video of weekend clashes between officers and protesters shows a “concerted effort” by protesters to provoke violence by the police. At a news conference on Monday, Brown defended his officers and said it’s clear they acted professionally and responded appropriate to violence that left several of them injured. He says video shows people in the crowd doing things like putting on gas masks, changing clothes to hide their identities and opening umbrellas to shield from view people throwing projectiles at officers. Many activists and some lawmakers, though, say the police were the aggressors.
ATLANTA (AP) — The Democratic Party will convene, sort of, amid a pandemic that has upended the usual pomp-and-circumstance of presidential nominating conventions. Monday’s session will be the first night of four when Democrats meet online and broadcast to voters two hours of live and pre-taped programming. The convention will air from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Eastern time. The Democratic National Committee will provide the official livestream online and on its social media channels. CNN, C-SPAN, MSNBC and PBS will air the full two hours. ABC, CBS, Fox News Channel and NBC will air the final hour. Monday will test the reach of presumptive nominee Joe Biden’s message. Former first lady Michelle Obama will speak.
(AP) As states around the country require visitors from areas with high rates of coronavirus infections to quarantine upon arrival, children taking end-of-summer vacations to hot spots are facing the possibility of being forced to skip the start of in-person learning at their schools. More than a dozen states have such travel advisories, including many in the Northeast along with Alaska, Kentucky and Ohio. As schools in the Northeast prepare to open early next month, officials are urging parents to be mindful of that guidance while planning any Labor Day getaways.
