Jamestown (JPD) On Tuesday August 18, 2020, just after midnight the Jamestown Police Department and Jamestown Area Ambulance were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of 5 Ave SW, on a report of a male who had fallen, received head injuries, and was in need of medical attention.
Assistant Police Chief, Major Justin Blinsky reports, that upon arrival, Officers discovered a male lying near a rear entrance to a residence. The male victim and the male suspect are acquaintances and the assault occurred a significant time before law enforcement was contacted.
39-year-old Cory Allen Almklov of Jamestown was arrested on suspicion of Aggravated Assault. He was transported to Jamestown Regional Medical Center for medical evaluation and was later transported to Stutsman County Corrections, where he awaits formal charges.

BISMARCK, N.D. Legislative Council Director John Bjornson says the staff member who had tested positive for the coronavirus told him Sunday night. Bjornson said he notified legislative leaders early Monday. He says he encouraged all 32 of his staff to get tested for the coronavirus. The agency includes accountants and attorneys. Bjornson says the staff member is not believed to have had close contact with any lawmaker over the past several days.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials say all North Dakota counties are aiming to have in-person voting as an option during the state’s November election. The move is reversal from the June primary when all polling places were closed statewide by local officials out of concern amid the coronavirus outbreak. North Dakota County Auditors Association Executive Director Donnell Preskey Hushka says local election officials have more time to plan and for the upcoming election and more personal protective equipment is available. Secretary of State Al Jaeger says his staff has been holding weekly meetings with county officials to discuss the upcoming election, including precautions.

The second-year player leads the majors with 11 home runs and 28 RBIs after delivering a three-run shot and a grand slam in the Padres’ 14-4 dismantling of the Rangers. Austin Hedges also homered and Jurickson Profar (JUR’-ihk-suhn PROH’-fahr) had two RBIs for San Diego.
Elsewhere in the majors:
— Brad Miller hit a tiebreaking two-run double in the seventh inning of the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over the Cubs in Game 1 of a doubleheader. St. Louis improved to 3-1 since it returned Saturday after a coronavirus outbreak derailed their season, leaving them idle for weeks and resulting in 18 confirmed cases in the organization.
— The Cubbies ended the season-worst, four-game skid in the nightcap as David Bote (BOH’-tee) belted a three-run homer in a four-run sixth that pushed them to a 5-4 victory. St. Louis wasted a big performance by Miller, who homered twice and drove in three runs in Game 2.

TENNIS – US OPEN
Halep opts out of U.S. Open
NEW YORK (AP) — Simona Halep (see-MOH’-nah HA’-lehp) will skip the U.S. Open, saying she wants to put her health first amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Halep is a former top-ranked player who is currently No. 2. She won the title in Prague on Sunday.
Six of the top eight women in the WTA rankings won’t play in New York, including No. 1 Ash Barty and defending champion Bianca Andreescu.
(AP) The Canadian Football League has canceled its 2020 season because of the pandemic. The decision marks the first year since 1919 the Grey Cup won’t be awarded. The nine-team league announced the move Monday, dashing hopes of a shortened season in the hub city of Winnipeg, Manitoba. Commissioner Randy Ambrosie says the cancellation was in the “best long-term interests” of the league and the CFL is “absolutely committed” to 2021. The CFL, unlike other major leagues in North America, does not have the luxury of a billion-dollar television contract. While its deal with TSN has become more lucrative over the years, the CFL remains a gate-driven league, a major problem when fans aren’t allowed in the stands.
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — After being tested for coronavirus outside the building, donning masks and carefully practicing social distancing in the locker room, the Baltimore Ravens enjoyed a bit of normalcy Monday with their first full-team workout in pads. With the exception of the masks on members of the coaching staff and the absence of fans in the stands, the 90-minute session had the look of a routine training camp practice. Linebacker Matthew Judon said of the session: “For a brief moment, we didn’t have to worry about the virus.” Baltimore is scheduled to open the season on Sept. 13 against Cleveland.
Due to the situation surrounding COVID-19, the United States Tennis Association has canceled all national junior events through Oct. 12.
The USTA also has canceled all adult Category 1 events, comprising the Adult, Open, Family, and Age divisions, through the end of the year.
The decision to cancel was made to ensure the health and safety of all those involved since interstate travel required for the tournaments carries an increased risk of contracting the disease.
The USTA said different regulations, restrictions and quarantine periods at the sites of the events and in the home states of the players were considered.
Auburn football coach Gus Malzahn says his players have had 33 positive tests for COVID-19 this summer.
Malzahn says one staff member also tested positive earlier this summer. The Tigers and other Southeastern Conference teams opened preseason camp Monday ahead of a season scheduled to start on Sept. 26.
Malzahn says Auburn had no positive tests last week, but four players are still going through the testing protocols. He expects results back by the end of the week.
He says the school has administered 863 tests among players, an average of more than seven times each. Staffers have had five tests each.
Linebacker Chandler Wooten and backup defensive back Traivon Leonard have opted out playing this season.
Furman of the Division I Southern Conference is postponing all fall nonconference sports due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Athletic director Jason Donnelly said Monday the decision came after last week’s announcement that the league was pushing all its fall conference athletic competition and championships to the spring. Furman plays football in the Championship Subdivision.
Donnelly says the school in Greenville, South Carolina, made the decision to protect the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches and staff, and fans.
There will be no fans at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium for NFL and MLS games played in September. The Atlanta Falcons and Atlanta United say the coronavirus pandemic forced the decision.
The teams say they will continue to collaborate with local and national health officials before deciding on the possibility for fans in games after September.
The Falcons will play at least two home games without fans — against Seattle on Sept. 13 and against Chicago on Sept. 27.
“The health and safety of our fans is our top priority,” said Steve Cannon, CEO of the Falcons and Atlanta United owner Arthur Blank’s sports and entertainment group. Cannon said the decision was made “after thoughtful consideration and collaboration.”
Atlanta United previously announced there would be no fans for three games: Aug. 22 against Nashville SC, Aug. 29 against Orlando City SC and Sept. 2 against Inter Miami CF.
Soccer’s U.S. Open Cup has been canceled this year because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The 2020 tournament was suspended in early March shortly before it was supposed to kick off. The final was to be held on either Sept. 22 or 23.
Officially called the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, it is the longest-running soccer tournament in the United States and gives amateur teams a chance to take on the pros, setting up the chance for an intriguing Cinderella team to advance far into the tournament. The winner earns a spot in the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Association Football’s Champions League.
The U.S. Soccer Federation announced Monday that the Open Cup couldn’t be staged this year because the pandemic affected teams’ ability to travel, limited or eliminated fans at games, and necessitated strict testing protocols.
The teams that were invited to participate this year will be invited next year instead.
There is no decision yet on how to allocate the CONCACAF Champions League slot that typically goes to the tournament champion.
Kansas State will allow 25% capacity at its football stadium for games this season after getting approval Monday from the county commission. That means a maximum crowd of just under 15,000 fans.
The Big 12 Conference is allowing schools to set their own attendance policies based on local jurisdictions.
The Riley County Commission reviewed the rest of Kansas State’s return-to-play protocols, too. Fans will be required to wear face coverings where 6 feet of social distancing cannot be maintained. Tailgating will not be permitted in parking lots controlled by the school. There will be no reentry. There also will be hand sanitizing stations and other protective measures.
One plus for fans: With the elimination of tailgating and reentry, the school will allow beer and wine to be purchased in general seating sections for the first time. Alcohol sales had been limited to luxury suites.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration is scrambling to respond to a public backlash over mail delays and other problems. House lawmakers are preparing an emergency vote to halt mail changes that Democrats warned could imperil the November election. The Postal Service said it has stopped removing mailboxes and mail-sorting machines amid an outcry from lawmakers, and President Donald Trump denied he was slowing service. Democrats and some Republicans say actions by a Trump ally and a major Republican donor, new Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, have endangered millions of Americans who rely on the Postal Service for prescription drugs and other needs.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — The coronavirus pandemic has inspired many Floridians to vote by mail instead of in person. More than 2.1 million people cast mail-in ballots for Tuesday’s primary, and more still are coming in by mail this election day. That compares to fewer than 1.3 million in the primary in 2016, when a U.S. Senate contest motivated voters. This time, there are no statewide races to drive the turnout. As of June 30, Florida had nearly 4.9 million active Republican voters and more than 5.1 million active Democratic voters. Nearly 3.8 million voters are not registered with a party or are registered with a minor party.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Michelle Obama didn’t mince words about President Donald Trump in her speech at the Democratic National Convention, saying, “If you think things cannot possibly get worse, trust me they can; and they will.” The former first lady issued a blunt and emotional appeal that capped the first night of the convention Monday. Mrs. Obama declared President Donald Trump to be “in over his head” and the “wrong president for our country.” She says, “Whenever we look to this White House for some leadership, or consolation, or any semblance of steadiness, what we get instead is chaos, division, and a total and utter lack of empathy.”
MANKATO, Minn. (AP) — President Donald Trump is zeroing in on Midwest battleground states with a law and order message to counter former Vice President Joe Biden’s show at the Democratic convention. On Monday, Trump visited Minnesota and then Wisconsin, the official host state for the entirely virtual Democratic National Convention. The GOP has a week of travel and political events aimed at blunting the customary polling bounce that candidates get during their convention. In Mankato, Minnesota, Trump called Biden a “puppet of left-wing extremists.” In Oshkosh, Wisconsin, the president declared that the coronavirus outbreak makes another victory in Wisconsin more difficult but claims “we handled it.”
BEIJING (AP) — China has accused Washington of damaging global trade with sanctions that threaten to cripple tech giant Huawei and said it will protect Chinese companies. It gave no indication of possible retaliation. Rules confirmed by the Commerce Department block suppliers from using U.S. technology to produce processor chips and other components for Huawei. The company, China’s first global tech competitor, is the biggest supplier of switching equipment for phone companies and a leading smartphone brand. The foreign ministry on Tuesday demanded that the Trump administration “stop suppressing Chinese companies.” Huawei Technologies Ltd. is at the center of a worsening row between Washington and Beijing over technology and security.
Shares are mixed in Europe and Asia, while U.S. futures have edged lower. South Korea’s Kospi lost 2.5% on Tuesday as worries over a resurgence in coronavirus cases grew. Markets rose in Shanghai and Hong Kong but fell in Paris, London and Tokyo. Overnight, the benchmark S&P 500 index closed at 3,381.99, after trading briefly just above its Feb. 19 record close. Markets have made up much of what was lost as the pandemic shut down businesses worldwide, bringing on the worst recession in decades. Investors are watching for new stimulus to help sustain the U.S. economic recovery.
