Alice LaVerne (Martin) Johnson, 84 (just shy of her 85th birthday) of Galt, CA, formerly of Spiritwood, ND peacefully joined her heavenly family August 15, 2020.
Alice was born on August 27, 1935 in Pettibone, ND to Ludwig and Katherine (Guthmiller) Martin. She grew up in the Pettibone, Wimbledon, and Jamestown areas, graduating from Jamestown High School. Alice was crowned Miss Lake Ashtabula in 1953. After high school she worked at the DePuy-Sorkness Clinic as a bookkeeper.
Alice married Norman Johnson on September 21, 1957. Together they farmed the family farm north of Spiritwood. They had 2 daughters, Robbin and Terri. Alice enjoyed music, fishing, gardening and sewing, from bridesmaid dresses to Norman’s spiffy sport jackets. After Robbin and Terri grew up, she got a part time job at Yesteryear in Jamestown where she reengaged her art skills. She took up oil painting and has sold many pieces of art all across North Dakota and around the Sacramento area of California. Over the years she was a member of Concordia Lutheran and Atonement Lutheran Churches.
Alice is survived by her husband, Norman of 62 years; daughters, Robbin (Tom) Bitz and Terri Carter; 5 grandchildren, Kristyn and Matthew (Allison), and Chad, Joshua (Audra), and Michelle; 3 great-grandchildren, Sabri, Aidon, and Joshua; sisters, Jeannie Martin and Donna (Darrell) Gates; step-siblings, Herman (Jonnie) Grosshans, Elfriede Wert, and Trudy Fischer.
Alice was preceded in death by her parents, Ludwig and Katherine Martin (later Grosshans) and brother Melvin. Also her stepfather, Otto Grosshans and stepbrothers Irwin and Egon Grosshans.
Her funeral will take place in Jamestown, ND with burial at Spiritwood Cemetery.
