Jamestown  (JSDC)  The Spiritwood Energy Park Association (SEPA) announced Tuesday that it has entered into a Letter of Intent with Glass Investments Projects Inc. to develop, construct and operate a large-scale commercial greenhouse that could employ approximently100 full-time positions. Construction is planned to start next spring.

The News Release went on to say, Glass Investments Projects Inc. – Delta, BC, is an experienced owner and operator of large-scale greenhouse production facilities.  Existing facilities incorporate innovative industry-leading technology.

The proposed Spiritwood Energy Park location provides existing infrastructure and facilities, including the availability of CO2, steam, water supply and transportation logistics. These attributes make the property an optimal location for the development and operation of a large-scale commercial greenhouse.  The 60 acres are located directly south of the Dakota Spirit Ag Energy Project, to be moved into SEPA and matching funds for the project from the City of Jamestown and Stutsman County.

“We have been working with the development team in North Dakota for a few years now and are excited to see this project move to the next level. Growing the best tomatoes doesn’t come easy. Our facilities are the most technically-advanced and environmentally-friendly greenhouse operations in the world. Building a greenhouse facility in the Spiritwood Energy Park will allow us to utilize of all the synergies available in the energy park. In our quest for perfection, we have become world-renowned as a pioneer of technologies that improve sustainability, food safety, yields, and consistency and are eager to bring these capabilities to North Dakota.” Said Casey Houweling, Glass Investment Projects Inc.

“Since taking office in 2016, Lt. Gov. Sanford and I have championed the opportunity to harness our state’s vast and valuable CO2 resources as an input for value-added industries including large-scale greenhouses. Seeing this project take this important step toward fruition is great news for the ag community, the economy and North Dakota as a whole,” Gov. Doug Burgum said. “We’re thrilled for the Jamestown area and excited about the example this sets for current and future collaboration between our state’s two largest industries, agriculture and energy. And we’re grateful to our team members at the Department of Commerce who approved over $200,000 in grants for this project in 2017 and 2019 and continue to work with the developers, local economic development officials and other agencies to bring jobs to our state and region and diversify our economy.”
“This is an exciting day for the Jamestown region and North Dakota agriculture with the announcement of the first commercial large-scale greenhouse project utilizing CO2 from Midwest AgEnergy and steam from the Great River Energy facility. It is a unique opportunity to expand North Dakota agriculture, with energy and agriculture working together.” Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring said. “The project is a great example of collaboration between local, private and state entities with development funding provided by the Agricultural Products Utilization Commission. The facility will be the first of its kind in the state, an ag operation with a small footprint that will provide vegetables to a national market.” Said Doug Goehring, North Dakota Department of Agriculture Commissioner.

“It is great to see this project move closer to completion. Glass Investments Projects Inc. will provide a great economic boost to the state and region.  From the prospect of new job creation, to emphasizing the synergies that exist between energy and agriculture; Houweling’s will be a great addition to the state of North Dakota.  This endeavor is a great example of the collaboration that exists between private businesses, state agencies and local economic development offices.  The ND Department of Commerce is proud to continue to be involved of the process” said James Leiman, Director of Economic Development and Finance, North Dakota Department of Commerce.

Mayor Heinrich commented “I am very enthusiastic that this project will further validate the previous investments made in the Spiritwood energy park”.  “This is an opportunity that will provide year-round permanent jobs for families to live, work and play in Jamestown/Stutsman County.  It will also offer more opportunities to those owners of apartments looking for tenants.”

“We are very excited to see this project locate at the Spiritwood Energy Park” said Stutsman County Commission Chairman, Mark Klose.  “I assume we will provide a property tax exemption comparable to what we have provided to those value-added projects in the past.  This will provide a significant contribution to the community”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Supreme Court has ordered a measure meant to significantly change the state’s election process from appearing on the November ballot. North Dakota Voters First’s proposed constitutional amendment aimed to transfer the responsibility of drawing political districts from the Legislature to the voter-approved state Ethics Commission, among other things. Opponents sued earlier this month, saying sponsors of the measure failed to provide a full text of the initiative while they were gathering signatures. The state’s high court agreed, saying “the petition does not comply with the constitutional requirement that it contain the full text of the measure.”

Minister Christopher Tufton says Bolt is aware of the results and his recent contacts are being traced. Bolt said he’s trying to be responsible and will stay indoors and self-quarantine. The team said it would work with state and county officials to determine whether it will be safe to allow fans to attend games later this season.

FRANKFURT. Germany (AP) — Germany coach Joachim Löw has made three new call-ups for upcoming Nations League games against Spain and Switzerland. They are his team’s first matches in almost 10 months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Left back Robin Gosens (26) of Italian side Atalanta, midfielder Florian Neuhaus (23) of Borussia Mönchengladbach, and goalkeeper Oliver Baumann (30) of Hoffenheim were called up for the first time Tuesday. Löw has opted to rest most of Bayern Munich and Leipzig’s players after their involvement in the Champions League closing stages. Germany is to play Spain in Stuttgart on Sept. 3, three days before it plays Switzerland in Basel. Löw’s team is to begin training in Stuttgart on Monday.

HOUSTON (AP) — The Houston Astros’ game against the Los Angeles Angels that was scheduled for Wednesday has been postponed until next month because of Hurricane Laura. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 5 in Anaheim. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee will be selling tickets for approximately 25% of the seats at Neyland Stadium this season. The stadium has a capacity of 102,455, counting everybody in the building, which could mean around 25,000 fans. The Volunteers’ first home football game is Oct. 3 against Missouri. Athletic director Phillip Fulmer says he empathizes with the thousands of fans who won’t get to experience a game day in Neyland Stadium this season. But Fulmer says the circumstances are beyond the university’s control and it’s important for Tennessee to do its part to keep people healthy. School officials will start contacting donors and season ticket holders on Thursday with a 48-hour window to decide.

In world and national news…

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — More than half a million people have been ordered to evacuate the Texas and Louisiana coasts ahead of Hurricane Laura. Forecasters expect Laura to grow to a major Category 3 hurricane over the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico before hitting the U.S. coastline late Wednesday or early Thursday. The National Hurricane Center is warning of potentially devastating damage. Scientists predict up to 13 feet of storm surge, which could inundate the coastline from High Island in Texas to Morgan City, Louisiana. Laura already killed two dozen people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Jerry Falwell Jr. says he has resigned as head of evangelical Liberty University. Falwell confirmed his departure in an interview with The Associated Press on Tuesday, a day after the school said he had submitted, then rescinded his resignation. Falwell stepped down amid conflicting claims about a sexual relationship his wife had with a younger business partner. He had already been on a leave of absence after a photo he posted on social media caused an uproar. Falwell is the son of university founder the late Rev. Jerry Falwell.

NEW YORK (AP) — New York’s attorney general added Tuesday to the growing pile of lawsuits seeking to halt disruptions to the U.S. Postal Service, citing substantial delays in mail delivery ahead of November’s presidential election — including several communities in her state that have gone some days without mail. Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, said the changes amounted to voter suppression, with President Donald Trump admitting earlier this month that he wanted to hamper the postal service’s processing of mail-in ballots, which he fears could tilt the election to Democratic rival Joe Biden.

NEW YORK (AP) — The number of Americans newly diagnosed with the coronavirus is falling — a development experts credit at least partly to increased wearing of masks — even as the outbreak continues to claim nearly 1,000 lives in the U.S. each day. About 43,000 new cases are now being reported daily across the country, down 21% since early August. That’s according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.

(AP) The FBI is investigating the killing of an inmate who was beaten to death at a federal lockup in Indiana. An autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press shows the May death of 59-year-old Jose Nieves-Galarza was a homicide caused by “blunt-force injuries” that caused him to bleed to death in his cell. The U.S. Bureau of Prisons did not respond to questions about whether any inmates or staff have been disciplined in the attack, which nearly ruptured the man’s aorta. The killing is at least the third in recent months inside a federal prison. The killings are among the latest security issues for the federal Bureau of Prisons, which has been plagued by chronic violence, serious misconduct and persistent staffing shortages.

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The president of the U.N. Security Council has rejected the Trump administration’s demand to restore all U.N. sanctions on Iran. The move drew an angry rebuke from U.S. Ambassador Kelly Craft, who accused council opponents of supporting “terrorists.” Indonesia’s ambassador to the U.N., Dian Triansyah Djani, whose country currently holds the rotating council presidency, made the announcement at a virtual council meeting. U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo insisted last Thursday that the U,S. has the legal right to “snap back” U.N. sanctions, even though President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear deal between six major powers and Iran.
