BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s longest-serving Supreme Court justice is back in the hospital after he was released to another facility for rehabilitation following treatment for the coronavirus. The Bismarck Tribune reports that Justice Gerald VandeWalle. who was released from Sanford Health Bismarck’s COVID-19 unit a week ago, was readmitted Monday following a chest X-ray,. VandeWalle says the test showed a “little clot” in his lung and he has been short of breath. The 87-year-old VandeWalle has been on the court for 42 years. He served as chief justice from 1993 through 2019.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The number of American white pelicans at a North Dakota wildlife refuge is down dramatically due to high water that has gobbled up much of their nesting grounds, An aerial survey completed Friday showed about 14,200 birds nesting at the Chase Lake National Wildlife Refuge, or about half the number recorded two years ago. Acting refuge manager Jeff Dion says heavy snow melt followed by a wet spring swamped much of the pelicans’ main nesting grounds. The refuge normally draws thousands of tourists annually to see the birds but flooded roads have prevented access to viewing locations.
MINOT, N.D. (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested the husband of a Minot woman who died after what was initially reported as an accidental shooting. Officers were called to a Minot residence May 21 where 37-year-old Connie Rod had been shot. Her 42-year-old husband, Erik Rod, reported the shooting was an accident. She died at Trinity Hospital on May 25. Police say their investigators discovered evidence that led them to believe the shooting wasn’t accidental. The Ward County State’s Attorney’s Office reviewed the case and issued a felony murder charge. Erik Rod was arrested Thursday and is being held in the Ward County Jail. It was not immediately clear if he has an attorney to speak on his behalf.
In world and national news…
WASHINGTON (AP) — The top U.S. military officer is telling Congress that the U.S. armed forces will have no role in carrying out the election process or resolving a disputed vote. The comments from Gen. Mark Milley, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, underscore the extraordinary political environment in America, where the president has declared without evidence that the expected surge in mail-in ballots will make the vote “inaccurate and fraudulent,” and has suggested he might not accept the election results if he loses.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Carter Center, an organization founded by former President Jimmy Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, has launched an initiative meant to strengthen and build confidence in the U.S. election system. The center said Friday that it has observed over 110 elections in 39 countries since 1989, but is now taking on the problems at home. The center notes that while the U.S. has fallen short of some international election standards before, it’s only in the last decade that the center would describe the country’s democracy as “backsliding.” President Donald Trump has repeatedly said the 2020 election will be the most rigged election in U.S. history.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A House panel is moving to hold Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in contempt of Congress. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Eliot Engel of New York said Friday that the panel will prepare a contempt resolution for what he called Pompeo’s “unprecedented record of obstruction and defiance.” Pompeo has repeatedly rejected the committee’s subpoenas for records related to Ukraine that the department has already turned over to the Senate. Pompeo and his aides say all of the House subpoenas are politically motivated, without merit, and unnecessary. Contempt itself is largely symbolic and used to embarrass officials who refuse congressional requests
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California Gov. Gavin Newsom is announcing a new process for reopening businesses that is slower and more gradual than what the state tried earlier this summer. The new rules create a four-tier, color-coded system that counties will move through based on their number of cases and percentage of positive tests. It will rely on two metrics to determine which tier a county is in: case rates and the percentage of positive tests. The new process will put more power with the state instead of the counties. The new rules come nearly two months after Newsom shut down bars, restaurants for indoor dining and other businesses following a surge in cases.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Health officials in North Carolina’s Mecklenburg County say four people who were at the Republican National Convention in Charlotte have tested positive for the coronavirus. WBTV reported Thursday that those who tested positive were immediately isolated. The county said in a news release that nearly 800 people were tested who attended the event or who helped support it. Two attendees and two people supporting the convention tested positive. The Charlotte Observer reports that the disclosures come after county health officials raised concerned about a lack of social distancing and mask wearing at a Monday business meeting of the RNC in Charlotte. Strict coronavirus protocols were supposed to be followed.
