Washington U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will extend several free meals for kids, flexibilities through as late as December 31, 2020.
The flexibilities allow summer meal program operators to continue serving free meals to all children into the fall months. This unprecedented move will help ensure – no matter what the situation is on-the-ground – children have access to nutritious food as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic. USDA has been and continues to be committed to using the Congressionally appropriated funding that has been made available.
Secretary Perdue says, “As our nation reopens and people return to work, it remains critical our children continue to receive safe, healthy, and nutritious food. During the COVID-19 pandemic, USDA has provided an unprecedented amount of flexibilities to help schools feed kids through the school meal programs, and today, we are also extending summer meal program flexibilities for as long as we can, legally and financially. We appreciate the incredible efforts by our school foodservice professionals year in and year out, but this year we have an unprecedented situation. This extension of summer program authority will employ summer program sponsors to ensure meals are reaching all children – whether they are learning in the classroom or virtually – so they are fed and ready to learn, even in new and ever-changing learning environments.”
School Nutrition Association (SNA) President Reggie Ross, SNS “School Nutrition Association greatly appreciates USDA addressing the critical challenges shared by our members serving students on the frontlines these first weeks of school. These waivers will allow school nutrition professionals to focus on nourishing hungry children for success, rather than scrambling to process paperwork and verify eligibility in the midst of a pandemic. We look forward to continuing our dialogue with USDA to ensure school meal programs are equipped to meet the future needs of America’s students.”
Fargo(Aug. 31, 2020) — While gas prices across North Dakota rose 1.5 cents in August, it’s been 16 years since motorists paid a lower average price for the month.
Monday’s statewide average stands at $2.11 while the national average is $2.23. On this day one year ago, North Dakota motorists where paying $2.57, while nationally the average stood at $2.58.
The average price paid for a gallon of regular gas in North Dakota during August was $2.10. Last year the monthly average was $2.63. The last time the August average was below $2.10 was in 2004 when the average was $1.93.
Gasoline demand continues to increase but still remains below last year’s level. At the same time, gasoline supplies remain well above average for this time of year. As the summer travel season comes to a close, the trend for prices is lower.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — The Republican-controlled Wisconsin Legislature took no action in a special session called by the state’s Democratic governor to pass a package of bills on policing policies. The brief session came just over a week after a Kenosha police officer shot Jacob Blake seven times in the back. Republicans started the session and recessed in both the Senate and Assembly in less than 30 seconds. That satisfied requirements of the law that they meet, even though almost no lawmakers were present. It’s a tactic Republicans used in November when Gov. Tony Evers tried to force them to take action on gun control bills.
KENOSHA, Wis. (AP) — Some residents in Kenosha fear a planned visit by President Donald Trump days after unrest over a police shooting may stir more emotions. Trump is scheduled to tour the damage Tuesday and meet with law enforcement as demonstrators call for an officer to face attempted murder charges in the shooting of Jacob Blake. His visit comes a week after authorities say a 17-year-old from northern Illinois shot and killed two protesters. The tension began Aug. 23 after a video showed a Kenosha police officer shooting Blake in the back. Blake is a 29-year-old Black man. His family says he’s paralyzed

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Joe Biden is forcefully condemning the violence at recent protests while also blaming President Donald Trump for fomenting the divide that’s sparking it. He’s dismissing his presidential opponent as incapable of tackling the violence himself. Biden said Monday in Pittsburgh that Trump can’t stop the violence “because for years he’s fomented it.” Trump says Biden won’t condemn the violence, but Biden said Monday, “It’s lawlessness, plain and simple. And those who do it should be prosecuted,.”
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court won’t order the dismissal of the Michael Flynn prosecution. The court ruled Monday that a judge is entitled to scrutinize the Justice Department’s request to dismiss its case against the former Trump administration national security adviser. The decision keeps the case at least temporarily alive. In May, the Justice Department moved to dismiss the prosecution even though Flynn himself had pleaded guilty and admitted lying to the FBI during the Russia investigation. Flynn was the only person charged in special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation who had been a White House official. Mueller’s probe investigated ties between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia.
BRUSSELS (AP) — In a world turned upside down by the coronavirus pandemic, rarely have so many kids relished the end of their summer vacations and rarely have so many teachers faced such anxiety. School bells will ring in a new year across much of Europe starting Tuesday but there are fears that many school are not ready to handle in-class operations safely enough. After months of lockdowns and uneven online instruction since COVID-19 hit Europe, tens of millions of kids will be unleashed upon one another in classrooms, gyms and playgrounds again. While it’s a joyous time for youngsters, parents and teachers are uneasy about how that will fuel the continent’s infection rates, which are already much higher now than in May.
NEW YORK (AP) — A May 2021 trial date has been set for President Donald Trump’s former chief strategist on charges that he cheated donors to a group seeking to fund a southern border wall. Steve Bannon appeared by audio but could not be seen Monday on a video screen before U.S. District Judge Analisa Torres. She set a May 24 trial date. He was charged two weeks ago along with three others with unlawfully raising over $25 million. Prosecutors say thousands of investors were duped into thinking all of their donations would go toward the project. But the government alleges that Bannon diverted over a million dollars. He has pleaded not guilty.
Bismarck (CSi) – Gov. Doug Burgum will help welcome U.S. Secretary of Energy Dan Brouillette to North Dakota on Tuesday, Sept. 1, for a review of U.S. nuclear forces at Minot Air Force Base and roundtable discussions with coal producers and the oil and gas industry.
Burgum will join U.S. Sens. John Hoeven and Kevin Cramer as they host Brouillette at the Minot Air Force Base at 11 a.m. CT, and during the roundtable discussions on coal at 1:30 p.m. and oil and natural gas at 3 p.m. CT, both at the Grand Hotel, 1505 N. Broadway, Minot.
Brouillette was nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as energy secretary in November 2019 and was confirmed by the U.S. Senate last December. He previously served as deputy energy secretary, a position he held when he was a guest speaker at the Great Plains and EmPower ND Energy Conference in Bismarck in October 2018.
DETROIT (AP) — The city of Detroit has turned an island park into an extraordinary memorial garden for victims of COVID-19. Cars packed with families Monday passed hundreds of photos of Detroit residents who died from the virus. Hearses are leading solemn all-day processions around Belle Isle Park in the Detroit River after bells rang across the region at 8:45 a.m. More than 900 photos submitted by families are displayed on large posters around Belle Isle, revealing the crushing breadth of the virus. In Detroit, more than 1,500 people have died. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer says the victims had “dreams and plans and a story.”
