Bismarck  (KFYR)  The weekly COVID-19 Response media briefing has been moved to Thursday at 3:30 p.m. CST.

The Governor’s Office said there was a “scheduling change” as the reason for the move in timing.

Gov. Doug Burgum, R-N.D., was expected to make an announcement on adjusting the state’s COVID-19 Threat Level. The state had been in the “Green-Low Risk” level for months.

Following recent increases in cases and daily positive rates, Burgum said he was considering adjusting the threat level to “Yellow-Moderate” either statewide or county-by-county; focusing on Burleigh, Morton, Stark, Grand Forks, and others.

North Dakota health officials are reporting 265 new positive coronavirus cases and three new deaths on Wednesday. The number of new positive cases reported Wednesday included 62 in Burleigh County and 23 in Morton County. The counties that include the Bismarck metropolitan area have taken over as the state’s hot spot for the virus in recent weeks. North Dakota’s death toll from the coronavirus was 148 as of Wednesday. The newest victims were a man in his 70s from Morton County, a woman in her 90s from Williams County, and a woman in her 80s from Burleigh County.

North Dakota University System Chancellor Mark Hagerott on Wednesday asked students at the state’s 11 colleges and universities to stay on campus and minimize traveling over the Labor Day weekend in an effort to help control the spread of the disease. He also encouraged students to get tested at public testing sites. The university system has about 45,000 students.

Valley City  (VCPS) Under guidance from the United States Department of Agriculture, beginning immediately, Valley City Public Schools will be offering free meals to all students.

Every student is eligible for free breakfast and lunch daily, independent of income level. Free meals are set to continue through December 31st, 2020 or until USDA funding is no longer available. All families will automatically receive free meals as long as the program is active and need not take any action to receive this benefit.

As the special funding for this program does have the potential to end unexpectedly, families are strongly encouraged to continue to complete free and reduced meal applications for this school year. Completing an application not only ensures your students receive free school meals without interruption, they also directly impact important school funding sources.

Menus will continue to include your same favorite entree and salad bar choices. Ala Cart and Super Sizing will also continue to be available for purchase at the Jr/Sr High School.

Jamestown  (JPS) Jamestown Public Schools, Superintendent, Dr. Robert Lech says,  all Jamestown Public Schools students will receive free meals for the start of the 2020/2021 school year via a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) waiver as the country continues to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

These meals will be made available as late as December 31, 2020 or until the available federal funding is exhausted.

Lech says, “This is a great development for our kids and families. We are very pleased with this decision.”

The available meals include breakfast and lunch for all students, either virtual or in-person, and includes “to-go” pickups. Extra milks, ala carte items, and super-size entrees will still be charged to the individual account.

Current funds in a student account can be held for when charges to meals resumes. Families are still requested to complete Free and Reduced Meal Program applications as the free meals are temporary and dependent upon available federal funds. In addition, there are also other household and school district benefits to qualifying for the Free and Reduced Meal Program.

Any complete meal charges going back to the first day of school will be refunded to the student’s account through this USDA program extension waiver.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The federal budget deficit is projected to hit a record $3.3 trillion as huge government expeditures to fight the coronavirus and to prop up the economy have added more than $2 trillion to the federal ledger, The word comes from the Congressional Budget Office. The project deficit is more than triple the 2019 shortfall and more than double the levels experienced after the market meltdown and Great Recession of 2008-2009. Government spending, fueled by four coronavirus response measures, would register at $6.6 trillion _ at least $2 trillion more than 2019.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The latest Federal Reserve survey of U. S economic activity has found generally modest gains in August but also pessimism about the future given the threats posed by the coronavirus. The Fed report says a theme echoed across the country is the continued uncertainty stemming from the pandemic and its negative effect on consumer and business activity. The report found that economic activity increased modestly last month from late July but remained well below levels seen before the pandemic hit in March. The report, known as the Beige Book, is compiled from responses from business contacted by Fed’s 12 regional banks.

(AP)  Mental health therapists’ caseloads are bulging. Waiting lists for appointments are growing. And research suggests that anxiety and depression are rising among Americans amid the coronavirus pandemic. A study published Wednesday is the latest to suggest an uptick. Half of U.S. adults surveyed reported at least some signs of depression. The rate was higher than in a different survey two years ago. Even if the trends reflect mostly angst rather than full-blown psychiatric illness, experts say the problem is real. For some people, it stems from lost jobs and loved ones, financial stress, and anxiety over racial and political upheaval.

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Power crews are working to restore electricity across storm-devastated Louisiana, road crews are clearing debris and thousands of tarps are being distributed to patch over wrecked roofs. But Gov. John Bel Edwards cautioned his state’s residents Wednesday to be realistic about “the long road ahead of us” to recover from Hurricane Laura. State officials say more than 230,000 utility customers in Louisiana remain without power, and 175,000 people face water outages. Edwards urged people, particularly in hardest-hit southwestern Louisiana, to follow the guidance of their local authorities on when it’s safe to return home and stay there.

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — President Donald Trump will use the power of incumbency to his advantage Wednesday, opting to make a personal appearance in a key battleground state to declare the port city of Wilmington, North Carolina a World War II “Heritage City.” Wilmington is the first city to get that designation and Trump is not missing the chance to celebrate in person. His press secretary said earlier this week that “there’s not a political purpose in this visit.” The president’s visit to North Carolina comes as county boards start sending absentee ballots to voters on Friday. Vice President Mike Pence will follow the president by visiting Raleigh on Thursday.
