College Football

Aberdeen, SD  (VCSU)  – After a two-week delay, numerous safety precautions, COVID testing and a whole lot of uncertainty, the Valley City State football team was back to some normalcy Saturday – playing football.

The Vikings opened the 2020 season with a 21-3 road victory at Presentation College, scoring 21 unanswered points en route to the win.

Presentation College scored a field goal on its opening possession, but the Vikings rose to the challenge. VCSU’s defense shut the Saints down the rest of the way and set up all three VCSU scoring drives with turnovers.

VCSU Junior Zachary Co recovered a fumble with 6:55 left in the first quarter, giving VCSU the ball at the Saints 34-yard line. Five plays later Viking quarterback Jalen Pfeifer connected with tight end Jorun Hamre on a 15-yard touchdown as the Vikings took a 7-3 lead.

Early in the second quarter the Viking defense recorded a turnover on downs, coming up with a big stop on fourth-and-1 near midfield. The offense followed with a 15-play drive that took nearly eight minutes off the clock. Junior running back Joshua McKnight finished off the drive with a touchdown, plunging in from 1-yard out to put the Vikings ahead 14-3.

The Vikings tacked on their final touchdown late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach. Defensive back Martin Jones intercepted the Saints near midfield with 5:42 remaining. Seven plays later Pfeifer hit freshman receiver Benjamin Dumond for a 16-yard touchdown. Freshman kicker Nico Magana added the extra point – his third of the day – for the final score of 21-3.

Pfeifer passed for two scores on the day to lead VCSU’s offense. Martin Jones and Anthony Russell each had interceptions for the defense. Complete stats for the game were unavailable as of Saturday night.

“Overall, there were a lot of good signs that came out of the meet today,” said VCSU coach Glen Ellingson. “We have a young team that is still developing, but looking at the results last year at this time we were significantly better today. Laquone Robinson (VCSU head coach) and I are excited to see what we can do over the next month to progress and get prepared for the conference championships in November.”

VCSU freshman Jasmine Barnes placed fourth in her collegiate debut, finishing the women’s 5K in a time of 21:03. College Volleyball

(VCSU)  The Viking volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at the University of Northwestern Saturday.

In the first matchup, Valley City State fell in three straight sets, 25-22, 25-15, 25-17. The Vikings took one set from the Eagles in the second game but fell in four sets, 25-6, 25-17, 20-25, 25-18.

The Vikings fall to 0-5 overall this season.

Up Next: Valley City State opens conference play Wednesday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. when they host Dickinson State University at The Bubble.

Northwestern 3, VCSU 0
Valley City State started out with their strongest set of the matchup in the first set Saturday, with neither team trailing by more than three throughout the set. The Vikings and Eagles were tied at 19-19 on a kill from Bailey Nelson when the Eagles answered back with a kill of their own. A Valley City State error gave Northwestern a two-point lead, but a Katie Juarez kill spurred a three-point run for the Vikings to hold a 22-21 advantage. From there, the Eagles scored the next four straight points to take the first set, 25-22.

Northwestern controlled the second set with a five-point run early on to hold a 14-7 lead. The Vikings would get within five on a kill from Juarez to make it 16-11. The Eagles went on to score six straight points and held the 22-11 advantage. The Vikings wouldn’t give up as Anne-Elise Gest recorded three straight kills on the Eagles’ set-point. A final kill from Northwestern gave them the second set, 25-15.

The third set was all Northwestern as they started out with a commanding 17-7 lead. The Vikings battled back, going on a 5-2 run capped by an ace from Morganne Eppard. The Vikings would get within six on a Nissa Johnson kill, but it wasn’t enough as Northwestern finished the match 25-17.

Clarissa Hilary recorded a double-double in the first matchup as she tallied 29 assists and 13 digs for the Vikings. Nissa Johnson recorded 10 kills to lead the Viking offense. Kallene Klever recorded 15 digs while Katie Juarez added 12 digs and eight kills for the Vikings.

Northwestern 3, VCSU 1
Valley City State couldn’t gain the momentum they needed in the second match of the day as Northwestern took the first set 25-6.

The Vikings came out stronger in the second set, holding an early 11-11 tie. Northwestern then took a 6-1 run until a service error gave the Vikings an opportunity. Valley City State took the next three points including a Gest kill and Juarez ace to trail by only one at 17-16. It wasn’t enough though, as the Eagles took the set 25-17.

Valley City State would not be swept, coming out in the third set with an early 10-6 lead. The Eagles would tie things up at 10-10 when the Vikings scored the next five, capped by an ace from Gest. Valley City State then took a 7-3 run including three Juarez kills to hold a 22-15 advantage. The Eagles scored the next four, but the Vikings held on as they took the third set, 25-20.

The two battled in the fourth set and held a 12-12 tie early on. The Eagles took six of the next seven points to lead 17-13. A kill from Johnson started a Viking comeback as they got as close as 17-18 later in the game. Northwestern gained enough to finish it off, taking the fourth set 25-18.

Clarissa Hilary recorded another double-double with 20 assists and 13 digs for the Vikings. Katie Juarez tallied 11 kills and three service aces while Maara Nelson added six kills and three blocks. Kallene Klever added 10 digs and Bailey Nelson tallied five blocks for the Viking defense.

It was not totally unexpected. The Rockets and D’Antoni couldn’t agree on an extension last year, meaning he was coaching this season with no guarantee of his future in Houston.

NHL

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) — The Tampa Bay Lightning used a quick-strike attack to take a three-games-to-one lead in the NHL’s Eastern Conference final.

The Lightning are one win away from their first trip to the Stanley Cup final since 2015 following a 4-1 win over the Islanders.

The Lightning’s first two goals came 12 seconds apart midway through the second period. Blake Coleman tied it 15 seconds after Brock Nelson gave the Islanders the lead. Ondrej Palat (AHN’-dray pah-LAHT’) made it 2-1 at the 11:54 mark.

— The Rams opened their new stadium with a victory as Malcolm Brown rushed for a career-high 79 yards and two touchdowns in a 20-17 win over the Cowboys. Jared Goff passed for 275 yards as the Rams improved to 4-0 in openers under coach Sean McVay.

UNDATED (AP) — The New England Patriots’ new quarterback had a better day than the old one.

Cam Newton rushed for two touchdowns and the Pats held on to beat the Dolphins 21-11. Newton rushed for 15 times for 75 yards and threw for 155 yards. He guided an offensive attack that did most of its damage on the ground in their first game since the departure of Tom Brady this offseason. Sony Michel added a game-clinching TD run for New England.

Brady was intercepted twice in his Tampa Bay debut, a 34-23 loss to the Saints. The first of Brady’s interceptions led to Alvin Kamara’s (kah-MAH’-rahz) 6-yard touchdown run. The second pick thrown by the new, 43-year-old Bucs QB was returned 36 yards for a touchdown by Janoris Jenkins.

Kamara scored touchdowns running and receiving, and 41-year-old Drew Brees (breez) passed for 160 yards and two TDs with no turnovers.

Kyler Murray threw for 230 yards and a touchdown and ran for 90 yards and another score to help the Cardinals overcome a pair of fourth-quarter deficits.

— Heisman winner Joe Burrow ran 23 yards untouched for a touchdown in his NFL debut, but the Bengals were beaten by the Chargers, 16-13. A line anchored by Joey Bosa (BOH’-sah) and Melvin Ingram III held the quarterback from national champion LSU to 23 of 36 passing for 192 yards with three sacks and a costly interception.

— Lamar Jackson threw for 275 yards and three touchdowns to help the Ravens beat the Browns 38-6, ruining Kevin Stefanski’s debut as Cleveland’s head coach. Jackson completed 20 of 25 passes and racked up a team-high 45 yards on the ground.

— Josh Allen led three consecutive first-half touchdown drives and the Bills overcame their own sloppiness and injuries to two starting linebackers in a 27-17 win over the Jets. Allen finished 33 of 46 for 312 yards in becoming Buffalo’s first player to top 300 yards since Tyrod Taylor in 2016.

— Gardner Minshew threw three touchdown passes, including a 22-yarder to Keelan Cole in the fourth quarter of the Jaguars’ 27-20 victory over the Colts. Ninshew completed 19 of 20 passes for 173 yards and no turnovers.

In world and national news…

BEAVERCREEK, Ore. (AP) — Leaders in the Democratic-led West Coast states and President Donald Trump have clashed over the role of climate change as wildfires race through the region. Ahead of Trump’s visit Monday to California for a fire briefing, the governors of California, Oregon and Washington state have said the fires are a consequence of climate change. Trump has blamed poor forest management for the flames that have killed at least 35 people, destroyed neighborhoods and enveloped the West Coast in smoke. Numerous studies in recent years have linked bigger wildfires in the U.S. to global warming from the burning of coal, oil and gas.

WAVELAND, Miss. (AP) — Storm-weary Gulf Coast residents are preparing for a new weather onslaught as Tropical Storm Sally churns northward. Forecasters from the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Sally is expected to become a hurricane on Monday and reach shore by early Tuesday, bringing dangerous weather conditions including risk of flooding to a region stretching from the western Florida Panhandle to southeast Louisiana. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards urged people to prepare for the storm immediately. He also said there are still many from southwestern Louisiana who evacuated from Hurricane Laura into New Orleans — exactly the area that could be hit by Sally.

LONDON (AP) — British scientists are beginning a small study comparing how two experimental coronavirus vaccines might work when they are inhaled by people instead of being injected. Researchers at Imperial College London and Oxford University said a trial involving 30 people would directly test vaccines developed by both institutions when participants inhale the droplets in their mouths. That targets their respiratory systems. Dr. Chris Chiu, who leads the research at Imperial, said there is evidence that delivering influenza vaccines via a nasal spray can protect people against flu as well as help to reduce the transmission of the disease. He suggested that might also be the case with COVID-19.

He urged Italians to take the virus seriously and “rigorously” adhere to mask mandates, social distancing and frequent handwashing. He sent a special appeal to Italy’s students, who are returning to school for the first time Monday since early March. The three-time premier has made a career out of rebounding from legal woes, personal scandal, heart trouble and political setbacks.

DENVER (AP) — Democrats are unveiling new operations to try to make it easier for their voters to cast ballots. On Monday they launched an upgrade to their web site which allows people to register online, request mail ballots digitally or via printouts and even learn how to upload their signature to speed processing. The site also provides information on in-person voting. Both parties are trying to get their voters to cast ballots by mail, despite President Trump’s groundless attacks on the method. The GOP is asking new voters it registers to request absentee ballots and sending request forms for mail ballots to its voters in several places.
