The rampant spread of the coronavirus in North Dakota is putting its hospitals to the test, as the steady influx of people requiring in-patient stays has left only about 200 regular beds and 20 in intensive care units vacant. After escaping the surge in cases that many other states were dealing with early on during the pandemic, North Dakota has found itself with the nation’s highest number of new cases per 100,000 people over the past two weeks, according to The COVID Tracking Project. The state reached a grim new milestone on Friday, as its COVID-19 death toll eclipsed the 500 mark, rising by 13 in the past day. Nearly half of those deaths have occurred this month.

North Dakota’s daily positivity rate for COVID-19 neared 20% as health officials reported a record of more than 1,000 cases in the last day. Tuesday’s update of 1,036 new cases lifted the total number of the coronavirus cases statewide to 33,666 since the pandemic began. The surge in cases prompted city leaders in Fargo and Minot on Monday to require face coverings in most settings. Gov. Doug Burgum has resisted issuing an order to require a statewide mask mandate, even as the number of cases soar. Four new deaths were reported Tuesday, bringing the death toll from the virus to 412.

North Dakota remains among the nation’s hot spots for the coronavirus spread, with health officials reporting a new daily high of new cases. Health officials confirmed 877 new cases of the virus on Friday and 18 additional deaths. Since the pandemic began, the state of fewer than 800,000 people has seen a total of 388 deaths and more than 30,000 total cases. The surge in cases and deaths statewide spurred Gov. Doug Burgum to raise the coronavirus risk level in several North Dakota counties this week. But he issued no mandated restrictions. The new deaths include 10 women and eight men, all in their 60s or older. All had underlying health conditions.

North Dakota health officials reported a record number of new active COVID-19 cases in the last day, as well as positive virus tests in all but seven of the state’s 53 counties. The update showed 257 active cases statewide, for a total of 4,426 people who are currently infected. It’s the fourth straight day of record active cases. Hospitalizations increased by four, to 144. The number of people in medical facilities has rose steadily for a week, taxing the state’s hospital capacity. State health officials say hospitalizations due to illness from the coronavirus reached a new high in North Dakota with 105 people receiving treatment in medical centers. The record reported Monday comes a day after state officials met with leaders at two hospitals in Bismarck who told a governor’s task force they are nearing capacity because of COVID-19. Burleigh County, which includes Bismarck, leads the state with 719 active virus cases. Three new deaths were reported, including a woman in her 60s and man in his 80s from Burleigh County and a man in his 80s from Rolette County. North Dakota continues to lead the nation in the number of cases per capita over a two-week period.

North Dakota has reported 497 people who have tested positive for the coronavirus, contributing to an all-time high for active coronavirus cases statewide at 3,672. The state also reported one of the largest single-day tallies for deaths from COVID-19 with eight people dying from the disease. The waves of cases and hospitalizations have prompted concerns that hospitals are nearing their capacity, the Bismark Tribune reported. There are currently 104 people in hospitals statewide with COVID-19. Employees of hospitals in the Bismark area told the COVID-19 task force for Burleigh and Morton counties that the influx in patients has disrupted hospital operations.
