WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he and first lady Melania Trump have tested positive for the coronavirus, and a White House official says the president is experiencing “mild symptoms” of COVID-19. Trump’s positive test comes just hours after the White House announced that senior aide Hope Hicks came down with the virus after traveling with the president several times this week. Trump led a fundraiser in New Jersey Thursday after knowing he had been exposed to Hicks. Trump is 74 years old, putting him at higher risk of serious complications from a virus that has now killed more than 205,000 people nationwide. A spokesman says Vice President Mike Pence tested negative for the virus on Friday.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump’s campaign manager says all campaign events involving the president and his family will either be turned into virtual events or postponed until further notice. Bill Stepien, who heads Trump’s reelection, says Vice President Mike Pence, who has tested negative for COVID-19, plans to continue to his campaign schedule. The announcement comes after Trump tweeted earlier Friday that he and his wife tested positive for the coronavirus. It is not clear when the president was exposed.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Cleveland officials say they’re aware of 11 positive coronavirus cases related to the setup and planning for Tuesday’s presidential debate.
The city said in a statement Friday that it’s working with state and federal officials and is involved with interviewing those who tested positive.
Earlier Friday, President Donald Trump announced that he and the first lady had tested positive for COVID-19. Both traveled to Cleveland on Tuesday for the first presidential debate of the campaign. It’s unclear where they contracted the virus.
Cleveland officials say most of the cases stemming from the pre-debate planning and setup involved people from out of state. They say health officials are now looking into their travels.
An election year already defined by a cascade of national crises is descending further into uncharted territory, now that President Donald Trump says he’s tested positive for the coronavirus. No one knows exactly what comes next. But the development settles the focus of the campaign where Democratic nominee Joe Biden has put his emphasis for months — on Trump’s response to a pandemic that has killed more than 205,000 people in the U.S. Biden, who spent 90 minutes on the debate stage with Trump on Tuesday night, tweeted Friday that he and his wife have tested negative for the virus.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Hitched to Donald Trump, Republicans in Congress are facing perhaps their biggest loyalty test yet after the president tested positive for the coronavirus. The diagnosis is upending the Trump administration’s entire approach to COVID-19 weeks before the election. So far, the Republicans are standing by Trump. Their Senate majority is seriously at risk and hopes for winning back the House are long gone. But Republicans are reluctant to criticize Trump or provoke his legions of supporters — even if it might jeopardize their political careers. “Full steam ahead,” said Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell about the fall agenda.
