Snow is expected Monday night across western and central North Dakota.
Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches are expected, but this will likely
be enough to cause snow covered and slippery roads, including for the Tuesday morning commute.

Snow will linger over central North Dakota Tuesday morning, with minor additional accumulations possible, along with snow covered and slippery roads, including during the Tuesday morning commute.

Heavy snow is possible across parts of western and central North Dakota Wednesday night and Thursday. There is uncertainty with the exact path of this potential winter storm, but forecaster confidence is increasing that parts of the area could receive heavy snow accumulations of 6 inches or more.

City County Health Administrator, Theresa Will says, the new earlier testing time is due to the tests being sent to a lab in North Carolina, being over-nighted by FedEx.

She says the usual results are sent to the Bismarck lab, however that facility is handling several test samples taken at area long-term care facilities to speed up results for contacting the staff and residents.

Bismarck  (CSi) – Gov. Doug Burgum, in conjunction with the North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH), announced Friday that North Dakota has submitted its COVID-19 vaccination plan to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The plan can be found at health.nd.gov/covidvaccine.

“We’re deeply grateful to all of the agencies and partners involved in this collaborative effort to develop a comprehensive COVID-19 vaccination plan,” Governor Burgum said. “North Dakota is ready to take action as soon as a safe and effective vaccine becomes available.”

North Dakota’s planning efforts are based on CDC guidance to anticipate a phased availability of vaccines within the state. This COVID-19 vaccine plan outlines how a future COVID-19 vaccine will be prioritized, equitably allocated, distributed and administered in North Dakota.

“We have been planning for months to ensure we have a detailed plan ready to be able to distribute and administer the COVID-19 vaccine as successfully as possible when it becomes available,” said NDDoH Immunization Program Manager Molly Howell. “We’re appreciative for our partners who continue to assist us in this process. Preparations and planning will continue while awaiting an approved vaccine.”

Key areas addressed in this plan include enrollment of health care providers to administer vaccine, storage and handling, prioritization, allocation, distribution, and data reporting. The plan will be updated as additional information about the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available. It is still unknown who will be prioritized for COVID-19 vaccine and when a vaccine will be available.

North Dakota included pharmacies, long-term care facilities, corrections, universities, health care providers, local public health, tribal entities and other key stakeholders in the planning process.

“In North Dakota, we have a close connection with health care, nonprofits, community groups and others that has strengthened our response to COVID-19,” said Kylie Hall with the NDSU Center for Immunization Research and Education and member of the vaccine planning team. “Our partners are continuing to prepare for the day when a safe and effective vaccine is available so we can distribute it equitably and efficiently.”

In August, North Dakota was selected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as one of four states to be part of a pilot project to plan for the distribution of a future COVID-19 vaccine.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (NCHC) – After thorough discussion and thoughtful planning over the past few months, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) has finalized its plans for the 2020-21 season. The 26-game conference schedule and two-part format, which includes utilizing a centralized location (“Pod”) for all NCHC games to start the season, was unanimously approved by the NCHC’s Board of Directors on Thursday, Oct. 15.

With the focus on the health and safety of student-athletes, coaches, staff, and officials, the Conference has intentionally attempted to limit team travel. Because of this, NCHC teams have been divided into two divisions based on geography for 2020-21 scheduling purposes: East and West. The East Division consists of Miami, Minnesota Duluth, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan. The West Division consists of Colorado College, Denver, North Dakota and Omaha. Teams will play each of their divisional opponents six times (18 games total) and each cross-division opponent twice (8 games total), with all cross-division games taking place in the Pod to alleviate travel. The second portion of the season will then take place January through March, with all divisional foes playing each other at home and on the road.

The Conference will commence the pursuit of the Penrose Cup on Tuesday, Dec. 1 in the Pod, which will take place in Omaha, Nebraska, where the University of Nebraska Omaha’s Baxter Arena will host all eight NCHC teams. Competition in the Pod will include 10 games per team (40 games total) and run through the first three weeks of December, with games held throughout each week. In addition to the cross-division games at Baxter Arena, each team will also play two games against one divisional foe in the Pod.

Overall medical support and COVID-19 testing for all participating student-athletes, staff and officials in the Pod will be conducted through the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC), located in Omaha. Medical protocols and testing strategies for the entire season are currently being developed with top medical professionals from UNMC and the Global Center for Health Security.

The Vikings improve their record to 4-1 in the North Star Athletic Association. Waldorf University drops to 4-2, with both of their losses coming against VCSU.

A pair of freshman skill players contributed career games for the Vikings on Saturday. Senior quarterback Jalen Pfeifer, who went 3-for-4 on the game-winning drive, finished the game 16-for-32 for 263 yards and two touchdowns – both of which came in the fourth quarter. Valley City State kicker Nico Magana trimmed the deficit to 13-12 with a third-quarter field goal, setting up the exciting fourth quarter. The Vikings took the lead with an 88-yard touchdown drive early in the fourth quarter. A 51-yard strike from Pfeifer to Dumond put the Vikings on the 3-yard line, and then Pfeifer found tight end Zane Schuchard for a 3-yard touchdown – the first of his career.

Schuchard’s score put VCSU ahead 18-13 after the Vikings failed to convert the 2-point attempt.

Waldorf responded late in the quarter with an 82-yard touchdown drive, capped when quarterback Tyler O-Hara complete a fourth-and-goal pass to Ryan Martinez for a 5-yard score. The Warriors converted the 2-point attempt to take a 21-18 lead with 2:06 remaining.

UJ 3  Midland 1

The University of Jamestown women’s volleyball team won its tenth straight match to open the season, defeating Midland (Neb.) University 3-1 Saturday evening at Harold Newman Arena. Set scores were 23-25, 31-29, 27-25, and 26-24.

The Warriors proved to be competitive from the start, reeling off five straight points to break a 12-12 tie in the first set. Down 17-12, UJ responded with five straight points of their own to tie the set at 17. Tied once again at 22, Midland took advantage of three Jimmie attack errors over the final four points for the 25-23 opening set win.

In a back-and-forth second set, Jamestown took leads of 17-14, 18-15, and 21-17 only to have Midland score four straight to tie the set at 21. UJ had four set point opportunities, but the Warriors were able to stave them off and continue play. Tied 29-29, an attack error by Midland and a Kalli Hegerle (JR/West Fargo, N.D.) kill ended up being the difference as the Jimmies tied the match at 1-1.

Set three saw the Warriors take control early on, building leads of 10-4, 15-7, and 18-10.  It appeared the Warriors were on the way to taking a 2-1 match lead as they held a 23-16 set advantage, but Jamestown showed resilience in taking the next seven points to knot things up at 23. Back-to-back kills from Anna Holen (JR/LaMoure, N.D.) ended the set with UJ winning 27-25.

Jamestown trailed 8-7 in the fourth set before a 9-2 run created some separation and a momentum shift. Midland rallied to get within one at 20-19 and 22-21, then tied the set at 24. A Holen kill followed by a Warrior attack error sealed the deal for the home team.

Nicole Schmitz (FR/Oakes, N.D.) had a career night with 18 kills and hit .378 in 37 attempts to lead the Jimmies. Holen and Corina Huff (SR/Breezy Point, Minn.) had 12 kills each and Taylor Sabinash (JR/Kensal, N.D.) eight.

Dodgers claim 25th pennant

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers are National League champions for the 25th time after winning the last three games of their NLCS against Atlanta.

The Dodgers erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 before completing a 4-3 win over the Braves in Game 7. Cody Bellinger gave L.A. the lead with a solo homer off Chris Martin in the seventh, one inning after Kiké (KEE’-kay) Hernández tied it with a solo blast.

Will Smith furnished a two-run single for the Dodgers, who will take on the Rays in the World Series beginning Tuesday.

The Braves were held to three hits, none after Austin Riley’s RBI single with nobody out in the fourth inning.

Atlanta had runners on second and third with no outs in the fourth before a pair of base-running blunders led to a 5-2-5-6 double play. The Braves put just one player on base the rest of the night and were robbed of a home run when right fielder Mookie Betts reached above the wall to take one away from Freddie Freeman.

Winning pitcher Julio Urias retired all nine hitters he faced to get to 2-0 in the series.

Although the Dodgers are in the World Series for the third time in four years, they are seeking their first championship since 1988.

NLCS-MVP

Dodgers’ Seager NLCS MVP after 5 HRS, 11 RBIs against Braves

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Corey Seager bashed his way to NLCS MVP.

Once the Los Angeles Dodgers finally finished off the Atlanta Braves, the choice was obvious.

Seager helped power Los Angeles to its third World Series in four years, and another chance to win its first title since 1988. The sweet-swinging shortstop set NLCS records with five homers and 11 RBIs as the Dodgers eliminated the Braves in seven games.

Even though he went 0 for 5 and left five runners on base in the Dodgers’ clinching 4-3 win Sunday night, Seager homered three times in the previous two games when they were also facing elimination. Seager, the 2016 NL Rookie of the Year, homered twice in a 7-3 win in Game 5 on Friday night. The next day, his solo homer ignited a a three-run first inning that was more than enough as Walker Buehler pitched six scoreless innings in a 3-1 win.

Seager’s six homers and 15 RBIs overall are already Dodgers records for a single postseason — passing the five homers by Davey Lopes in 1978 and Justin Turner’s 14 RBIs three years ago. Seager is the first shortstop with more than three homers in any series in MLB postseason history.

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Marlins executive Michael Hill is leaving the franchise after 19 seasons.

Ryan completed 30 of 40 passes for 371 yards as Atlanta won its first game under interim coach Raheem Morris. Kirk Cousins threw three interceptions in the first half for the first time in his career, leading to 17 Falcons points. Each team is 1-5.

— Lamar Jackson threw for a touchdown and ran for a score while the Ravens were building a 24-6 lead in a 30-28 victory at Philadelphia. Jackson ran for a 37-yard TD and had 108 yards on the ground to go with his 186 yards passing. Carson Wentz tossed two TD passes, but he was sacked six times and was stopped on a two-point conversion attempt that would have tied the game with 1:55 to play.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers spotted the Green Bay Packers a 10-0 lead before storming toward a 38-10 victory. The Bucs took the lead with help from Aaron Rodgers, whose first two interceptions of the season led to two touchdowns for Tampa Bay.

Cornerback Jamel Dean broke on Rodgers’ sideline throw intended for Davante Adams and returned the pick 32 yards to get the Bucs rolling. Safety Mike Edwards returned a second interception to the Green Bay 2 to set up Ronald Jones’ rushing TD on the next play, giving the Buccaneers a 14-10 lead.

Neither quarterback threw for more than 170 yards in a clash of the very best at their position. Tom Brady threw for 166 yards and two TDs without an interception before giving way to Blaine Gabbert.

The Buccaneers improved to 4-2 and dropped the Packers to 4-1.

— Chicago’s defense forced three turnovers and sacked Teddy Bridgewater four times in a 23-16 verdict over the Panthers. Nick Foles threw for one touchdown and ran for another as the 5-1 Bears improved to 3-0 on the road for the first time since their 2006 NFC championship season. Carolina had a failed fourth down play and an interception on its last two series to fall to 3-3.

— Brandon McManus drilled six field goals and linebacker Malik Reed came up with a big sack late to help the Broncos hold on for an 18-12 win over the Patriots. The Broncos’ defense came up with two interceptions and a fumble recovery after entering the game with just two takeaways. Both teams are 2-3 after finally playing a game that was twice postponed due to positive coronavirus tests.

If the Steelers were trying to make a statement on Sunday, it was loud and clear as they crushed the Browns by a 38-7 margin.

James Conner ran for 101 yards and a touchdown in the Steelers’ 17th consecutive victory over the Browns at Heinz Field. Ben Roethlisberger added 162 yards passing and a touchdown, and Chase Claypool ran for a score while grabbing four passes for 74 yards.

The Steelers sacked aching Baker Mayfield four times, picked him off twice and chased him late in the third quarter with the game out of reach. The NFL’s top rushing offense managed 75 yards on the ground, 113 below its season average.

The 5-0 Steelers still lead the AFC North by a half-game over Baltimore. The Browns are third in the division at 4-2 after ending a four-game winning streak.

— The Titans are 5-0 after Derrick Henry took a direct snap and ran 5 yards for a touchdown 3:30 into overtime to end a 42-36 comeback win over the Texans. Deshaun Watson’s fourth TD pass put Houston up 36-29 with 1:50 left in regulation, but a failed 2-point conversion attempt gave Tennessee a chance to force overtime. Ryan Tannehill marched the Titans 76 yards on the ensuing series and found A.J. Brown on a 6-yard TD pass with 4 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Houston is 1-5.

— Jimmy Garoppolo threw three TD passes while the 49ers were building a 21-6 lead in the first half of a 24-16 victory against the Rams. Garoppolo was unable to keep up his fast start to the game but still finished 23 for 33 for 268 yards a week after being pulled from a game. Jason Verrett’s first interception in more than four years ended the Rams’ final threat to tie the game. Los Angeles is 4-2 and the 49ers are 3-3.

— The Colts trailed 21-0 until Philip Rivers tossed three touchdown passes, including the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter of a 31-27 triumph against Cincinnati. Rivers wound up 29 of 44 with 371 yards as Indianapolis tied the biggest regular-season comeback in franchise history. Giovanni Bernard, Joe Burrow and Joe Mixon had short scoring runs before the 1-4-1 Bengals, who blew a lead of at least 21 points for the fifth time ever.

— Ryan Fitzpatrick threw for three touchdowns and the Dolphins posted their first shutout in six years by downing the Jets, 24-0. The Dolphins didn’t allow a third-down conversion until the fourth quarter and reached .500 for the first time under second-year coach Brian Flores. The game was so lopsided that Miami rookie Tua Tagovailoa (TOO’-uh tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’-ah) made his NFL debut in mop-up duty with 2:27 left. The Jets are 0-6 for the first time in 24 years.

— The Lions rolled to a 34-16 win against the Jaguars as rookie D’Andre Swift ran for a season-high 116 yards and two touchdowns. — The Giants have their first victory under coach Joe Judge after Tae Crowder scooped up a fumble and ran 43 yards for a touchdown with 3:28 left in a 20-19 win over Washington. Kyle Allen hit Cam Simms for a 22-yard TD in the final minute, but Allen threw an incompletion on the conversion attempt after Washington coach Ron Rivera elected to go for the win. Daniel Jones threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Darius Slayton and Graham Gano kicked two field goals as the 1-5 Giants dropped Washington to 1-5.

In world and national news…

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Florida begins in-person early voting in much of the state with the Trump campaign trying to cut into an early advantage Democrats have posted in mail-in votes in the key swing state. With its 29 electoral votes, Florida is crucial to both candidates but especially so for President Donald Trump. A Florida loss would make it nearly impossible for Trump to reach the 270 electoral votes needed to retain the White House over former Democratic Vice President Joe Biden. Under state law, counties can offer early voting starting Monday and many do, including Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach and other population centers. The latest a county can start early voting is Saturday.

CARSON CITY, Nev. (AP) — President Donald Trump and his Democratic rival Joe Biden have been on offense, with each campaigning in states they’re trying to flip during the Nov. 3 election that’s just over two weeks away. Trump began Sunday in Nevada, making a rare visit to church before an evening rally in Carson City. Nevada was once considered a battleground, but the state hasn’t swung for a Republican presidential contender since 2004. Biden attended Mass in Delaware before flying to North Carolina. A Democratic presidential candidate hasn’t won North Carolina since Barack Obama in 2008.

LONDON (AP) — The world’s number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 has surpassed 40 million. The milestone was hit Monday according to Johns Hopkins University, which collates tallies from around the world. The actual figure is likely to be far higher, as testing has been variable, many people have had no symptoms and some governments have concealed the true number of cases. The U.S., Brazil and India are reporting by far the highest numbers of cases, although the increase in recent weeks has been driven by a surge of new infections in Europe. Last week, the World Health Organization said Europe had a reported a record high of nearly 700,000 new cases and that the region was responsible for about a third of cases globally.

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran says it again breaks the record for its highest single-day death toll from the coronavirus with 337 people dead. The announcement Monday from Health Ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari. The previous single-day record was 279. The grim milestone represents a significant spike from the previous single-day death toll record of 279. The Islamic Republic has seen the worst outbreak in the Middle East with a death toll that topped 30,000 this week.

BEIJING (AP) — China’s shaky economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic is gaining strength as consumers return to shopping malls and auto dealerships while the United States and Europe endure painful contractions. Official data show the world’s second-largest economy expanded by 4.9% over a year ago in the latest quarter. Retail spending rebounded to above pre-virus levels for the first time and factory output rose, boosted by demand for exports of masks and other medical supplies. China, where the pandemic began in December, became the first major economy to return to growth after the ruling Communist Party declared the disease under control in March and began reopening factories, shops and offices.

HANOI, Vietnam. (AP) — Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga has agreed with his Vietnamese counterpart to step up defense and security cooperation in the face of China’s expanding influence. Suga’s meeting with Vietnam’s Nguyen Xuan Phuc is his first overseas summit since taking office last month. The two leaders set a basic agreement allowing Japan to export defense equipment and technology to Vietnam. Japan has made several such agreements in recent years to strengthen ties with Southeast Asia and sustain its own defense industry. Suga and Phuc signed other agreements on economic cooperation and agreed to reopen flights between Vietnam and Japan, both of which have somewhat managed to stabilize COVID-19 outbreaks.
