BISMARCK, N.D. (AP Jun 20, 2013) – Heavy rain is leading to flash flooding in parts of North Dakota.
The National Weather Service says as much as 8 inches of rain has fallen in the southeastern city of Gwinner since midnight, swamping streets and flooding some buildings including the Bobcat Co. plant.
The North Dakota Department of Transportation has reopened Highway 32 between Gwinner and Lisbon after the water receded. Highway 13 remains closed.
Motorists are advised to take alternate routes. There is also water on the roadway ND Highway 18 in Wyndmere. Traffic is allowed with speeds are reduced.
The following highways are affected by flood waters, but remain open to traffic, with traffic speeds reduced:
- ND Highway 14, twelve miles north of Towner
- US Highway 83, nine miles north of Max – Temporary grade raise in place with single lanes of traffic in both directions.
- ND 53, near Benedict
- ND Highway 200, four miles west of Hurdsfield.
- ND Highway 200, four miles east of Hurdsfield – Temporary Grade raise in place with a single lane of traffic.
Fluctuating water levels make it difficult to predict when and where water will go over a roadway or recede from the roadway. The NDDOT encourages motorists to check road conditions before traveling due to rapidly changing conditions.
