Saturday, Men’s College Soccer: (UJ) Jake Foscalina’s 47th-minute goal broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the game winner as Northwestern (Iowa) College defeated the University of Jamestown men’s soccer team 2-1 Saturday at the Jimmie Turf Field.

The Red Raiders (10-3, 8-3 Great Plains Athletic Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the seventh minute on Joshua Wingfield’s third goal of the season.

UJ (5-7, 4-6 GPAC) did not trail for long, as Ruben Zepeda (SR/Puebla, Mexico) tied the match 25 seconds later, taking a pass from Aaron Pike (JR/Milton Keynes, England) and making it 1-1.

Jamestown put three more shots on target in the first half following Zepeda’s goal, but Northwestern goalkeeper Ezekiel Foltz was able to turn all three aside.

Foscalina’s first attempt on goal in the 47th minute was turned away by Jimmie goalkeeper Alex Hamer (JR/Solihull, England), but the rebound went directly back to Foscalina and he put the ball in the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.

Zepeda had a chance to tie the game for Jamestown in the 60th minute, only to have his shot carom off the right post.

Shots ended 11-8 in favor of the Jimmies, and shots on goal were even at seven. UJ won eight corner kicks to Northwestern’s four.

UJ will enter next spring’s GPAC conference tournament as the seventh seed and will face Briar Cliff (Iowa) University. Northwestern wrapped up the fourth seed and will host Concordia (Neb.) University. Tournament dates will be announced by the conference office next week.
