North Dakota health officials say hospitalizations due the coronavirus dropped from 93 to 85 in the last day, with 13 patients currently requiring treatment in intensive care units. Medical facilities across the state have seen a steady drop in patients since the middle of November, a time when many of the largest facilities scrambled to provide staffed ICU beds. The state’s hospital tracker shows there are currently 31 staffed ICU beds and 326 staffed inpatient beds available throughout the state. Health officials reported 341 new positive tests in the last 24 hours, for a total of 93,832 since the pandemic began. Nearly 7,000 tests were processed, for a daily positive rate of 5.4%.

Jamestown (CSi) The Fargo VA Healthcare System  is moving ahead with plans, as a priority for the future “Fisher House,” construction.

On Wednesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Veterans Service Officer, David Bratton said the Fisher House will be a large facility to  free of charge, temporarily accommodate families of veterans requiring extended services at the Fargo VA facilities.

He will have more information on the construction plans when available.

He pointed out that over 146,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been given to veterans, noting that the prioritization list for veteran vaccinations will be forthcoming for local VA healthcare officials, who will then be contacting veterans will when they will be able to get the vaccine.

David informs veterans that the VA has launched a toll free telephone number, as a one-stop information center.  The number is 1-800-MyVA411.

He added that the Burleigh County Van is still not available to transport veterans to the Fargo VA.

The van has not been available the past few months due to pandemic protocols, concerning physical distancing of riders in the van.

David is available at his office for phone calls at 252-9043, with the office open Monday through Friday from 8-a.m. to noon, and 1-p.m., to 5-p.m.

If a face to face meeting is required he will meet with clients upstairs at the Jamestown Law Enforcement Center lobby.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A man serving a life sentence for the murders of two U.S. marshals who were killed in a shootout near a small North Dakota town nearly four decades ago wants to be released from prison after testing positive for COVID-19.

KFGO reports that 67-year-old Scott Faul has been in federal custody since 1983. Faul, along with Gordon Kahl and Kahl’s son, Yorie, were involved in a shootout with law enforcement officers near Medina, about 120 miles (193.12 kilometers) west of Fargo. The shooting resulted in the deaths of U.S. Marshal Kenneth Muir and Deputy Marshal Robert Cheshire. The incident gained national attention in part because Gordon Kahl was a leader of a group of tax protesters.

Police are using tear gas and percussion grenades to begin clearing pro-Trump protesters from the grounds of the U.S. Capitol ahead of a curfew in Washington.

Police donned gas masks as they moved in Wednesday evening with force to clear protesters from the Capitol grounds shortly before a curfew took hold. In the moments before, there were violent clashes between the police and protesters, who tore railing for the inauguration scaffolding and threw it at the officers.

Police used tear gas and percussion grenades to break up the crowd, which began dispersing.

Dozens of supporters of President Donald Trump breached security perimeter and entered the Capitol as Congress was meeting, expected to vote to affirm Democrat Joe Biden’s presidential win. They were seen fighting with officers both inside the building and outside.

Police said at least one person was shot inside the Capitol; their condition was not immediately known.

The district’s police chief said at least 13 people were arrested, and five firearms had been recovered during the pro-Trump protests on Wednesday.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. Capitol locked down Wednesday with lawmakers inside as violent clashes broke out between supporters of President Donald Trump police. Dozens of people breached security perimeters at the Capitol and lawmakers inside the House chamber were told to put on gas masks as tear gas was fired in the Rotunda. Lawmakers had been meeting to affirm Joe Biden’s victory. The skirmishes occurred outside the building, in the very spot president-elect Biden will be inaugurated in just two weeks. Protesters tore down metal barricades at the bottom of the Capitol’s steps and were met by officers in riot gear. Some tried to push past the officers who held shields and officers could be seen firing pepper spray into the crowd to keep them back.

ATLANTA (AP) — Democrats have won both Georgia Senate seats — and with them, the U.S. Senate majority. That’s a stunning defeat for President Donald Trump in his final days in office and it dramatically improves the fate of President-elect Joe Biden’s progressive agenda. Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock, Democratic challengers who represented the diversity of their party’s evolving coalition, defeated Republicans David Perdue and Kelly Loeffler. The twin victories Wednesday end nearly two decades in which Democrats have been shut out of statewide victories in Georgia. Biden became the first Democratic presidential candidate to carry the state since 1992.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is urging his fellow Republicans to abandon their effort to overrule President-elect Joe Biden’s election triumph. For the Kentucky Republican it’s a direct rebuke of defeated President Donald Trump. And McConnell is asserting that the GOP drive against Biden threatens the democratic foundations of the country. McConnell spoke as Congress began the formal process on Wednesday of affirming Biden’s electoral vote victory over Trump. The challenges against Biden’s win are certain to fail. It’s the latest instance of McConnell taking on Trump in Trump’s final days in office.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — Georgia’s Senate runoff elections were a clash of two closely matched coalitions, with Democrat Raphael Warnock edging out his rival in the one-time Republican stronghold. Warnock and fellow Democrat Jon Ossoff — whose race is still too early to call — were relying on the backing of Black voters, younger voters, people earning less than $50,000 and newcomers to the state. That’s according to AP VoteCast, a survey of voters in Tuesday’s high-stakes Senate contests. The Republican coalition backing Kelly Loeffler and David Perdue was the mirror opposite: white, older, wealthier and longtime Georgia residents.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department says about 3% of its email accounts could be compromised as part of a massive breach of federal government agencies that U.S. officials have linked to Russia. No classified systems are believed to have been affected, according to a statement from Justice Department spokesman Marc Raimondi. The statement did not identify who the potentially compromised email accounts may belong to. And it’s not immediately clear whether the intrusion at the Justice Department and other agencies included access to data other than email because Microsoft’s Office 365 includes multiple document-sharing and collaborative components.

 

(AP)  U.S. health officials say they have reports of at least 29 people developing severe allergic reactions to the coronavirus vaccines, but they stress that the risk for most people is low. The CDC released its latest count of side effects suffered by more than 5.3 million people who have been vaccinated. The 29 had suffered anaphylaxis, a life-threatening allergic reaction that can be controlled through an epinephrine injection. That’s a rate of about 5.5 cases per million people, which is roughly four times higher than the rate seen in a study of people who got flu shots. Anyone who has a severe reaction to a first dose should not get a second dose of the vaccine, the CDC says.
