Bismarck (NDDoH)- The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) Public Health Laboratory has identified a software malfunction on a piece of laboratory equipment. The malfunction affected 181 positive COVID-19 results that took place between Dec. 25, 2020 – Jan. 8, 2021. The issue has been resolved, the results will be considered inconclusive and the individuals have been notified of the error.
Dr. Christie Massen, Chief Laboratory Officer for the NDDoH , says, “On Friday, Jan. 8, the laboratory discovered a software issue while doing additional testing for further data analysis on another platform and there was a discrepancy in the results,” This prompted an immediate look back which identified the same issue on previous runs.”
Although the issue has been resolved, laboratorians have continued to manually review all raw data prior to the results being released. In addition, the laboratory staff has increased the frequency of their routine maintenance and software verification.
Massen says, “While these lab issues are rare, we are committed to transparency to the public and the individuals we serve. We take these malfunctions seriously and work to identify and quickly resolve the issues.”
The NDDoH Public Health Lab has analyzed over 932,000 samples since the pandemic began in March 2020.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A woman has been arrested for a shooting at a Fargo motel. Police say officers were called to Motel 6 early Wednesday morning on a report of a domestic dispute involving a man and woman. GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Investigators say alcohol may have played a role in a traffic crash that killed three people and injured two others in Grand Forks last weekend. Police say the 21-year-old driver who caused the crash, Jenessa Kelley of Crookston, Minnesota, died of her injuries as well as two people in one of the three vehicles she struck. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A bill that would prohibit a governor from giving cash or endorsing a member of the Legislature is getting a cool reception from both GOP and Democratic leaders. The legislation introduced by Rep. Jeffery Magrum comes after GOP Gov. Doug Burgum contributed millions of dollars to several candidates in elections last year in an attempt to remove some incumbents from his own party. Magrum says Burgum crossed the separation-of-powers-line by reaching deep into his own pockets to buy a Legislature more obliging to his wishes. Legislative leaders say the contributions are “freedom of speech.”
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — The Republican-led Legislature has signaled its reluctance to back legislation that would overhaul a state law that makes it a felony for people who have HIV to knowingly transmit the disease. Under North Dakota law, a person convicted of exposing a partner to HIV without their consent could face up to 20 years in prison. It’s only an infraction with up to a $1,000 fine for someone who knowingly transmits other sexually transmitted diseases. Rep. Gretchen Dobervich said current law is inconsistent and outdated. A 14-member House panel gave the bill filed by Democrats a “do not pass” recommendation.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A budget analyst tells North Dakota lawmakers that the state will likely see “rough sailing” early in the year but there’s reason for optimism in the long run. In his revenue forecast to the House and Senate appropriations committees, Curtis Smith of IHS Markit analysts said Tuesday that revenues could lag for up to six months. North Dakota’s oil tax revenue plummeted amid the coronavirus pandemic, falling more than $875 million behind a forecast for the 2019-21 budget cycle. Smith’s report predicts “a good recovery” for the end of 2021.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – Three days after seeing their 9-game winning streak come to an end, the Valley City State men’s basketball team was back to its winning ways Tuesday
All 14 Vikings scored Tuesday night as Valley City State coasted to its 10th win of the season, a 105-48 victory over Oak Hills Christian College.
“It was nice to have all our guys back,” said VCSU head coach Ryan Montgomery, whose team has played shorthanded the last three contests. “We learned a lot in this game about what it means to play with others instead of individual play.”
The Vikings, who are receiving votes in the latest NAIA Top 25 Poll, improve to 10-2 overall this season. Oak Hills drops to 4-8.
VCSU leading scorer Eddie Oyet – who missed the last three games – wasted little time in finding his groove again. The 6-foot-3 junior scored a team-high 23 points off the bench Tuesday. Oyet has now scored double figures in seven straight games – including four games over 20 points.
Chris Thompson added 14 points, and Connor Entzi poured in 12. All 14 Vikings who played in the game scored at least two points, and 12 different players had at least one assist. Jalen Addison led the distribution with five assists while Joshua Kelly tallied four assists.
The Vikings forced 19 first-half turnovers as they built a 53-22 lead at the break and coasted in the second half. VCSU dished out 27 assists on 43 made baskets and forced Oak Hills into 27 turnovers in the game. The 105 points was a season-high for VCSU.
Valley City State shot 51 percent from the field (43-85), 36 percent on 3’s (15-42) and 80 percent at the line (4-5). Oak Hills shot 28 percent overall (17-60), 27 percent on 3’s (10-37) and 80 percent on free throws (4-5).
Valley City State now shifts its focus to a big conference weekend at home. The Vikings host Waldorf University on Friday and then host Viterbo University on Saturday. Viterbo and Waldorf are both 1-2 in conference play while the Vikings are 2-1 in the North Star Athletic Association.
“This game helped us get ready for Friday and Saturday,” said Montgomery. “We’re going to face a hot Waldorf team Friday and a disciplined Viterbo team on Saturday. ”
Up next: Valley City State resumes conference play with a pair of home games this weekend. Friday’s doubleheader against Waldorf starts with the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s games against Viterbo are at 3 and 5 p.m.

Dakota Mathias’ only basket of the game was a go-ahead 3-pointer with 26.1 seconds left. VIRUS OUTBREAK-NBA
UNDATED (AP) — With five games called off this week already and more teams dealing with virus-related issues, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association have enacted additional rules in the hope of keeping the season going safely.
Among the new policies: for “at least the next two weeks,” the league and union said Tuesday, players and team staff will have to remain at their residence when in their home markets and will be prohibited from leaving their hotels or having outside guests when on the road.
Tonight’s matchup in Chicago between the Bulls and the Boston Celtics has been postponed because of coronavirus concerns. Tomorrow’s Wizards-Jazz game in Washington is the latest to be scrubbed.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Washington Wizards say two of their players are going on the NBA’s health and safety protocols list.
The Wizards canceled their Tuesday practice, saying that decision was made “out of an abundance of caution.” They beat the Suns on Monday and are scheduled to host the Jazz on Wednesday. The Wizards did not identify the two players.
— The Nets and the NBA are looking into Kyrie Irving’s actions after a video showed the point guard at an indoor gathering while not wearing a mask. Irving missed Tuesday’s game against Denver, his fourth straight for what the Nets are calling personal reasons. He will likely face a quarantine period upon his return and could be fined if the NBA determines he violated the rules in place during the coronavirus pandemic.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-COLLEGE BASKETBALL
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — The Southeastern Conference has postponed the Tuesday night basketball game between in-state rivals Tennessee and Vanderbilt. It’s because of a combination of positive coronavirus tests, contact tracing and quarantining within the Commodores’ program.
The game was a late addition to the schedule because of COVID-19 issues at Missouri, where Vanderbilt had been scheduled to play, and at South Carolina, Tennessee’s originally scheduled opponent.
Vanderbilt is still set to visit Tennessee on Saturday night as originally scheduled.
In other virus-related developments in college basketball:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Thousands of excited football fans ignored pandemic precautions and partied in streets around the University of Alabama after the Crimson Tide defeated Ohio State for the national championship.
City officials had urged people to watch the game at home and celebrate privately to prevent the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19. But students and others poured out of jam-packed bars near campus as time expired in Miami.
The massive crowd that resulted was recorded by traffic cameras and images posted on social media. Many of the fans screaming and cheering in the middle of the street didn’t take basic precautions like wearing face masks.

— Offensive tackle Jared Veldheer is back with the Packers. The move gives the 33-year-old veteran an opportunity to compete in playoff games for different teams on back-to-back weekends. Veldheer was the Colts’ starting left tackle for their 27-24 AFC first-round playoff loss to the Bills last weekend. Green Bay plays the Rams on Saturday.
— Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers says he will be a guest host on “Jeopardy!” during the offseason. The show is currently using a series of interim hosts to replace Alex Trebek, who died of cancer on Nov. 8. Rodgers was a winning “Celebrity Jeopardy!” contestant in 2015.
Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow expects to start running on his surgically repaired left knee next month and is confident he’ll be ready to start next season. The timetable is based on zero setbacks in the rigorous rehab of his knee.
The rookie quarterback suffered torn ligaments in a Nov. 22 loss to Washington and had surgery in early December.
— As they wait for Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio and top cornerback Denzel Ward to return from COVID-19 and join their playoff run, the Browns have lost their replacements to injuries. Cleveland placed guard Michael Dunn and cornerback Robert Jackson on injured reserve, losing two players who started Sunday’s playoff win at Pittsburgh. Bitonio and Ward remain sidelined with the virus.
— The Bills have reached an agreement to sign running back Devonta Freeman to their practice squad. However, he must first undergo the NFL’s COVID-19 protocols before being allowed to practice, making it unlikely he’ll be available for this weekend’s playoff game against the Ravens.
— Colts left tackle Anthony Castonzo has announced his retirement after 10 NFL seasons. His decision came three days after the Colts were eliminated from the playoffs with a 27-24 wild-card round loss at Buffalo and less than two weeks after he had season-ending ankle surgery.

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. officials say the FBI warned law enforcement agencies ahead of last week’s breach of the U.S. Capitol about the potential for extremist-driven violence. That contradicts earlier statements that law enforcement agencies were caught off guard by the assault by supporters of President Donald Trump. Meanwhile, prosecutors are weighing sedition charges against at least some of the Trump loyalists who stormed the U.S. Capitol last week. The acting U.S. attorney in Washington, Michael Sherwin, says trespassing and other misdemeanor counts against some of the dozens arrested so far may still be upgraded to sedition. Sedition is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — State TV reports that Iran’s navy has begun a short-range missile drill in the Gulf of Oman and inaugurated its largest military vessel amid heightened tensions over the country’s nuclear program and a U.S. pressure campaign against the Islamic Republic. The two-day missile drill starting Wednesday was being held in the gulf’s southeastern waters, and two new Iran-made warships joined the exercise. President Donald Trump in 2018 unilaterally withdrew the U.S. from Iran’s nuclear deal, in which Tehran had agreed to limit its uranium enrichment in exchange for the lifting of economic sanctions. Iran has since gradually and publicly abandoned the deal’s limits on its nuclear development.
JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Divers looking for a crashed plane’s cockpit voice recorder are searching in mud and plane debris on the seabed between Indonesian islands. They’re looking to retrieve information key to learning why the Sriwijaya Air jet nosedived into the water over the weekend. The divers earlier recovered the flight data recorder from the jet with 62 people aboard. The 26-year-old Boeing plane had resumed commercial flights last month after almost nine months out of service during the coronavirus pandemic. Indonesian transportation officials say an inspection for engine corrosion was done in December before it returned to service.
HONG KONG (AP) — YouTube has suspended U.S. President Donald Trump’s channel for at least a week amid concerns around “ongoing potential for violence,” making it the latest platform to limit the president’s online activities. The Google-owned platform removed content that was uploaded on January 12 from the Donald J. Trump channel for inciting violence, although it was not immediately clear which videos in question were in violation. The move to curtail Trump comes after a mob of his supporters, urged on by his rhetoric, stormed the Capitol last week trying to stop Congress from certifying President-elect Joe Biden’s win. YouTube said that the channel had its “1st strike”, adding it indefinitely disabled comments on the channel.
(AP) A month after federal regulators ordered it to disclose how its practices affect children and teenagers, TikTok is tightening its privacy practices for the under-18 crowd. Starting on Wednesday, the default privacy setting for accounts with users aged 13 to 15 will be private. That means only someone the user approves as a follower can view their videos, which was not the case previously. But users can still change this setting if they want. Older teenagers won’t see this default setting change. TikTok is also blocking users’ ability to download videos created by those 15 or younger.
