Update…

Jamestown (CVHD) – Central Valley Health District (CVHD) would like to provide an update regarding COVID-19 vaccine distribution in Stutsman and Logan counties. CVHD is not expecting vaccine for Phase 1B, specifically those persons 75 and older the week of January 18. Vaccine distribution in North Dakota this week is being redirected to other healthcare providers throughout the state in an effort to provide more doses to those agencies.

Robin Iszler, Unit Administrator, states “we have received Moderna vaccine this week [January 18] to provide the second dose of COVID vaccine to those healthcare providers, first responders, long term care facilities that were vaccinated the week of December 21.”

CVHD serves the rural areas in Stutsman and Logan counties. Iszler also states “we are working to vaccinate Phase 1A and 1B in rural areas, including the cities of Gackle and Napoleon and will be reaching out to those interested in being vaccinated in those communities.”

CVHD encourages individuals 75 and older interested in the COVID vaccine to get complete the Phase 1A/1B Vaccination Interest Survey located on our website www.centralvalleyhealth.org. Completing the survey does not register participants for an appointment, rather collects information for participants to be contacted with upcoming vaccine clinic information.

“Within 12 hours of publishing the vaccine interest survey, 250+ people had already completed it expressing interest in the vaccine,” states Iszler. Those who have completed the survey already will be put on a list to be contacted with future vaccination clinic dates. The survey does require the entry of an email address, as it is the fastest way for CVHD to contact a mass amount of people at one time. Those without an email address are encouraged to recruit a family member or friend to assist them completed the survey, as well as vaccination appointment registration when it becomes available.

“We know that there is a lot of interest in the vaccine and we encourage the public to continue to be patient while waiting for your turn to be vaccinated,” says Iszler.

Jamestown (JPD) Jamestown Police reports that, on January 15, 2021, during the late evening,officers of the Jamestown police department became aware of a number of dangerous pills being sold in the Jamestown area.

Police Chief Scott Edinger says, theyare described as small light blue round pills marked”M”on one side and “30”on the other.If you have any of these pills,please do not ingest or handle them. Pills with this description are like those potentially involved in a number of overdoses in the area.

Anyone with information about these pills are asked to call the Jamestown police department at 701-252-2414.

The North Dakota Department of Health (NDDoH) reported Sunday that vaccine priority groups originally announced on Dec. 31 will remain in effect. The reminder was issued in response to the federal government’s recommendation earlier this week that states expand the range of individuals immediately eligible to receive the vaccine, while noting it remains the state’s decision.

North Dakota health officials are reporting a drop in hospitalizations due to the coronavirus and a low percentage of positive daily tests as the state prepares to end its mask mandate and ease business restrictions. The Sunday update showed that hospitalizations were down 10 from Saturday, to 85. Officials say 152 of 4,781 tests processed in the last day came back positive, for a daily positivity rate of 3.61%. There were three new deaths. Data released Saturday by The COVID Tracking Project showed about 371 new cases per 100,000 people in North Dakota over the past two weeks, which ranks 49th in the country per capita. One in every 658 people in North Dakota tested positive in the past week.

Bismarck (CSi) Governor Doug Burgum held a COVID-19 News Briefing Friday at the state capital in Bismarck.

Joining him were Molly Howell, NDDoH Immunization Program Manager, and Dr. Joshua Ranum of West River Health Services in Hettinger.

Burgum said, at this point North Dakota is number one in the nation with the percentage of vaccine dosages administered at 68 percent, 4^th in the nation per capita.

He restated mitigation efforts…physical distancing, and frequent hand washing with soap and water. He said those are practical ways, to break the chain of transmission, noting those who are asymptomatic.

He said the state emergency is not over, and will not be rescinded in the near future, adding that state officials continue to work with local officials during the COVID Emergency, concerning strategies. He pointed out that President-Elect Biden has announced the $1.9 million COVID Rescue Plan, with the dollars to be distributed to states.

Burgum says hospitalization have decline in North Dakota since November, but has increased the past few days.

He noted that college students are returning to campus, and K-12 schools are increasing in person learning, which may increase the number positive cases being spread.

Burgum said the North Dakota National Guard continues to assist in various areas of the COVID fight.

Since mid-November when the state’s COVID-19 numbers peaked and the additional mitigation measures were implemented:

Active cases have dropped by over 80 percent, from 10,224 to 1,675;
Hospitalizations due to COVID-19 have decreased by nearly 74 percent, to 88 hospitalized today; and
The state’s 14-day test positivity rate is down roughly one-fourth from its peak, at 4.13 percent today, its lowest level since late August. According to Johns Hopkins University, North Dakota’s seven-day positivity rate is now the fourth-lowest rate in the nation, at 4.7 percent.

With those numbers, Burgum said, the statewide mask mandate will be allowed expire on Monday January 18, 2021, at 8-a.m., but he highly urges all residents continue to mask-up, noting local political subdivision may continue to have their own mask and other mandates, under emergency orders,and the state supports those locally enacted protocols. The Valley City Emergency Order was amended on January 5, under the North Dakota Moderate Risk protocols.

The Jamestown Emergency Order including the mask mandate continues until the pandemic is over, or until otherwise amended.

Also on January 18, at 8-a.m., business protocols will move from mandates to guidelines, that limits capacity for bars, restaurants and event venues.

The extension to Jan. 18 allowed for a 14-day incubation period to pass after Christmas and New Year’s to ensure the state wouldn’t see a surge in cases.

All North Dakota counties will remain in the Yellow, Moderate Risk level.

He said safe and effective vaccines have arrived, that will greatly assist in returning the state to normal activities., a key component in the “3 pronged” approach.

NDDoH Immunization Program Manager,Molly Howell said the state have received over 76-thousand doses of vaccine, with 69 percent of those administered, with reports of around 95 percent effectiveness.

Phase 1-B of vaccination distribution will start to be administered, at 10,000 doses to be administered per week. A vaccine locator is posted on the State Health Department web site, and at the Hot Line, 1-866-207-2880.

Dr. Joshua Ranum of West River Health Services in Hettinger, explained antibody therapeutics.

Almost all hospitals in North will have the medications available for IV infusions. He said vaccinations and the antibody therapeutics will greatly help in the mitigation of the virus, along with treatment of positive cases.

He stressed the importance of individuals who test positive for COVID-19 to immediately ask their doctors if they’re a candidate for early treatment with monoclonal antibody therapies that have been shown to reduce mortality and the need for hospitalization.

Jamestown (CSi) — A New Year means new dreams and new goals. One financial institution is giving back to the community of Jamestown in a big way this year that will help contribute to local dreams and goals.

Bismarck (NDNG)— The N.D. National Guard adjutant general, Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann announced additional support to the Jan. 20 presidential inauguration in Washington, D.C.

Approximately 130 Soldiers from the 816th Military Police Company will join 20 previously scheduled N.D. Guard members in support of the 59th presidential inauguration. The unit is headquartered in Dickinson, N.D., with a detachment in Bismarck.

Some Soldiers departed Friday afternoon with the balance departing over the weekend via three Texas Air National Guard transport aircraft.

“We are responding to a request from the D.C. National Guard seeking assistance,” said Dohrmann. “I continue to be proud of our Soldiers’ and Airmen’s ability to quickly respond when asked to serve. This short-term mobilization will not affect our ability to support the COVID-19 fight or any potential security operations within our state if called upon.”

Nationwide, the National Guard provides a myriad of support capabilities that can be seamlessly integrated with interagency partners to enhance inauguration support. These capabilities include security, communications, medical evacuation, and logistics. This support is in keeping with the National Guard’s role in homeland security.

The N.D. National Guard continues to provide the governor and civilian authorities properly manned, trained, and equipped forces whenever and wherever they are needed.

Fargo (LSS) — Lutheran Social Services of North Dakota — a non-profit agency with predecessor organizations dating to 1919 — has suspended programs and issued layoffs as part of a controlled liquidation plan.

The agency’s Board of Directors, after accepting reports from staff leadership, external advisers and legal counsel, passed a resolution that confirms actions leading to a liquidation, including a bankruptcy filing, if necessary.

The decision was driven in large part by continued struggles of Lutheran Social Services Housing, an affiliated program. LSS Housing, which started in 2009, impacted agency reserves and resulted in negative cash flow projections, according to Bob Otterson, who started Dec. 1, 2020, as the agency’s president and chief executive officer.

“LSS Housing in recent years has been draining the reserves of the affiliated agency,” Otterson said. “This financial pressure has hampered the ability of an essential, faith-based organization to serve its clients, specifically those in primary mission areas such as services to children, families, seniors and others.”

The action affects employment of 283 full-time and part-time staff and several long-term contractors.

LSS North Dakota leaders have informed employees about what they can expect in the coming days. Similarly, professionals in mental health and behavioral health programs are working with their clients on options for referrals and other services, Otterson said. The issues came to a head early this week, Otterson said.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. F (AP) — Grand Forks County residents will still be required to wear face coverings in many public settings even though Gov. Doug Burgum is dropping a statewide mask requirement effective Monday. Grand Forks Health Officer Dr. Joel Walz says the order goes into effect Monday as the state mandate expires. It requires masks in indoor businesses and public settings and outdoors when physical distancing isn’t possible in public. State health officials reported Saturday eight additional people have died from coronavirus complications, bringing the total number of deaths in North Dakota to 1,381 since the pandemic began.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Emails indicate North Dakota’s attorney general signed onto the Texas lawsuit over the presidential election despite expectations from some of his top officials that the legal challenge would fail. The state’s deputy solicitor general told Attorney General Wayne Stenehjem he thought the high court would deny the case “in one sentence.” The U.S. Supreme Court refused to hear the lawsuit which 17 states signed onto in support of Texas’ claim which sought to overturn the electoral votes in several key states on the grounds that non-legislative officials had wrongly changed election procedures because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Jamestown Emergency Order remains in effect, including the mask mandate, until the end of the pandemic, unless ended sooner. Valley City’s face mask mandates remains in place.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Republican lawmaker has introduced a bill that would seal arrestee’s mugshots from the public. The Bismarck Tribune reported Friday that Rep. Shannon Roers Jones’ proposal would make the photos confidential until the suspect is convicted or a suspect fails to appear in court or there’s a compelling safety interest warranting their release. Roers Jones says that the media sensationalizes mugshots and they remain online forever once posted, hurting people’s chances at finding jobs and romantic partners. North Dakota Newspaper Association attorney Jack McDonald counters that mugshots enhance stories, if people are concerned about their mugshots being published they shouldn’t commit the crime and the next logical step is not reporting the crime until the case is resolved.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Underage drinking in North Dakota ranks among the highest in the nation. A pair of bills being considered by the Legislature would do away with the prospect of jail time for offenders and also give a judge discretion whether to order treatment. One bill would make the penalty for underage drinking an infraction that would be punishable by up to a $1,000 fine. Democratic Rep. Zachary Ista says his bill is intended to bring the penalty for underage drinking in line with the sanction for marijuana use. The bill has bipartisan support and came at the request of some judges.

OMAHA, Neb. (UJ) — Five players scored in double figures as the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team concluded its five-game road swing with a 71-59 victory over College of Saint Mary Saturday afternoon.

Jamestown, which went 3-2 over the last five games, improves to 11-6 overall and 8-6 in the GPAC. CSM falls to 1-13 overall and 0-11 in the conference.

UJ led 12-6 after the first quarter, with both teams combining to make just eight of 29 shots in the period. The Flames went scoreless over the final 5:33 while Jamestown was able to get three-pointers by Macy Savela (SO/Mountain Iron, MN) and Noelle Josephson (JR/Ramsey, MN) to end on a 6-0 run.

After trailing by six with 7:49 before the half, CSM rallied to take a 25-24 lead on E’Saunjia Stewart’s basket. An Emma Stoehr (SR/Woodbury, MN) three-pointer began an 8-2 run for the Jimmies, giving them a 32-27 lead at halftime.

The Flames got as close as four points early in the third quarter, but a Josephson bucket and threes by Savela and Stoehr made it a double-digit lead with 3:20 left in the third.

Josephson’s three-point play at the 6:46 mark of the fourth capped off a 15-2 run, giving UJ its largest lead of the game at 61-43.

CSM would twice get within nine points, but the Jimmies were able to close out the game by going 6-for-6 at the foul line in the final 59 seconds.

Savela, Hanna DeMars, and Kia Tower (SO/Bigfork, MN) all had 16 points for Jamestown. Stoehr finished with 11, and Josephson 10. DeMars grabbed 12 rebounds for a double-double. Savela (4) and Stoehr (3) combined for seven of the Jimmies’ nine made threes.

Honnah Leo led the Flames with 16 points, followed by Stewart with 12 and Bailey White with 10.

The Jimmies return home to host Mount Marty (S.D.) University Saturday at 12 p.m.

UJ D-1 Hockey…

Jordon Kromm (FR/Calgary, Alberta)’s hat trick accounted for all of the offense the University of Jamestown hockey team needed in a 3-1 win over Minot State Saturday night at Wilson Arena.

Kromm recorded the 10th hat trick in program history and the second straight for the Jimmies.

Jamestown took a 1-0 lead at 3:52 in the first period with Kromm scoring on assists by Gage Thompson (SO/Valley City, N.D.) and Carter Johnson (JR/Meeteetse, Wyo.).

The Beavers tied the game at 10:26 of the second period on a goal from Blake Fournier, set up by Carter Barley and Landyn Cochrane.

Kromm broke the tie at 18:18 of the second, finding the puck on his stick after a faceoff to the left of the Minot State goaltender.

UJ added an insurance goal at 12:41 of the third, with Jed Butler (FR/Mazama, Wash.) finding Kromm for a 3-1 lead.

Neither team had success on the power play as the Beavers were 0-for-7 and the Jimmies 0-for-6 with the man advantage. Jamestown was whistled for nine minors, a double minor, a five-minute major, and two game misconducts. Minot State committed 11 minor penalties and had a game misconduct.

Tyson Brouwer (SR/Lethbridge, Alberta) made 20 stops in the win. Troy Martiniuk had 17 saves for the Beavers.

The teams conclude their weekend series Sunday in Minot with puck drop set for 4 p.m.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU)– Adriana Torres‘ all-around performance wasn’t enough to put the Vikings in the win column Saturday as the Valley City State women’s basketball team fell to Viterbo, 83-69.

Torres poured in a game-high 22 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out three assists to lead the Vikings. Dani Schwanke added 19 points and Maara Nelson scored 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting. Allie Critchley grabbed seven rebounds, dished out three assists, and added a pair of steals for the Saturday.

Valley City State falls to 3-7 on the season and 2-3 in the North Star Athletic Association. Viterbo improves to 4-2 overall and 3-1 in the NSAA.

The Vikings trailed 22-14 after the first 10 minutes but came alive in the second quarter as they learned how to break Viterbo’s full court pressure. Trailing 27-18, Valley City State took the next 11 straight points capped by a layup from Andranae Powns to take its first lead of the game at 29-27 with 5:46 on the clock. Viterbo finished the half on a 9-0 run to lead 45-38 at halftime.

Viterbo stepped up its defensive effort throughout the third quarter to hold a 16-point advantage at the buzzer. The Vikings held the V-Hawks to just 16 points in the fourth quarter but couldn’t make up the deficit, falling 83-69 to Viterbo.

Valley City State shot 41 percent from the field (28-68), 18 percent from beyond the arc (3-17), and 58 percent on free throws (10-17). Viterbo shot 47 percent from the field (28-60), 30 percent on three-pointers (6-20), and 84 percent on free throws (21-25).

Viterbo scored 26 points off of 18 Viking turnovers Saturday while Valley City State only converted 12 points off of 15 V-Hawk turnovers.

The V-Hawks had three players in double figure scoring, led by Kacie Gross who scored 19, Kaitlyn Kennedy who added 17, and Madison Lindauer with 13. Allie Wojtysiak grabbed a team-high seven rebounds for Viterbo.

VALLEY CITY (VCSU) – Viterbo’s Robert Cunitz made two free throws with 6.2 seconds remaining Saturday, clinching an 88-84 win over Valley City State in NSAA men’s basketball.

The Vikings cut a late 11-point deficit to just two points in the final minute, but Cunitz’s two free throws put the game away.

Valley City State drops to 11-3 overall and 3-2 in the North Star Athletic Association. Viterbo University improves to 5-5 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

A disciplined Viterbo team took care of the ball against VCSU’s pressure defense, which had been forcing just over 20 turnovers per game this season. The V-Hawks turned it over just 13 times on Saturday, including only three turnovers in the first half.

A back-and-forth first half featured three ties and 10 lead changes. The Vikings held a slim 46-44 lead at the break, thanks in part to a 10-for-15 first half from 3-point range.

With the game tied 59-59 at the 14:10 mark of the second half, Viterbo started its game-changing run. The V-Hawks went on an 18-4 run over the next five minutes of play, opening up a 77-63 lead on two free throws from Spencer Speltz with 9:20 remaining.

The teams traded buckets before VCSU started its comeback, trailing 84-73 with 2:50 to go. Joshua Kelly made back-to-back driving layups to jumpstart the run, and Connor Entzi followed with a 3-pointer that made it 84-80 with 1:37 to play. Viterbo’s Noah Fredrickson pushed the lead back to 86-80 with a shot inside.

VCSU’s final-minute effort trimmed the deficit to just two points as Chris Thompson made two free throws and Kevin Schramm scored inside to make it 86-84. VCSU nearly forced a turnover but then had to foul, and Cunitz sank the two free throws to clinch the game.

Four Vikings scored in double figures, led by 15 points and nine rebounds from Kevin Schramm. Entzi and Jalen Addison each scored 13 points, and Thompson added 11.

Fredrickson made six 3’s for Viterbo as he finished with a game-high 24 points. Cunitz added 22 points and Jack Monis chipped in 19.

The Vikings shot 51 percent overall (30-59), 54 percent on 3’s (14-26) and 67 percent at the line (10-15). Viterbo finished at 57 percent overall (31-54), 50 percent on 3’s (11-22) and 83 percent on free throws (15-18).

Up next: Valley City State travels to Mayville State on Jan. 22 and Presentation College on Jan. 23. Viterbo hosts Bellevue on Jan. 22.

Sunday UJ D-1 Hockey

MINOT, N.D. (UJ)— The University of Jamestown hockey team secured a weekend series sweep of Minot State Sunday, defeating the Beavers 3-2 in a shootout at MAYSA Arena.

The Jimmies completed the first home-and-home series sweep against Minot State in the rivarly’s history. UJ defeated the Beavers 3-1 on Saturday in Jamestown.

Jamestown led 2-0 heading into the third period after Jake Huculak (FR/Jasper, Alberta)’s first-period goal and Gage Thompson (SO/Valley City, N.D.)’s second-period score.

Minot State turned up the offensive pressure in the third period, peppering Jimmie goaltender Tyson Brouwer (SR/Lethbridge, Alberta) with shot after shot.

The Beavers pulled their goalie for an extra attacker and got on the board with 1:31 left to make it 2-1. Still playing with the extra attacker, Minot State got the tying goal just 15 seconds later.

Following a scoreless 3-on-3 overtime period, the game headed to a shootout.

Marquez Ginger (FR/Augusta, Ga.) scored on his attempt to put UJ ahead 1-0. Brouwer denied the first Beaver attempt, and Reid Wilson (FR/Castlegar, British Columbia) was stopped on the second UJ try. Brouwer came up big again on Minot’s second shot, and a successful try by Jordon Kromm (FR/Calgary, Alberta) would give Jamestown the win.

Kromm, who was the hero in last night’s victory with a hat trick, beat Beaver goalie Chad Duran for the shootout clincher and the game-winning goal.

Brouwer had 43 saves for Jamestown in his 130th career game, tying the ACHA record for games played by a goaltender.

Jamestown is back in action January 29-30 at Waldorf (Iowa) University.

UNDATED (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs have moved on in the NFL playoffs after a 22-17 victory over the Cleveland Browns. And they closed out the win despite losing quarterback Patrick Mahomes in the third quarter to a concussion.

Backup Chad Henne (HEN’-ee), who is 35 years old, helped ice the game with a long third-down scramble and then a daring fourth-down completion to Tyreek Hill with just over a minute left.

The Chiefs say Mahomes is doing great. Referring to Henne, Mahomes tweeted after the game “HenneThingIsPossible.”

The Chiefs now head to their third straight AFC title game and will face the Buffalo Bills next Sunday.

— Tom Brady’s best game in three tries against New Orleans has the Buccaneers moving on in the NFL playoffs and Saints quarterback Drew Brees headed home — perhaps for good. Brady and the Bucs’ offense turned three of the Saints’ four turnovers, which included three Brees interceptions, into touchdowns, and Tampa Bay beat New Orleans 30-20 in the divisional round of the NFL playoffs. Two touchdowns came on short passes to Mike Evans and Leonard Fournette. Brady also scored on a 1-yard run. The Bucs advanced to the NFC championship game in Green Bay.

Los Angeles Chargers hiring Brandon Staley as head coach

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) — The Los Angeles Chargers have hired Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to become the team’s head coach. The Chargers made the decision Sunday after having a second interview with Staley. The interview was held a day after the Rams were eliminated from the playoffs with a 32-18 loss to the Green Bay Packers. The 38-year old Staley was in demand with interviews also scheduled with the Houston Texans and Philadelphia Eagles. Staley has been an NFL assistant for only four years. He joined the Rams this past season after being a linebackers coach with the Chicago Bears and Denver Broncos.

UNDATED (AP) — Julius Randle scored 20 points with 12 rebounds and RJ Barrett had 19 and 11 to help the New York Knicks snap a five-game losing streak and beat the Boston Celtics 105-75.

Jaylen Brown scored 25 for Boston, which had the best record in the Eastern Conference after winning five in a row but suffered its biggest blowout and lowest-scoring output of the season.

All-Star Kemba Walker made his season debut after missing the first 11 games with a left knee injury but left in the third quarter with a rib injury. Fellow Celtics All-Star Jayson Tatum missed his second straight game with COVID-19.

The Knicks led by as many as 11 in the first quarter and made it 15 in the second before scoring the first 10 points in the third quarter to open a 58-35 lead. The Celtics never got closer than 18 after that.

— Marcus Morris Sr. scored a season-high 20 points to lead seven players in double figures, and the Los Angeles Clippers defeated the Indiana Pacers 129-96 for their first four-game winning streak of the season. Paul George and Luke Kennard also scored 20 points each. Doug McDermott led the Pacers with 23 points, making five 3-pointers. Domantas Sabonis added 19 points and 14 rebounds. Indiana closed within two points early in the third before the Clippers ran away. They outscored the Pacers 37-14 the rest of the quarter to lead 100-75 going into the fourth.

— Zion Williamson had 31 points and six rebounds, Steven Adams made a pair of clutch free throws with 17.9 seconds remaining, and the New Orleans Pelicans overcame a 43-point performance by Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox and beat the Kings 128-123. Brandon Ingram scored 22 points, Eric Bledsoe added 21 and Adams had 12 points and 15 rebounds to help the Pelicans end a five-game losing streak. Fox had a career-high point total and added 13 assists for the Kings, who have lost eight of 10.

— Reserve Jordan Clarkson scored 23 points, Donovan Mitchell added 18 and the Utah Jazz beat the Nuggets 109-105 in a rematch of their thrilling first-round playoff series last season that Denver captured in seven games. Rudy Gobert finished with 15 points and 13 rebounds in a game in which Mitchell struggled with his shot, going 7 of 20 from the field. But Mitchell hit a clutch fadeaway with 1:01 remaining and with Denver staging a late rally. Nikola Jokic finished with 35 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists, while Jamal Murray chipped in 30 for the Nuggets.

— Lauri Markkanen had 29 points and 10 rebounds, and Garrett Temple scored 15 of his season-high 21 points in the second quarter to help Chicago end a four-game losing streak. Dallas star Luka Doncic passed Michael Jordan on the career list with his 29th triple-double, finishing with 36 points, 16 rebounds and 15 assists, including a behind-the-back pass to Willie Cauley-Stein for a dunk. Doncic is tied with Grant Hill for 15th place.

— The Oklahoma City Thunder’s scheduled home game Sunday night against the Philadelphia 76ers was postponed. Because of ongoing contact tracing within the 76ers, the NBA said the team does not have the league-required eight available players to proceed with the game.

76ers-Thunder called off as virus concerns still trouble NBA

UNDATED (AP) — Another NBA game was called off Sunday because of coronavirus concerns, and the Memphis Grizzlies said center Jonas Valanciunas (YOH’-nuhs val-uhn-CHOO’-nuhs) will not play Monday because of the league’s health and safety protocols.

The NBA said the Philadelphia at Oklahoma City game, scheduled for Sunday night, could not be played because the 76ers did not “have the league-required eight available players to proceed” because of contact tracing.

It was the 13th game called off since Jan. 10 because of virus issues, a span in which the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association have stiffened protocols and even added testing with hopes of keeping the season going without much in the way of additional problems.

UNDATED (AP) — Jake Guentzel (GENT’-sul) beat Ilya Samsonov in the fourth round of a shootout and the Pittsburgh Penguins picked up their first win of the season with a 4-3 victory over Washington.

Casey DeSmith stopped 20 shots in regulation then turned aside T.J. Oshie, Nicklas Backstrom, Evgeny Kuznetsov (kooz-NET’-sahv) and Alex Ovechkin (oh-VECH’-kin) in the shootout as the Penguins avoided their first 0-3 start since 2015-16. Evan Rodrigues, Colton Sceviour (SEE’-vee-ur) and Marcus Pettersson all scored their first goals of the season for Pittsburgh.

Ovechkin got his 707th career goal to move within one of Hall of Famer Mike Gartner for seventh on the all-time list.

— Keith Yandle got his 100th career goal, Chris Driedger made 23 saves and the Florida Panthers beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-2. Eetu Luostarinen scored his first NHL goal, and Aaron Ekblad, Patric Hornqvist, and Jonathan Huberdeau also scored for Florida, which had three goals in the third period to pull away in its delayed opener. EVANSTON, Ill. (AP) — Luka Garza had 17 points and 10 rebounds in just 24 minutes as No. 5 Iowa rolled to a 96-73 victory over Northwestern.

Joe Wieskamp had 16 points and CJ Fredrick added 13 as the Hawkeyes won their fifth straight. Iowa and Michigan are tied for the conference lead.

Garza, who entered averaging 27.6 points, sat out the final 12 minutes because of the lopsided score. He was 7 for 12 from the field and scored all of his points in the first half.

Pete Nance had 16 points and Boo Buie added 12 for Northwestern, which dropped its fifth in a row.

Virginia Tech won despite committing 15 turnovers while having quiet days from top scorers Keve Aluma and Jalen Cone. But the Hokies still improved to 5-1 in the ACC for the first time since 2007. Ismael Massoud scored 12 points for Wake Forest, which was playing a fourth straight game against a ranked league opponent.
