Jamestown  (CVHD)  The anticipated COVID community testing schedule for the Jan 25-29 in Jamestown is:

  • 11am to noon
  • Monday Jan 25 – Friday Jan 29
  • Jamestown Civic Center

Rapid (antigen) testing will be conducted on all participants upon entry. For those who test negative on the rapid test, a confirmatory PCR test will be available if you choose to do so. Pre-registration is required prior to entry at https://testreg.nd.gov if you have not registered in the past.

Please note the time change from previous testing . . .  this week it is 11am to noon.

Central Valley Health has established an interest survey that collects names of those interested in
COVID vaccine and also determines which priority group they are eligible for.

The survey is available on the CVHD website at www.centralvalleyhealth.org  . To date, CVHD has collected over 900 responses of those interested in the COVID vaccine from Stutsman and Logan
Counties. Of those 900 interested, over 350 are over the age of 75.

Once the vaccine arrives, CVHD will begin calling those on the list in order of signing up on the
interest survey while following the priority group guidance. Participants will then be invited to
make an appointment at a vaccination clinic. Appointments at the vaccination clinics will be
required to enter the facility. Locations of the vaccinations may change depending on availability of the facility and those wishing to be vaccinated will be notified of the location.

CVHD began administering the second doses of the Moderna vaccine to priority group Phase 1A
last week, which includes frontline healthcare workers, first responders, and long-term care
residents and staff. “Those who received vaccine the week of December 22 were due for the
second dose last week,” says Iszler. Moderna vaccine requires a second dose, due 28 days after
the first dose. This week CVHD anticipates the arrival of the Pfizer vaccine for second doses for
those vaccinated in Phase 1A. Pfizer vaccine second does are due 21 days following the first
dose.

Iszler says they are expecting to be very busy vaccinating next week. “We have a lot to
coordinate in the next week as we have both types of vaccine coming for first and second doses,”
She says  CVHD will be receiving 300 doses of Moderna vaccine the week of January 25 for
first doses for those in priority group Phase 1B, specifically those 75 and older. “In addition to
the second dose clinics, we will also be working to coordinate a first dose vaccination clinic for
those in Phase 1B. We are very excited to offer vaccinations to those are have been waiting,” expresses Iszler.

Jamestown  (CSi) Jamestown author Nancy Kuykendall has published her fifth book, “God Is Not Silent.”

On Friday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Nancy said the idea for writing the book stems from the fact that, “Throughout my life God has made himself known to me. He has rejoiced with me and over me when I’ve been at my best, and comforted, cared for, and instructed me when at my worst. He will

engage with us in our need and in our joy. If we seek Him we will find him.”

Nancy said, “GOD IS NOT SILENT contains thirteen chapters of my personal stories of when God has engaged with me from age twelve forward. They may be similar to some of your own stories, or maybe you need to hear that God cares and does interact with us. He longs for us to know Him. God is not silent!”

Nancy said, I am happy to announce GOD IS NOT SILENT-One woman’s encounters with God, is live and available for purchase. It’s available in both kindle ebook and paperback format on Amazon. It will soon be found on Goodreads,

christianbookclub.net, and her web site.

She added that the 124 page book will be available later at Dakota Store in Downtown Jamestown.

Also on our show Nancy pointed out that she’s currently wriing her sixth book, her first entry in to a fictional novel, likely to be the first of a three part series.

Jamestown (JRMC) Supporters of the annual Tree of Love event helped Jamestown Regional Medical Center’s littlest patients and their families.

More than 100 supporters raised $7,170 to purchase a pregnancy app for moms and babies. The app supports mothers through pregnancy and the first years of a child’s life. JRMC Family BirthPlace welcomes about 350 babies each year.

Emily Woodley, JRMC Family BirthPlace manager, says, “The new technology will connect parents to valuable, interactive content that is available anytime – from any device. The accessibility helps provide the best care to welcome our littlest patients.”

The technology cost is $6,000. The platform offers medically-accurate content that can also be customized to create a unique patient experience. Text, videos and animations are available on pregnancy, labor and birth, postpartum care, breastfeeding and newborn care.

The JRMC Auxiliary started the beloved Tree of Love tradition 23 years ago,  JRMC Foundation Director Lisa Jackson, adds, ” Today, attendees hang ornaments in honor or in memory of beloved family members, friends or caregivers.  Tree of Love is truly one of my favorite moments each year. During this challenging time, we are grateful to the community for joining us.  These ornaments remind us why we are so dedicated to our work. These gifts continue the tradition of legendary care.”

In addition to an app for babies and families, a portion of Tree of Love proceeds also supported the JRMC Cancer Center. In its first year, the cancer center saved more than 244,000 miles of travel.

Bismarck, N.D. (AP) — Far-right members of the North Dakota Legislature are taking another shot at easing restrictions on citizens’ right to use deadly force in self-defense. The bill would allow someone to use deadly force without retreating in certain circumstances. The proposal to remove the so-called “duty to retreat” provision is the latest attempt by far-right lawmakers to modify the state’s “castle law.” According to the National Conference of State Legislatures, at least 25 states have laws saying there is no duty to retreat before using deadly force against an attacker.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A resolution pending in the Legislature says North Dakota voters should decide whether to allow gambling on college and professional sports. The resolution is proposed by West Fargo Republican Rep. Michael Howe, and has wide bipartisan support. It comes after a pair of bills that would have allowed sports betting in the state were defeated two years ago in North Dakota’s Republican-led Legislature. The Legislature, however, would still be required to endorse the resolution by an up or down vote. Residents also could put the matter to a vote themselves with an initiated measure.

UJ Basketball

Women…

Jamestown  (UJ) All five starters reached double figures for the University of Jamestown women’s basketball team Saturday, as the Jimmies cruised to a 90-47 victory over Mount Marty (S.D.) University at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown won for the third straight outing, improving their record to 12-6 overall and 9-6 in the GPAC. Mount Marty falls to 4-15 overall and 2-14 in the conference.

The Lancers took a quick 2-0 lead after a pair of free throws 12 seconds into the contest, but an Audrey Rodakowski (FR/Dickinson, ND) bucket and Noelle Josephson (JR/Ramsey, MN) three-pointer put UJ ahead 5-2 and the Jimmies never looked back.

Jamestown led 12-2 early on and 20-10 after the first quarter. Mount Marty made just three of its 14 shots in the opening quarter and missed all four of its three-point attempts.

A big second quarter by the Jimmies stretched the lead to 24 at the break. The Lancers got within 17 points at the 5:12 mark of the second quarter, only to see UJ close out the quarter on a 12-5 run. Jamestown’s defense surrendered just four made baskets, three of which came from beyond the arc, and did not allow Mount Marty a trip to the foul line.

Jamestown continued their offensive onslaught in the third, outscoring the Lancers 28-9. Hannah DeMars (SO/Grand Rapids, MN), held scoreless in the first half, scored 11 straight points for the Jimmies in a span of 3:39, helping extend the lead to 60-28. A three-point play by Correy Hickman (SR/Morris, MN) gave UJ its first 40-point lead of the contest, and Kia Tower (SO/Bigfork, MN) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a 43-point edge going to the fourth.

Fourteen of the Jimmies’ final 17 points came from the bench, led by Courtney Lloyd (JR/Valley City, ND) and McKenna Becher (FR/West Fargo, ND) with seven each. UJ’s 90 points tied a season high.

Tower led Jamestown with 16 points while Josephson (14 points, 10 rebounds) and Rodakowski (13 points, 14 rebounds) both posted double-doubles. DeMars and Emma Stoehr (SR/Woodbury, MN) added 11 points each. Hickman finished with a season-high nine points, and Lloyd and Becher also recorded season highs.

Next up for the Jimmies is a home game Monday against College of Saint Mary (Neb.) set to tipoff at 12 p.m.

Men…

Jamestown (UJ) A 25-10 run to open the second half provided some breathing room for the University of Jamestown men’s basketball team, and the Jimmies went on to a 93-66 win over Mount Marty (S.D.) University Saturday at Harold Newman Arena.

Jamestown moves to 14-5 overall and 10-4 in the GPAC. Mount Marty drops to 7-14 overall and 4-12 in the conference.

The first half was a highly contested battle, with the Jimmies leading by as many as seven before the Lancers went ahead by two.

Elijah Pappas converted a three-point play with 8:36 in the first to give Mount Marty a 24-23 lead. On UJ’s next possession, Allante’ Pickens (SR/Chicago, IL) drained a three-pointer to put Jamestown ahead by two, and the Jimmies never looked back.

Will Cordes (FR/Shakopee, MN) opened the second half with a three-pointer stretching the lead to nine, and another Cordes three with two more from Jack Talley (SR/Sioux Falls, SD) were part of a 14-4 run that quickly made it 55-39.

Mount Marty got as close as 16 one more time in the game, but threes from Cordes and Pickens along with a Cole Woodford (FR/Redwood Falls, MN) bucket helped the lead grow to 23. Jamestown’s largest advantage of the day came after a Mason Walters (SO/Jamestown, ND) three-pointer made it 82-54 with 4:47 remaining.

The Jimmies shot 16-of-31 in the second half while holding Mount Marty to 8-of-34 shooting in the same span. Both teams went 12-of-17 at the foul line, and UJ made 8 of 14 three-pointers to the Lancers’ three of 14.

Cordes led Jamestown with 19 points and sank five three-pointers. Pickens had 18 off the bench, including four threes. Talley finished with 14 and seven rebounds, while Walters and Brock Schrom (SR/Grand Rapids, MN) were also in double figures with 11 each. Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are NFC champions following a 31-26 win at Green Bay. Their next opponent is the defending-champion Kansas City Chiefs, who earned a 38-24 win over Buffalo in the AFC championship game. The game will be held on Feb. 7 in Tampa.

Brady overcame interceptions on three straight drives by throwing for 280 yards and three touchdowns in reaching the Super Bowl for the 10th time in his career.

Scotty Miller grabbed a 39-yard scoring strike with just one second left in the first half, putting the Bucs ahead 21-10. Brady struck again 66 seconds into the third quarter, hitting Cameron Brate for an eight-yard TD that made it 28-10

The Bucs earned their franchise-record eighth consecutive road victory to reach the Super Bowl for the first time since their 2002 championship season. After winning three straight playoff games on the road, Tampa Bay will become the first team to play a Super Bowl in its own stadium.

Green Bay trailed 31-23 and had first-and-goal from the 8 in the last few minutes. But after Aaron Rodgers threw three straight incompletions, the Packers settled for Mason Crosby’s 26-yard field goal with 2:05 left despite owning all three of its timeouts.

Rodgers fell to 1-4 in conference championship games as a starting quarterback. He was 33 of 48 for 346 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

The Chiefs will make consecutive Super Bowl appearances after going 50 years without one. Patrick Mahomes (mah-HOHMZ’) threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns, with most of it to favorite targets Travis Kelce (KEHL’-see) and Tyreek Hill.

Kelce finished with 13 catches for 118 yards and two touchdowns, and Hill added nine catches for 172 yards. They became the first duo in NFL history with consecutive games of at least 100 yards receiving each in a single postseason.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire and Darrel Williams added short TD runs for Kansas City.

Josh Allen finished with 287 yards passing, two touchdowns and an interception, but a big chunk of his numbers came as the Bills tried to rally from a 38-15 deficit in the final minutes.

The Chiefs actually spotted the Bills a 9-0 lead, thanks in large part to Mecole Hardman’s muffed punt inside their 5 that gifted Buffalo a touchdown.

MLB-YANKEES-PIRATES TRADE

Yankees get Taillon from Pirates

NEW YORK (AP) — The Yankees have made a second offseason addition to their starting rotation, acquiring right-hander Jameson Taillon (TY’-ahn) from the Pirates for four prospects.

The 29-year-old Taillon hasn’t pitched since May 2019 following his second Tommy John surgery. He is 29-24 with a 3.67 ERA over four major league seasons.

Taillon joins a rotation headed by Gerrit Cole and is projected to include Deivi García, Jordan Montgomery and Corey Kluber, who has a pending $11 million, one-year contract subject to a successful physical. In addition, Luis Severino is expected to return from Tommy John surgery last Feb. 27 and Domingo Germán is expected back from a domestic violence suspension that caused him to miss last season.

This deal makes it less likely the Yankees will re-sign Masahiro Tanaka, who became a free agent.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The House is set to bring the impeachment article against Donald Trump for the Senate trial. But a growing number of Republican senators say they oppose the proceedings against the former president. That’s a sign of the dimming chances that Trump will be convicted on the charge that he incited a siege of the U.S. Capitol. House Democrats who are prosecuting the case will walk the charge of “incitement of insurrection” to the Senate on Monday evening. But GOP passions appear to have cooled since the insurrection. And Republican senators who will serve as jurors in the trial are rallying to his legal defense. The trial is set to begin in two weeks.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Top aides to President Joe Biden have begun talks with a group of moderate Senate Republicans and Democrats on Biden’s proposed $1.9 trillion coronavirus relief package. The talks come as Biden faces increasing headwinds in his effort to win bipartisan backing for the initial legislative effort of his presidency. Lawmakers on the right question the wisdom of racking up bigger deficits. Those on the left are urging Biden not to spend too much time on bipartisanship when the pandemic is killing thousands each day and costing more jobs. One key Republican, Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, said afterward she would reconvene a bipartisan group to focus on “a more targeted package.”

TACOMA, Wash. (AP) — Protesters have set a large fire, damaged buildings and marched with signs in response to a police car driving through a crowd in Tacoma, Washington. The demonstrators gathered Sunday evening near the intersection where at least two people were hurt on Saturday. Police say the officer had responded to a call about street racers when people in the crowd began hitting the police vehicle. Video widely shared online shows the car plowing through the crowd of pedestrians, hitting at least one person. Police say the officer has been placed on administrative leave. Protesters told news outlets Sunday that they want the officer to be fired.

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese officials say rescuers have found the bodies of nine workers killed in explosions at a gold mine, raising the death toll to 10. Eleven others were rescued on Sunday after being trapped for two weeks, and one person is still missing at the mine in Shandong province. The cause of the accident at the mine, which was under construction, is under investigation. The explosions on Jan. 10 released large amounts of debris that blocked a shaft, disabling elevators and trapping workers underground. An official says search efforts will continue for the remaining miner until he is found.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said he has tested positive for COVID-19, making the announcement as his country registers the highest levels of infections and deaths to date. López Obrador, who has been criticized for his handling of Mexico’s pandemic and for not setting an example of prevention in public, said Sunday on his official Twitter account that his symptoms are mild and he is under medical treatment. “I regret to inform you that I am infected with COVID-19,” he tweeted. José Luis Alomía Zegarra, Mexico’s director of epidemiology, said the 67-year-old had a “light” case of COVID-19 and was “isolating at home.”
