Jamestown  ( Central Valley Health)  CVHD Anticipates to Provide Over 700 Vaccinations this week.
This week, Central Valley Health District (CVHD) received a large number of COVID-19
vaccine doses and began providing vaccinations in the community on Tuesday. Unit Adminstrator, Robin Iszler says, “We have scheduled several vaccination clinics this week.”
CVHD has been using a list based from the online Vaccine Interest Survey to contact those
interested in being vaccinated. CVHD has completed contacting those on the list who are 75 and
older and are now into the list of those 65-75 with underlying health conditions.
In past weeks, CVHD was contacting interested community members who were 75 and older by
phone call and they will now be shifting vaccination appointment efforts to online registration.
Robin adds, “It will be much more efficient use of time if people now register themselves for appointments and clinics when they are available.” The online registration system, called PrepMod, also has the ability to send out reminders and registration links when it is time for the second dose.
As CVHD is shifting into the next priority group, including those 65-74 with 2 or more
underlying health conditions, they have provided a link via email to those who were on the list
for the clinics planned for Wednesday and Thursday this week.  Robin says, “We want to public to know we
will no longer call them, we will email links for those on the current list.”
At this time, the online Vaccine Interest Survey has been closed. Moving forward, the new
online registration will be used now to sign those up interested for vaccinations when vaccine is
available. CVHD will be announcing when those registration links are available. CVHD
anticipates that more vaccine will continue to arrive weekly for vaccination clinics and those
eligible will be able to register for an appointment.  She says “We want to establish more of a routine
schedule so that the public knows and can plan for vaccinations. Up until now the vaccine has
been limited, but more vaccine is being allocated to North Dakota and that is helping us move
through the priority groups more quickly.”
For the most up-to-date information on upcoming vaccination clinics, follow Central Valley
Health District on Facebook or monitor the website at www.centralvalleyhealth.org.

Valley City  (CSi)  Valley City Police continue their investigation into thefts.

Police Chief Phil Hatcher reports, the theft of an undisclosed sum of cash from the Valley City Town and Country Club on Wednesday, February 3rd.

On Monday this week,  a number of  tools were taken from a motor vehicle in the 300 Block of Valley Drive. Also reported was a backpack taken from a vehicle in the 800 Block of 11th Street. NW in Valley City.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The Jamestown/Stutsman Development Corporation (JSDC) has plans to meet in person for the Annual Meeting, possibly in late May this year, depending on the status of the COVID-19 pandemic.

On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, JSDC Business Development Director, Corry Shevlin said, if an in person meeting is not possible, it will be held virtually.  Later this year, other JSDC meetings may be held in person as well, again, based on the COVID-19 pandemic conditions.

In other business, Corry said the JSDC Board approved an Flex Pace request by Advantage Propertied, doing business as Advantage Electric.   He said the business’ plans include demolition and construction of a new building. The request approval now goes to the City of Jamestown and Stutsman County for approval.

The JSDC Board also heard a report from Jamestown Tourism Director, Searle Swedlund, as the board reviewed tourism’s Grant Program, as Searle said Tourism continues to hear and make grant requests this year.

Jamestown  (Chamber) Members of the Jamestown Area Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Committee and the Young Professionals of Jamestown presented the Customer Service Award for January to Danelle Roen for her outstanding customer service.  The chamber honors individuals who demonstrate a consistent commitment to delivering products or services that satisfy customers by exceeding their requirements or expectations.

Her nomination said, “My mom has hired Danelle on several occasions over the last few years and has always beamed at the professional job Danelle and her crew does. Earlier this year, Danelle volunteered her time in doing yard work for numerous citizens in the community, those citizens who needed a little pick me up or were in need of a little extra help. My mother has some health conditions and has been quarantined since March, so Danelle took care of her Spring yard clean up just because she could. To pick up those who could use a little extra sunshine in their day, is just plain award worthy.”

Congratulations to Danelle. Customer Service Award nomination forms are available at the Chamber office and on their website at www.jamestownchamber.com or call 701-252-4830.

Jamestown (CSi)   Organizers of the Annual Runnin O’ The Green report the 42nd running has been tentatively scheduled for April 17, 2021.

When the running was cancelled in 2020 due to health concerns with the COVID-19 pandemic,  a committee was formed to reset the running for 2021, saying, “The longtime event has raised thousands of dollars for Elks Camp Grassick and local cancer patients in the last 41 years. The committee encourages participants to follow their Facebook page for further updates on registration, guidelines, and more.  The pandemic is still here and with hopes of scheduling at a later date won’t jeopardize any decision making to postpone or cancel as we did in 2020.  The health & safety for all is first priority.”

Valley City  (VCSU) – Valley City State University has set spring enrollment records for the sixth consecutive year, according to official spring term 2021 numbers released Tuesday by the university.

VCSU reports a total headcount of 1,632 students this spring, including 1,501 undergraduates and 131 graduate students. Both the total headcount and undergraduate headcount are spring enrollment records, surpassing the previous highs of 1,622 and 1,491 set last year.

The full-time equivalent (FTE) of 1,119 students announced Tuesday is also a new record for the spring.

“This is absolutely tremendous news,” said VCSU President Alan LaFave. “Our entire campus community has played a role in achieving this milestone. We are very excited that students, together with their families, continue to trust Valley City State University for their education. This is validation for the work our campus continues to do in providing an outstanding college experience.”

Over the past decade, VCSU’s total headcount in the spring semester has increased by 25 percent, growing from 1,306 students in 2012 to 1,632 students this spring. Likewise, VCSU has set fall enrollment records for the past six years.

Valley City State University has been named a U.S. News and World Report “Best College” for 23 consecutive years. In the latest analysis, VCSU was ranked the No. 4 public regional college in the Midwest.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge agreed to push back a hearing about whether the Dakota Access oil pipeline should be allowed to continue operating without a key permit while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducts an environmental review on the project. The Corps filed a motion Monday to postpone the Wednesday hearing in order to allow Biden administration officials more time to familiarize themselves with the case. The Standing Rock Sioux Reservation filed a lawsuit in 2016 in an attempt to stop construction of the pipeline, which began operating in 2017. U.S. District Judge James Boasberg reset the hearing for April 9. Neither the tribes nor Texas-based Energy Transfer, which owns the pipeline, objected to the delay.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A North Dakota legislative panel has refused to endorse legislation to raise the state’s cigarette tax. The bipartisan bill seeks to raise the tax on cigarettes from 44 cents to $1 a pack. The House Finance and Taxation Committee gave a “do-not-pass” recommendation to the bill Tuesday. Backers of the legislation believe raising the tax will discourage tobacco use and lower health care costs. Opponents have successfully fought off several attempts to raise the state’s tobacco tax since it was last levied in 1993. They argue it punishes retailers and unfairly targets low-income North Dakotans.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Bismarck Public Schools has updated an existing tolerance policy after a student asked for the Confederate flag to be banned. Marianna Miller, a 16-year-old Black student, earlier told school board members that the flag should be banned because it causes distractions to the learning environment and makes some people feel uncomfortable. Miller cited a recent incident in which a white student wearing a piece of clothing with the Confederate flag was confronted by another white student. The amended policy allows teachers and staff to be more proactive in prohibiting items that can be disruptive, including clothing, symbols and messages that promote intolerance or hate.

WASHBURN, N.D. (AP) — Two men accused in a construction fraud scheme in McLean County have each been sentenced to 15 months in prison and have paid more than $700,000 in restitution. Fifty-six-year-old Bartley Gorman Jr. and 27-year-old Sean Gorman, both of Minot, pleaded guilty to criminal charges, including exploitation of a vulnerable adult and construction fraud. An affidavit filed in McLean County says the two men “victimized elderly or vulnerable people using residential construction fraud.” A court affidavit says the two men are part of a crime ring known as Travelers, Irish Travelers and several other names and concentrated their efforts on construction scams in the rural areas of oil-producing North Dakota counties.

LAKE HATTIE TOWNSHIP, Minn. (AP) — Co-workers were able to save a man after the logging machine he was operating broke through some ice at a remote site in northern Minnesota. The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office says Roy Davis was trapped inside the cab of the machine as it flooded with water from a swamp in Lake Hattie Township Saturday. Davis was unable to get out of the cab because mud and ice blocked his way. A co-worker used an excavator to dig around the machine to free him. He was taken by air to a hospital and treated for hypothermia.

KOBE BRYANT CRASH

Feds blame pilot in Kobe Bryant crash

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Pilot error has been determined to be the cause of a helicopter crash that killed Kobe Bryant and eight others last year.

The National Transportation Safety Board said poor visibility because of thick fog north of Los Angeles probably led pilot Ara Zobayan to become disoriented. The NTSB said Zobayan thought he was climbing when the craft was plunging toward a Southern California hillside.

Zobayan frequently flew Bryant. Investigators say he ignored his training and violated federal regulations.

Philadelphia’s upcoming games against New Jersey and Washington’s at Buffalo scheduled for Thursday and Saturday were already postponed because of breakouts on the Devils and Sabres.

— Blue Jackets center Mikko Koivu (MEE’-koh KOY’-voo) has decided to retire in the midst of his 16th NHL season, saying he couldn’t elevate his level of play. He spent the first 10 days of the season on the COVID-19 list and then had a goal and an assist in seven games with the Blue Jackets.

Former coach Marty Schottenheimer dead at 77

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The longtime NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer has died at 77.

Family friend and former Kansas City Chiefs publicist Bob Moore says Schottenheimer died Monday night in Charlotte, North Carolina. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2014 and was moved to a hospice Jan. 30.

Schottenheimer won 200 regular-season games with four NFL teams thanks to his “Martyball” brand of smash-mouth football but fell short in the playoffs. He was the eighth-winningest coach in NFL history. He coached for 21 seasons with Cleveland, Kansas City, Washington and San Diego.

UNDATED (AP) — Free agent right-hander Chris Archer has finalized a one-year, $6.5 million contract that reunites him with the Tampa Bay Rays.

The 32-year-old Archer missed all of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season after surgery to relieve symptoms of neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome last June. The two-time AL All-Star is 60-80 with a 3.86 ERA in 212 appearances, including 210 starts.

Elsewhere in the majors:

Hamilton tests positive, pulls out of Pro-Am

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Ryder Cup captain Padraig Harrington has withdrawn from the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am after testing positive for the coronavirus.

The Irishman is the fifth player this year in six PGA Tour events who had to withdraw because of a positive test. That includes Jim Herman, who tested positive in Florida and did not finish his self-isolation in time to travel to Maui for the Sentry Tournament of Champions.

Meanwhile, Dustin Johnson has pulled out of the Pebble Beach Pro-Am. His manager says Johnson felt he would be better served with a week of rest at home before going to Los Angeles for the Genesis Invitational and then a World Golf Championships event in Florida.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Opening arguments are set to begin in Donald Trump’s impeachment trial. An emotional first day ended Tuesday with the Senate voting to hear the case for convicting the former president of inciting the riot at the U.S. Capitol. On Wednesday, House Democrats prosecuting the case and the former president’s attorneys will lay out their opposing arguments before the senators, who are serving as jurors. The defense lost the vote seeking to halt the trial on constitutional grounds, 56-44. Trump fumed over his lawyers’ performance, and allies were questioning the defense strategy. A highlight of the prosecution case was a video mixing Trump’s remarks with the rioting.

WASHINGTON (AP) — House Democrats muscled past Republicans on major portions of President Joe Biden’s pandemic plan, including a proposed $130 billion in school relief and a gradual increase of the federal minimum wage to $15 an hour. Democrats on the Education and Labor Committee say schools won’t be able to reopen safely until they get an infusion of funding to repair ventilation systems, buy protective equipment and take other steps recommended by health officials. The panel met Tuesday to craft its portion of a $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package that tracks with Biden’s reopening plan. Republicans say they oppose the legislation.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Chicago Teachers Union has approved a deal with the nation’s third-largest school district to get students back to class during the coronavirus pandemic. The union’s roughly 25,000 members announced the vote early Wednesday, ending the possibility of a teacher lockout or strike. The agreement comes after months of negotiations and includes plans for more teacher vaccinations and metrics to allow school closures if COVID-19 infections spike. The first wave of students are due back Thursday. Other students in K-8 will return in the coming weeks for limited classroom instruction. No plans have been set for high school students to return. They will continue remote instruction.

BEIJING (AP) — Global stock prices and U.S. futures are higher after Wall Street broke a six-day winning streak. London and Frankfurt opened higher, while Shanghai, Tokyo and Hong Kong advanced. On Wall Street, the benchmark S&P 500 index ended down 0.1%. Investors were watching Washington, where President Joe Biden’s Democrats plan to move ahead without Republican help on a proposed $1.9 trillion economic aid package. It includes payments to Americans and a possible increase in the federal minimum wage. Global stocks have risen on optimism about possible U.S. stimulus and the rollout of coronavirus vaccines.

HOUSTON (AP) — Larger numbers of immigrant families have been crossing the U.S.-Mexico border in the first weeks of President Joe Biden’s administration. Warning signs are emerging of the border crises that marked former President Donald Trump’s term: Hundreds of newly released immigrants are getting dropped off with nonprofit groups and there are growing accounts of prolonged detention in short-term facilities. Measures to control the virus have sharply cut space in holding facilities that got overwhelmed during a surge of arrivals in 2018 and 2019. To deal with the new influx, the Border Patrol on Tuesday reopened a large tent facility in South Texas to house migrant families and children. Meanwhile, long-term facilities for kids who cross alone are 80% full.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden is making his first visit to the Pentagon as commander in chief. On Wednesday afternoon he’ll be taking stock of a military that is pivoting from the turmoil of the Trump years and focusing to an unusual degree on domestic and internal issues. Biden planned to meet with senior civilian and military officials. As defense leaders await direction on possible new approaches to overseas security threats, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin is calling the coronavirus pandemic a top priority. He also is ordering fresh assessments of how to root out sexual assault and extremism in the military’s ranks.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Saudi state TV says that Yemen’s Houthi rebels have targeted Abha International Airport in southwestern Saudi Arabia, causing a civilian plane on the tarmac to catch fire. The state-owned Al-Ekhbariya TV reported on Wednesday that firefighters have brought the blaze under control. There was no immediate word if there were any casualties. The Abha airport, close to the Yemeni border, has been repeatedly targeted in Houthi missile and drone attacks. There was also no information as to what type of weapon was used in the attack. It was the first time that a Yemen rebel attack reportedly damaged a civilian aircraft at the facility.

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) — Indonesian investigators say a malfunctioning automatic throttle may have caused the pilots of a Sriwijaya Air jet to lose control, resulting in the plane’s crash into the Java Sea last month. National Transportation Safety Committee investigators say they are still struggling to understand why the jet nosedived into the water minutes after taking off from Jakarta on Jan. 9, killing all 62 people on board. The investigators issued a preliminary report that provided new details of the pilots’ struggle to fly the plane from almost as soon as it became airborne. The lead investigator says the pilots of previous flights had reported problems with the automatic throttle system on the 26-year-old jet.

LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A Republican legislative leader in Michigan apologized after falsely claiming supporters of President Donald Trump were not involved in the deadly attack at the U.S. Capitol, having called it a “hoax.” Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey made the remarks last week while meeting with leaders of the Hillsdale County GOP, according to a video. The men spoke with Shirkey before censuring him, including for backing a ban on the open carry of guns into the Statehouse. The Jan. 6 siege of the Capitol stunned the world as Trump supporters ransacked the building to try to stop the certification of Joe Biden’s victory.

PARIS (AP) — France’s government wants to set the age of sexual consent at 15 and make it easier to punish long-ago child sexual abuse. The move comes amid growing public pressure and a wave of online testimonies about rape and other sexual violence by parents and authority figures. The justice minister says sexual penetration of anyone under 15 by an adult will be considered rape, but exceptions would be made for teenagers having consensual sex. The move would still need to be enshrined in law, but the announcement is a major step after years of efforts to toughen French protection for children victims of rape and sexual violence.
