A six-run second inning proved to be enough offense for the Jimmies in Friday’s opening win.

Down 2-0, Jamestown used a Katie Reisdorfer (JR/Fresno, Calif.) sacrifice fly, an RBI double by Sydney Prussia (JR/Detroit Lakes, Minn.), and a Comet throwing error to take a 3-2 lead. The Comets cut the lead to 6-4 with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Cota doubled home a run in the bottom of the third and Katie Merchant (SO/South Haven, Minn.) singled in another run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 8-4 Jimmies.

Mayville State added a run in the top of the seventh on a solo home run.

Grandview University def Jamestown

25-16,25-20,21-25,23-25,15-11

DES MOINES, Iowa  (UJ) — The seventh-ranked University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team took No. 1 Grand View University the distance Friday evening, falling in five sets 16-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23, 11-15.

The loss snapped UJ’s five-match winning streak as the Jimmies’ record now stands at 6-2.

The two teams battled it out early on in set one, with neither team getting more than a two-point lead. After a Clark Steele (JR/Lake Forest, Calif.) kill brought the Jimmies within a point at 15-14, Grand View scored nine straight to pull away.

A 3-0 run gave UJ a 12-9 lead in the second set, and the Jimmies would eventually go up 15-11 before the Vikings rallied. Jamestown’s last lead came at 19-18, and six straight Grand View points gave the home team a 24-19 edge. A Viking service error ended the run, but Grand View got the deciding kill to take a 2-0 match lead.

Trailing 12-10 in the third set, Jamestown scored nine of the next 11 points, getting kills from Tanner Woods (FR/Huntington Beach, Calif.), Austin Jacob (FR/Houston, Texas), Samuel Jackman (SO/St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba), Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.), and Derek Owens (FR/Andover, Minn.) to take a 19-14 lead. The lead grew to as many as seven before the Vikings got as close as 24-21, but a Jacob kill gave UJ the win.

Jamestown fell behind 9-7 in set four but scored the next three points to take a 10-7 lead. Grand View would tie the set at 16, but UJ would not trail for the remainder of the set. The Vikings mounted a rally to get within 24-23, but a Woods kill tied the match at 2.

Grand View scord six of the first nine points in the deciding set, and stretched the lead to 13-8. Jamestown scored the next two points to get within 13-10, but the Vikings took advantage of a Jimmie service error for match point. A kill by Woods gave UJ another chance to rally, but a Grand View kill closed out the match.

Jackman had 15 kills while Woods added 13. Derek Correa (FR/Vega Baja, Puerto Rico) passed out 36 assists. Braden Neumann (JR/Costa Mesa, Calif.) led the defense with nine digs, and Owens recorded four block assists.

Jamestown is back in action Saturday at the GPAC Classic in Sioux City, Iowa.
