FREMONT, Neb.   (UJ)   — Dru Fitz (SR/Gresham, OR) pitched a one-hit shutout with nine strikeouts in the opener and Brice Foster (SR/Lynnwood, WA) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the second game as the University of Jamestown baseball team swept Midland University 6-0 and 5-2 Friday afternoon.

Jamestown is now 16-10 overall and 3-3 in the GPAC while the Warriors drop to 11-14 overall and 1-5 in the conference.

The Jimmies are back in action Saturday with a doubleheader at Northwestern (Iowa) College beginning at 1 p.m.

UJ and Midland traded zeroes for the first five innings in game one before the Jimmies broke through with three runs in the top of the sixth. Matt Meraz (SR/Aurora, CO) doubled to score Blake Arritola (SO/Salem, OR). After Meraz was wild pitched to third, another wild pitch allowed Meraz to come home with UJ’s second run. A bases-loaded walk to Derek Almanza (JR/Bow, WA) forced in Brian Rice (JR/Vancouver, WA) for the third run of the inning.

With three runs to work with, Fitz retired Midland in order in the bottom of the sixth and the Jimmies came through with three more runs in the seventh. Rice’s two-out double scored Grant Okawa (SR/Mississauga, ON) and Chase Hacker (SR/Millcreek, WA), then Brice Foster drove in Rice with a single to left.

Fitz (4-0) pitched his second shutout of the season and lowered his earned run average to 2.31.

Meraz and Foster each had a pair of hits. Okawa and Kendall Yackley (SO/Lynnwood, WA) joined Rice with hits.

UJ took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth in game two as a Midland throwing errror allowed Brice Foster to score. Tanner Shepard (JR/Grand Rapids, MN) and Dylan Dudley (JR/Cottage Grove, OR) drove in runs as part of a three-run sixth inning and the Jimmies went ahead 4-0.

Midland came back with one run in the sixth, but Jamestown answered in the seventh on a Dirk Eymundson (SO/Parkland County, AB, Canada) single. The Warriors threatened in the bottom of the ninth, getting one run and loading the bases with only one out, but Aaron Pugh (SR/Boissevain, MB, Canada) retired the final two batters to earn his fifth save.

Kensaku Akiya (SR/Kawasaki, Japan) (2-2) allowed one run on two hits over five innings to get the win. He walked four and struck out three.

Tayler Cullen (JR/Santa Rosa, Calif.), Grant Okawa, Lincoln Trujillo (SR/Cheyenne, WY), Matt Meraz, and Shepard had hits. Foster doubled twice along with Cullen, Trujillo, and Shepard.
