Jamestown (UJ) The University of Jamestown men’s soccer team came back to tie the match from 2-0 and 3-2 deficits, but ultimately lost in overtime to NCAA Division III Concordia-Moorhead College Saturday afternoon at the Jimmie Turf Field.
The Cobbers had a 1-0 halftime lead on a goal by Michael Matthews in the 34th minute. Patrick Smith came rushing down the right wing and found Matthews streaking down the left side, executing a cross field aerial pass that gave Matthews an easy touch to put the ball in the net.
Matthews returned the favor in the 66th minute, setting up Rygg Sondre’s goal to make it 2-0.
Eric Fairtlough (SR/Varese, Italy) cut the lead in half with his 68th minute goal, and in the 76th minute, Aaron Pike (JR/Milton Keynes, England) headed in a perfect cross from a Max Gross (SO/Boeblingen, Germany) corner kick to draw UJ level.
In the 80th minute, Telvin Vah stepped in front of a Jimmie defender’s clearing attempt, blocking the pass and finding no opposition between him and the net, slotting home the Cobbers’ third of the match.
Hendrik Romahn (FR/Osterburg, Germany) and Karl Gatiramu (SO/Nairobi, Kenya) provided some heroics for the home team in the 84th minute, as Gatiramu’s through ball caught Romahn in stride, and he was able to knot the match at 3-3.
Just over four minutes into overtime, Brendan Koplin delivered the game-winner, capping off a combined seven-goal spree over the final 30 minutes of the match.
Shots were 13-12 in favor of Jamestown, with shots on goal 10-5 in favor of Concordia. The Cobber defense blocked four Jimmie shots and were helped out by a pair of UJ shots that hit off the crossbar.
Alex Hamer (JR/Solihull, England) had six saves for Jamestown while Noah Sahr made two saves for Concordia.
UJ will conclude the regular season Wednesday at Presentation (S.D.) College at 7 p.m.
