Jamestown CSi/CVHD   – Central Valley Health District, Unit Administrator, Robin Iszler has updated the number of COVID-19 vaccinations given so far in Stutsman County since, December of 2020.

On Tuesday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Robin said 8,822 vaccination have been administered, of which, 6,155 were Modena vaccines, 2,667 Pfizer vaccines, and 165 Johnson & Johnson vaccines, which have been temporarily suspended by the CDC while it investigates reports of blood clots in a small number of individuals receiving the J&J vaccine.

Including vaccinations given out at nursing homes, and local pharmacies, at total of 14,066 COVID-19 vaccinations have been given in Stutsman County.

She said in the county, 46-percent of the population has received at least on dose of the COVID-19 vaccination, adding that the goal in North Dakota is to have 70-percent vaccinated, under Herd Immunity to mitigate the spread of the virus.

She added that COVID-19 variants are reported to be more contagious, and have been reported in North Dakota.

She pointed out that State Health Department report of new positives in Stutsman County have spiked in Stutsman County.  She said traveling may have had an impact on the latest spike.

She said that, “Vaccination efforts continue throughout the community.  We continue to receive increased allocations of vaccine and we anticipates that anyone wanting to be vaccinated should be able to do so.”

CVHD encourages anyone wishing to receive a vaccination to sign up for the first available appointment offered to them.  CVHD currently has open vaccination appointments available and they are posted on their website at www.centralvalleyhealth.org.   Participants who cannot register themselves are encouraged to call CVHD at 252-8130 for assistance.

She added that CVHD will go to homes for those unable to go out to get vaccinations, and her offices is able to visit businesses, to issue vaccinations, by contacting CVHD.

She said that  CVHD is aware that some people might have hesitancy in receiving the COVID vaccination.  Some of the common questions/concerns regarding the vaccine that CVHD hears from the community includes:

  • Should I be vaccinated if I had COVID? Vaccination can offer protection from re-infection.  You can wait for 90 days following a positive COVID test if you would like. Vaccination can prevent you from transmitting the disease to others.
  • Are there serious risks to vaccinations? While very uncommon, anaphylactic reactions have occurred following the vaccination, which is why is it requested to remain on site for monitoring following an injection.  Over 167 million doses have been administered worldwide with very few serious reactions.
  • Does the COVID vaccine cause infertility?  No.  This is a false claim and there is no evidence that COVID vaccine can lead to infertility.  Information about this false claim can be reviewed in a NDDOH document found on the CVHD website at https://bit.ly/2OxXmVs.
  • I would rather just have the disease than get a vaccine! Contracting COVID has proven to be deadly for some and has caused serious long term side effects for others.  Receiving a vaccination prevents damage to your body caused by the disease.  This damage can impact you for the rest of your life.  The COVID vaccine does not include the live virus, meaning it does not give you the disease, rather it helps your body recognize the disease and improves your ability to fight the virus naturally.

Again, CVHD encourages anyone wishing to receive a vaccination to sign up for the first available appointment offered to them.  CVHD currently has open vaccination appointments available and they are posted on their website at www.centralvalleyhealth.org.   Participants who cannot register themselves are encouraged to call CVHD at 252-8130 for assistance.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A Wisconsin organization that opposes religious displays on public property says a new North Dakota law that allows the Ten Commandments in public schools is unconstitutional. The Freedom From Religion Foundation, based in Madison, says the law is “an attempt to sneak religion and Christian nationalism into public schools.” The foundation says it will challenge any displays that go up in schools. Gov. Doug Burgum has signed a bill designed to protect schools and teachers from lawsuits that might arise from posting the Ten Commandments in classrooms. Some attorneys and school administrators also warned the legislation is unconstitutional and would lead to costly and unwinnable legal fights.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum and Manitoba Premier Brian Pallister have unveiled a plan to administer COVID-19 vaccinations to Manitoba-based truck drivers transporting goods to and from the United States. The Essential Worker Cross-Border Vaccination Initiative expects to vaccinate up to 4,000 Manitoba drivers in the next six to eight weeks. Burgum says North Dakota has adequate vaccine supplies and it benefits both countries to work together on giving shots. North Dakota and Manitoba share the fifth-busiest border crossing between the United States and Canada.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum has signed legislation that eases restrictions on citizens’ rights to use deadly force in self-defense. The legislation signed Tuesday modifies the state’s “castle law” and would allow someone to use deadly force without retreating in certain circumstances. Its sponsor, Republican Rep. Ben Koppelman, called the legislation “the most consequential gun law change in North Dakota for a long time.” The bill received broad support in both Republican-led legislative chambers. The National Conference of State Legislatures says at least 25 states have laws saying there is no duty to retreat before using deadly force against an attacker.

DES MOINES, Iowa  (UJ)  – The University of Jamestown men’s volleyball team opened pool play at the 2021 NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Championship with a sweep of Georgetown (Ky.) Tuesday afternoon. Set scores were 25-15, 25-20, and 25-21.

Jamestown (21-2 overall) will face Park (Mo.) Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the final match of pool play.

Tanner Woods (FR/Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Samuel Jackman (SO/St. Jean Baptiste, Manitoba) each had four of UJ’s 13 kills in the opening set as the Jimmies hit .360 on 25 attempts. Jamestown led 8-7 and went on a 4-0 run started by a Woods kill to go ahead 12-7. Georgetown recorded back-to-back points to close the gap to 12-9, but UJ scored four of the next six to create some separation. A service ace by Derek Owens (FR/Andover, Minn.) clinched set one for the Jimmies.

Georgetown took advantage of six Jimmie attack errors and four service errors in set two, and had leads of 9-6, 12-8, and 17-13. Down by four Jamestown rallied back with a 6-0 run for a 19-17 lead. Owens, Woods, and Caylor Cox (FR/Helena, Mont.) all had kills as part of the streak. The Tigers scored twice to tie the set at 19, but Woods and Jackman kills put UJ back in front by a pair. Jamestown finished the set by scoring four of the final five points to take a 2-0 match lead.

Cox and Austin Jacob (FR/Houston, Texas) both posted five kills in set three, combining to hit 10 of 11 with no attack errors. Despite trailing 2-0 in the match and 9-3 early in the set, Georgetown stormed back to take a 15-14 lead. After the teams traded points to tie the set at 20, Jacob, Cox, and Owens racked up kills to give UJ a 23-20 lead. A kill by the Tigers stopped the rally, but a service error on the next play followed by another Cox kill closed out the match.

Cox had 10 kills to lead Jamestown, which also got eight kills from Jackman and seven each from Jacob, Owens, and Woods. Jacob hit a team-best .875 and Owens hit .667. MLB…

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Minnesota Twins right fielder Max Kepler is among the club’s positive cases for the coronavirus. Manager Rocco Baldelli announced Kepler’s absence with COVID-19 ahead of a doubleheader against the Athletics. The scheduled opener of the series Monday was postponed, as were the Twins’ final two games against the Angels in Anaheim over the weekend, because of the outbreak on the team. Left-hander Caleb Thielbar is also in quarantine because of contact tracing. Baldelli said Thielbar spent a significant amount of time around one of the positive players, but he expects the reliever may not miss as much time and “his specifics are a little bit different than the other guys.”

— Matt Olson hit a grand slam and Mitch Moreland homered twice to back Sean Manaea’s (mah-NY’-ahz) shutout as the Athletics slammed the Twins, 7-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Moreland connected for a two-run homer in the second inning and a solo drive in the fourth off Matt Shoemaker.

— Oakland swept the twinbill as Jesús Luzardo (loo-ZAHR’-doh) allowed two hits over 5 1/3 innings of a 1-0 victory. Jake Diekman stranded two runs in the seventh for his first save, getting a great catch from Mark Canha (KAN’-ah) at the warning track in left to finish it.

— Jake Arrieta (ar-ee-EH’-tah) pitched five effective innings and Craig Kimbrel escaped a jam in the ninth to secure the Cubs’ 3-1 victory over the Mets. Eric Sogard had two hits, scored twice and drove in a run to help Chicago rebound from Sunday’s 13-4 loss to Atlanta.

UNDATED (AP) — The Los Angeles Dodgers have ended their first two-game losing streak of the season, thanks to an outstanding pitching performance.

Julio Urías (oo-REE’-uh) threw one-hit ball over seven innings of a 1-0 win over the Mariners in Seattle. Urías struck out a career-high 11 in winning a matchup against Marco Gonzales, who surrendered Corey Seager’s RBI single in the third inning.

Urías allowed two baserunners and neither reached second base.

The Dodgers played without outfielder Mookie Betts, one day after he was hit on the right forearm by a pitch. Manager Dave Roberts doesn’t expect it to be a long-term issue.

In other major league action:

— Corbin Burnes lowered his season ERA to 0.37 while fanning 10 in six innings of the Brewers’ 6-0 shutout of the Padres. Billy McKinney homered to spark a five-run third that included a two-run double by Travis Shaw and a two-run single from Omar Narváez (nahr-VY’-ehz).

— Yan Gomes (yahn gohmz) drew a four-pitch walk against Giovanny Gallegos (jee-oh-VAH’-nee gy-AY’-gohs) to force in the go-ahead run in an odd eighth inning that pushed the Nationals past the Cardinals, 3-2. St. Louis led 2-1 until Gallegos walked a batter and hit another before Trea Turner’s RBI single to right on an 0-2 count tied the game.

— Alex Dickerson and Wilmer Flores went deep during a six-run eighth that propelled the Giants past the Phillies, 10-7. Buster Posey had his first multihomer game in nearly five years, and Tommy La Stella also went deep for San Francisco.

— Reds reliever Lucas Sims walked in a run to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 lead over Cincinnati in the top of the eighth inning before the game was suspended because of rain. It will resume before the teams play their regularly scheduled game on Wednesday night.

— Xander Bogaerts (BOH’-gahrts) hit a three-run home run to back Eduardo Rodríguez as the Red Sox doubled up the Blue Jays, 4-2. Rodríguez allowed two runs on three hits over six innings of his first home start since missing all of last year due to COVID-19 complications.

— The Yankees broke their five-game losing streak by scoring on a run-scoring wild pitch and bases-loaded walk from Braves reliever Nate Jones in the eighth inning of a 3-1 victory. Gio Urshela (ur-SHEH’-luh) hit a tying home run in the fifth inning off Charlie Morton and New York won with only five hits.

— Trey Mancini and Freddy Galvis (GAL’-vees) each hit a solo homer in the third inning before the Orioles completed a 7-5 decision over the Marlins. Matt Harvey allowed three runs in five innings for his first win since July 13, 2019, with the Angels.

— Carlos Rodón (roh-DAHN’) followed up his no-hitter against the Indians by hanging around for five shaky innings to beat Cleveland for the second time in a week, 8-5. José Abreu (ah-BRAY’-oo) smacked a pair of solo homers to back Rodón, who was reached for two runs and three hits.

— Brandon Lowe (low), Austin Meadows and Mike Zunino (zuh-NEE’-noh) homered and the Rays pounded out 17 hits in a 14-7 rout of the Royals. Meadows, Randy Arozarena (ah-roh-zah-RAY’-nah) and Joey Wendle had three hits each, and Manual Margot (mahn-WEHL’ mahr-GOH’) and Yoshi Tsutsugo (soo-SOO’-goo) each drove in three.

— Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) pitched four rollercoaster scoreless innings in the Angels’ 6-2 win over the Rangers, striking out seven and walking six. Mike Trout, Albert Pujols (POO’-hohlz) and Kurt Suzuki provided round-trippers as Anaheim won for the sixth time in nine home games.

— The Rockies rolled to a 6-2 win over the Astros as C.J. Cron (krohn) homered and drove in five runs. Dom Nuñez also hit a home run in Colorado’s first win in its last 10 meetings with Houston.

— The Tigers and Pirates were postponed in snowy Detroit because of inclement weather. The teams will try to play a doubleheader Wednesday.

Rivers brings a 9.1-point career scoring average and plenty of playoff experience to the Nuggets. He is expected to be available when Denver visits Portland on Wednesday night.

SUPER LEAGUE-ENGLAND

English clubs abandon breakaway Super League by quitting

LONDON (AP) — A bid to create a Super League in European soccer is fading after all six English clubs dramatically abandoned plans to join the breakaway circuit.

Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and Tottenham deserted the 12-team project amid an escalating backlash that saw the government warn of legislating to stop the breakaway competition.

The Super League responded by saying its breakaway European competition is being reconsidered after exodus of all English clubs. The project was overseen by Real Madrid President Florentino Perez, who also signed up Barcelona and Atlético Madrid in Spain, and Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan from Italy. The rival for the UEFA- (yoo-AY’-fah) run Champions League became unviable without the six clubs from the world’s richest league.

City was the first club to publicly announce its decision Tuesday, Chelsea soon followed and Liverpool was publicly urged to desert the Super League by its players who repeated a tweet first posted by Jordan Henderson. The Liverpool captain wrote, “We don’t like it and we don’t want it to happen. This is our collective position.”

The renegade league featuring teams from England, Spain and Italy was announced on Sunday, creating an immediate uproar from government officials, fans, players and managers. Man City’s Pep Guardiola and Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp have been among the most vocal managers to rail against the league.

NFL-STEELERS-TOMLIN

Steelers coach signs extension

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Mike Tomlin is sticking with the Pittsburgh Steelers. The club announced its longtime coach has signed a contract extension that runs through the 2024 season.

Tomlin is 145-78-1 in 14 years with the Steelers with one Super Bowl victory.

The deal means Tomlin will likely be part of the process whenever quarterback Ben Roethlisberger opts to retire. The 39-year-old Roethlisberger is returning for the 2021 season but the team has no heir apparent in place.

In other NFL news:

— Veteran tackle D.J. Fluker has signed a one-year contract with the Dolphins, fortifying an offensive line that had three rookie starters last year. Fluker has 96 career starts with four teams, including eight for the Ravens last year.

— The Bears re-signed veteran safety Tashaun Gipson to a one-year contract. Gipson signed with the Bears last year after being released by Houston and started all 16 games, making 64 tackles and two interceptions.

HORSE RACING-BAFFERT SUSPENSION

Trainer Bob Baffert successfully appeals suspension

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. (AP) — Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert has successfully appealed his 15-day suspension to the Arkansas Racing Commission. The six-time Kentucky Derby winner can now resume preparations to run Medina Spirit in next weekend’s Derby.

Baffert was fined and suspended last year by Arkansas stewards for a pair of drug positives after Charlatan and Gamine tested positive for the painkiller lidocaine following their wins at Oaklawn Park on May 2.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says the conviction of former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin in the killing of George Floyd “can be a giant step forward” for the nation in the fight against systemic racism. Biden spoke from the White House alongside Vice President Kamala Harris, with the pair calling for Congress to act swiftly to address policing reform. “It’s not enough,” Biden said of the verdict. “We can’t stop here.” Harris said, “A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice.” Biden spoke after telephoning Floyd’s family, telling them, “We’re all so relieved.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. is set to meet President Joe Biden’s latest vaccine goal of administering 200 million coronavirus shots in his first 100 days in office, as the White House steps up its efforts to inoculate the rest of the public. With more than 50% of adults at least partially vaccinated, Biden on Wednesday will reflect on his efforts to expand vaccine distribution and access in his first three months in the White House. But with all those 16 and older now eligible for shots, the president is expected to outline his administration’s plans to drive up the vaccination rate even further.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden will pledge to cut U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at least in half by 2030 as he convenes a virtual climate summit with 40 world leaders. That’s according to three people with knowledge of the plans who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss them. The 50% target would nearly double the nation’s previous commitment and help the Biden administration prod other countries for ambitious emissions cuts as well. The nonbinding but symbolically important pledge is a key element of the two-day summit, which begins Thursday as world leaders gather online to share strategies to combat climate change.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares have opened higher in Europe after a day of declines in Asia, as earnings take the spotlight. U.S. futures also edged higher. Worsening coronavirus outbreaks in Asia have cast a shadow over prospects for a regional recovery. But investors also are focusing on a stream of company earnings reports this week. The rebound for shares in Europe follows a retreat Tuesday on Wall Street, where the S&P 500 gave back 0.7%, pulling the index further below the record high it set on Friday. Small-company stocks, which have been beating the rest of the market in recent months, fell more than other sectors.
