Fort Seward, Jamestown, Dakota Territory – July the 6th, in the year 2013 – Sgt Keller, on detachment from Fortress Monroe, Virginia, held a demonstration of the Gatling’s Battery Gun. Photos to document the occasion were taken by M.R. Sheppard of Jamestown, and can be found in the pages of the face book. A small sample are published here with this story.
The Sgt, an instructor at the United States School of Artillery, is an expert in cannons, mortars, and Gatling guns. A large crowd of local men, women, and even children were onlookers. Sgt Keller enlisted the aid of two members from the 20th Infantry, Dale Marks and Keith Norman, as he put it, of “average intelligence”, to fire the gun while he stood back in a safe position, to be out of enemy fire. The demonstration started with firing several rounds from the cannon. They then proceeded to show the loading procedures, firing smaller number of rounds before they unleashed hellfire with a burst of 510 rounds in the blink of an eye from the Gatling’s Battery Gun.
