In world and national news

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden met for nearly an hour Wednesday with the top Republican negotiator on infrastructure, Sen. Shelley Moore Capito. Time is running out to strike a bipartisan deal, but they have agreed to reconnect Friday. The president is proposing $1.7 trillion for roads, bridges and other investments. The Republicans countered last week with $928 billion, and Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell said tapping unspent COVID-19 aid is “key” to reaching a deal. Biden has already sized up that offer as unworkable. The administration says the deadline for making progress toward a deal is June 7.

TEL AVIV, Israel (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s opponents are pushing for a quick parliament vote to formally end his lengthy rule. They hoped on Thursday to head off any last-minute attempts by the premier to derail their newly announced coalition government. The latest maneuvering began just hours after opposition leader Yair Lapid and his main coalition partner, Naftali Bennett, declared they had reached a deal for a governing coalition of eight parties from across the political spectrum. They all share the goal of toppling Netanyahu after a record-setting 12 years in power.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Police say a bomb has ripped through a minivan in the western part of the Afghan capital Kabul, killing at least four people. No one took responsibility for the attack in the neighborhood, which is largely populated by the minority Hazara ethnic group who are mostly Shiite Muslims. The Islamic State however has carried out similar bombings in the area, including an attack on two minivans on Tuesday that killed at least 10 people. Shiites are a minority in mostly Sunni Afghanistan, and the Islamic State affiliate has declared war against them. In a statement late on Wednesday, IS said they had also bombed an electrical grid station on on Tuesday, leaving much of Kabul in darkness.

LARNACA, Cyprus (AP) — The foreign minister of Cyprus says three European Union member nations and three Middle Eastern countries are looking to train personnel in border, customs and cybersecurity techniques at a cutting-edge U.S.-funded facility expected to be ready early next year. Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides said after inspecting the under-construction facility with U.S. Ambassador Judith Garber on Thursday that the Cyprus Center for Land, Open-Seas, and Port Security (CYCLOPS) is scheduled to start operating on Jan. 16, 2022. Christodoulides said Cyprus was selected for the center because the Mediterranean island nation is located on the southeastern end of the EU and because it enjoys good relations with the nations in the Mideast.

BANGKOK (AP) — European shares are lower after a mixed session in Asia. Benchmarks fell in Paris, London and Hong Kong while Tokyo and Seoul advanced. Investors are awaiting an update on U.S. employment on Friday. In New York, the S&P 500 edged up 0.1% Wednesday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average and the Nasdaq also rose about 0.1%. Shares in movie theater operator AMC Entertainment nearly doubled in another bout of heavy trading as the company embraced its status as a “meme” stock being driven higher by hordes of individual investors.
