NFL-NEWS

— The Vikings have signed former Titans cornerback Tye Smith. The move adds a little depth and experience to a group that was lacking both last season. Smith spent the last four years with the Titans.

UNDATED (AP) — The federal judge presiding over the NFL’s $1 billion settlement of brain injury claims has invited lawyers for Black players who call the settlement racially biased to join mediation over the issue.

The lawyers have challenged the settlement’s use of “race-norming” in dementia testing since 2018. The practice assumes Black players start with lower cognitive skills and makes it harder for them to show injury and get an award. The judge’s order comes a day after the NFL pledged to end the practice and review the scores of retired players who believe the race-based scoring adjustments deprived them of settlements that average $500,000 or more.

In other NFL news:

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — With U.S. businesses scrambling to fill millions of jobs as the economy reopens much faster than many had expected, Friday’s jobs report for May will help show whether their efforts are succeeding. The fading of the pandemic has released substantial pent-up demand among consumers to eat out, travel, shop, attend public events and visit with friends and relatives. But it has also produced a disconnect between companies and the unemployed. Businesses are rushing to add workers immediately. Yet many of the unemployed are either seeking better jobs than they had before the pandemic, still lack affordable child care, worry about contracting COVID-19 or have decided to retire early.

(AP)  China has vehemently objected to President Joe Biden’s expansion of a list of Chinese companies whose shares are off-limits to U.S. investors. The executive order issued late Thursday nearly doubled the number of companies subject to the ban. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman said Beijing would take unspecified “necessary measures” to protect the rights and interests of Chinese companies. The new executive order expanded the list first announced by Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump to 59 companies from 31. It targets investments in shares of Chinese defense and surveillance technology firms that the U.S. says take part in surveillance of religious and ethnic minorities, repression or “serious human rights abuses.”

(AP)  France is putting itself back on the menu as a destination for international tourists who have had coronavirus jabs. The relaxed rules will kick in from Wednesday, offering a boost for France’s tourism sector. Tourism will still not be possible from countries wrestling with virus surges and worrisome variants, including India, South Africa and Brazil. Vaccinated visitors from the United States, Britain and many other parts of the world will no longer need to quarantine on arrival and will no longer have to justify the reasons for their visit. They will, however, be asked for a recent negative test. Vaccinated visitors from Europe will no longer need to undergo testing.

The relaxed rules will kick in starting Wednesday. Tourism will not be possible, however, from countries wrestling with virus surges and worrisome variants.
