Jamestown (JRMC) Although her chemotherapy is complete, one Jamestown woman says her cancer journey is not over.
Rhonda Ravely, Jamestown, began chemotherapy this winter after doctors diagnosed her with cancer of the left breast.
What started as a golf-ball-sized tumor is now challenging for her oncologist to find, Ravely said, saying she is looking forward to the next steps of surgery and radiation. May 28 was a “big day” for her as she rang the bell to celebrate her graduation from the JRMC Cancer Center.
She says, “I’m feeling wonderful,”
Rhonda, 55, is a material services technician at Jamestown Regional Medical Center. She remembers when JRMC partnered with Roger Maris to open the JRMC Cancer Center in 2019. She also remembers how much miles matter when a person is sick. Since it opened, the cancer center has saved nearly 500,000 miles of travel for residents in the Jamestown region.
She says, “Miles matter. For me, I say ‘miles of smiles’ because I didn’t have to drive to Fargo. Some days, I received my chemo at lunch and then went back to work.”
The convenience of care close to home meant reduced travel, reduced time away from work and increased quality of life. Not having to worry about transportation costs while balancing reduced hours at work meant Rhonda could concentrate on healing.
She says, “The chemo is working. I can tell a difference.”
Helping her heal is her husband, Tom, as well as her siblings and coworkers. One of the reasons Jamestown Regional Medical Center is a Top 100 Best Place to Work is because of the culture of caring.
Current and former colleagues like Cindy Nelms, Nikki Bohn, Elaine Kuske, Shelly Fercho and Debbie Holmstrom have gone especially out of their way, Rhonda says they’ve helped with meal preparation, quilt sewing and even just listening.
She jokes with appreciation about Nelms and how she offered to vacuum her house.
Rhonda adds, “Tom is wonderful,He took care of all that.”
Rhonda Ravely is the 11th person from the JRMC Cancer Center to ring the graduation bell. When a breast cancer survivor rings the bell, it is significant to Lisa Jackson, JRMC Foundation Director.
That’s because the Marsha Leigh Espeseth family gifted the bell to the JRMC Cancer Center in memory of the family matriarch. Marsha Espeseth died of breast cancer in 1987 at the age of 34. Her husband and grown children donated the bell in her memory, so people today like Rhonda could ring the bell that she never could.
Lisa says, “Community members like the Espeseth family and so many others made the cancer center possible. I hope they see how their generosity continues to support the community in general and individuals like Rhonda specifically. Cancer is challenging enough. This support makes a difference for our friends and neighbors.”
Today, Rhonda is continuing the tradition of giving back. She and Jackson are planning a special fundraiser to support future patients like Rhonda, who says, losing her hair felt like losing control, Giving back and helping others is her way of reclaiming her power.
She added, “One of the hardest parts of this is losing my hair. For a woman to lose her hair, it’s something,”
The next steps for Rhonda includes meeting with her surgeon in July. In the meantime, she plans to camp and spend time with her family. She says, “I’m ready to get this done and move forward with my journey.”

NBA PLAYOFFS-SCHEDULE
Hawks top 76ers behind Young’s 35
UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Hawks were a team that no one wanted to face in the NBA playoffs. They continue to back up that notion.
Trae Young scored 25 of his 35 points while the Hawks dominated the first half to take Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series, 128-124 at Philadelphia.
The Hawks made 14 of their first 18 shots from the floor, scored 17 straight points in the first half and led by 20 at intermission. The 76ers pulled within three with 1:01 left, but Bogdan Bogdanovic followed with a 3-pointer to seal it.
Bogdanovic and John Collins each scored 21 points for Atlanta.
Joel Embiid had 39 points for the 76ers after missing their previous playoff game with torn cartilage in his right knee.
Game 2 is Tuesday in Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, someone finally won a home game in the Clippers-Mavericks first-round series, and it came at the right time.
The Clippers have advanced to the Western Conference semifinals with a 126-115 win over the Mavericks in Game 7. It was the first series in NBA history in which the road team won the first six games.
Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard scored 28 points and Marcus Morris added 23 as the Clippers were able to do what the defending champion Lakers could not. Paul George added 22 points, 10 assists and six rebounds for the Clippers, whose backups outscored the Dallas reserves, 27-6.
Luka Doncic (DAHN’-chich) had 46 points, 14 assists and seven rebounds to lead the fifth-seeded Mavs, who have yet to win a playoff series since capturing the NBA championship in 2011.
The Jazz will take on the Clippers in the next round.

Harden to miss Game 2
NEW YORK (AP) — Brooklyn Nets All-Star guard James Harden will miss Game 2 of the Eastern Conference semifinals Monday night because of right hamstring tightness.
Harden left Saturday’s 115-107 victory over Milwaukee in Game 1 after just 43 seconds because of an injury that troubled him during the latter part of the regular season. He missed 18 straight and 20 of 21 games late in the season.
Coach Steve Nash said Harden’s recent troubles with the injury made his availability for later in the series hard to predict.

NHL-BORDER CROSSING
Canada opens border to US NHL teams

The six-foot Rybakina was playing in the fourth round of a major for the first time.
Williams has won the French Open three times but hasn’t reached the quarterfinals in Paris since she was the runner-up in 2016. Her loss to Rybakina came hours after Roger Federer withdrew, saying he needed to let his body recover ahead of Wimbledon after a long third-round victory that wasn’t completed until around 1am on Sunday.
Tamara Zidansek and Paula Badosa joined Rybakina in the quarters, but No. 15 Victoria Azarenka absorbed a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 loss to No. 31 Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

In world and national news…
TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are mixed, as initial euphoria about the gains that closed out last week on Wall Street quickly fades. Shares fell in France and Germany but rose in Britain, while U.S. futures were lower. In Asia, benchmarks rose in Tokyo and Seoul. While in the U.S. and parts of Europe where life is returning to something resembling normalcy, in Asia coronavirus outbreaks remain a pressing concern. China reported its exports rose 28% in May while imports jumped 51%, though the pace of increase slowed after huge gains early in the year.
WASHINGTON (AP) — Bracing for political trouble, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has warned Democratic colleagues that June will “test our resolve.” As senators return Monday to consider infrastructure, voting rights and other difficult priorities, it is a crucial moment for his party in Congress. Six months into the party’s hold on Washington, with Joe Biden in the White House, the senators are under pressure to make gains on their campaign promises. Talks over an infrastructure package teeter and the Democrats’ other priorities are stacking up. Fed up, some senators want to change the Senate rules to make it easier to pass bills over Republican opposition.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court is being asked to decide whether the government can continue to require men alone, and not women, to register for the draft when they turn 18. The question of who has to register for the draft could be viewed as one with little practical impact. The last time there was a draft was during the Vietnam War, and the military has been all-volunteer since. But the requirement to register for the draft is one of the few remaining places where federal law treats men and women differently. The justices could say as soon as Monday whether they will hear a case involving the Military Selective Service Act.
(AP) Slovakia has become the second European Union country to administer the Russian-made Sputnik V vaccine. Slovakia has 200,000 doses of Sputnik V vaccine available but only about 5,000 people registered to receive the two-shot vaccine in the nation of 5.4 million. Hungary is the other EU nation that has been using Sputnik V, which has not been authorized by the European Medicines Agency. A secret deal for Slovakia to purchase 2 million Sputnik V shots orchestrated by then-Prime Minister Igor Matovic triggered a political crisis in March that resulted in the Slovak government’s collapse. Slovakia has been administering the Pfizer, Moderna and AstraZeneca jab vaccines, and will also use Johnson & Johnson. All of those vaccines have been authorized by EMA.
BANGKOK (AP) — China has reported its exports and imports surged in May and its politically sensitive surplus with the U.S. grew as the pandemic was waning in important markets in the West. Three years into a tariff war with Washington, tensions over the trade gap persist even as business recovers after last year’s shocks as vaccinations rates rise. Customs data released Monday showed China’s exports rose 28% from a year earlier and imports soared 51%, but growth was leveling off after the country’s stunning recovery from last year’s slump. The trade surplus with the United States rose 14% to $31.8 billion, while China’s trade surplus with the European Union was $12.7 billion.
