Valley City  (CSi)  The Valley City Parks & Recreation is planning another exciting summer of Music at the City Park Bandshell on Wednesday evenings at 7:15 pm starting June 2nd. This summer they will be celebrating 25 years in existence as Music in the Park. Musicians are featured each week showcasing their talents for the community and surrounding area.

Event coordinator Diane Sommerfeld said the free concerts started as “Music in the City Park Bandshell” the summer of 1996. Families and local groups volunteered their time and talents each week. The first couple years the entertainment wasn’t regular but it eventually grew to be every Wednesday evening in June and July. Through the years, interest has grown and we now enjoy entertainment till mid-August.

Music in the Park continued each summer until 2009, the year of the flood. After the flood of 2009, the band shell was declared structurally unsafe and music in the park relocated to the courthouse lawn. During late summer of 2014, work began to move the City Park Bandshell to a slightly new location in the park. It is now placed on a new concrete foundation. The Bandshell withstood the moving process with very little additional structural damage. The programs returned to the bandshell in July, 2015. Fully planning on returning to the bandshell the summer of 2016, the flood protection construction project at the entrance of City Park began that spring. Programs returned to the City Park Bandshell fully the summer of 2017!

“It’s very exciting to celebrate 25 years of Music in the Park this summer! We are hoping to feature special guests & activities throughout the summer.” Diane Sommerfeld said. “We have a great line up of programs with some new & some familiar groups. You are in for a treat each week at the beautiful City Park again this year. We welcome everyone to join us!”
The bandshell stands strong. There is still some work to complete and is a continued work in progress. Donations can be made to “Save the Bandshell, PO Box 422, Valley City, ND 58072.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State tax revenue exceeded projections in April. The Bismarck Tribune reports April’s general fund revenues outpaced 2019 legislative projections by 1.2%, or more than $2.7 million. Revenues have exceeded projections by 2.2%, or $96.6 million, since mid-2019. May’s revenue numbers aren’t available yet but State Office of Management and Budget Director Joe Morrisette said Monday they looked to be what he called “fairly positive.” Overall sales taxes, the largest source of general fund revenue, are still 2.5% lower than the 2019 forecast, though, reflecting the disruptive effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. Overall oil taxes are 26% under forecasts.

Rodgers missing from minicamp

UNDATED (AP) — The Aaron Rodgers saga continues in Green Bay.

The three-time MVP quarterback wasn’t with the Packers for their first mandatory minicamp session on Tuesday after declining to participate in voluntary organized team activities.

The Packers have the option to fine Rodgers just over $93,000 if he misses all three minicamp sessions this week.

Rodgers’ future with the team has been uncertain ever since ESPN reported shortly before this year’s draft that Rodgers doesn’t want to return to Green Bay.

In other developments from NFL camps:

— Tom Brady is back on the practice field with the Buccaneers. The 43-year-old quarterback was a full participant Tuesday at mandatory minicamp for the Super Bowl champions, taking part in individual drills and doing some 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work. Coach Bruce Arians said last week there was a chance he’d limit Brady’s involvement as he recovers from offseason knee surgery.

— The Cardinals have signed linebacker and first-round pick Zaven Collins to his rookie contract. Collins is expected to be an immediate contributor in the middle of the defense alongside second-year linebacker Isaiah Simmons, who was the No. 8 overall pick last year. Collins was an AP All-American last season at Tulsa and also won the Nagurski Trophy, Lombardi Award and Bednarik Award

— The Ravens have signed guard Michael Schofield, who played 11 games last season for the Panthers and started three. Prior to that, Schofield played for the Chargers and Broncos.

Red Sox ace Sale eager to return

UNDATED (AP) — Injured Red Sox ace Chris Sale made a positive step in his return from Tommy John surgery, throwing 25 pitches off a bullpen mound at Fenway Park.

The 31-year-old left-hander said he would start tomorrow if the team would let him. But Red Sox manager Alex Cora said they needed to be patient to make sure Sale comes through rehab OK. Sale had elbow ligament replacement surgery in March, 2020. It typically takes a minimum of 12 months to recover from the procedure, but can stretch to two years.

Also in the majors:

— Khris Davis has been designated for assignment by the slumping Rangers as the team continues to rebuild with youth. Davis hit .157 with two home runs and five RBIs in his 22 games after missing the Rangers’ first 34 contests because of a left quad strain. He has struggled at the plate since leading the majors with 48 home runs in 2018.

— Mets manager Luis Rojas says he expects infielder Jeff McNeil to begin a rehab assignment by the end of the weekend. McNeil hasn’t played since May 16 because of a strained left hamstring. Rojas also said outfielder Michael Conforto is probably a couple weeks from starting his rehab assignment as he comes back from a strained right hamstring, but Luis Guillorme (gee-OHR’-may) could be activated this weekend

MEDINA SPIRIT-LAWSUIT

Baffert, Medina Spirit owners sue Kentucky racing officials

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Trainer Bob Baffert and the owners of Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit have filed a lawsuit against Kentucky racing officials.

They are seeking a temporary injunction they say is to prevent violation of due process rights. They also seek custody of “remnant” samples of the colt’s urine to prove that traces of the steroid betamethasone found in his system during a positive drug test did not come from an injection.

The suit states that the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission told the trainer and connections on June 1 that remnant samples of the samples had been “damaged/contaminated” during transport to the testing lab.

The 68-32 Senate vote on the bill demonstrated how confronting China is a rate issue that unites both parties in Congress despite intense partisan divisions.

MOSCOW (AP) — A court is expected to outlaw the organizations founded by Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny. The move is part of authorities’ efforts to muzzle critics ahead of a crucial parliamentary election in September. Prosecutors have asked the Moscow City Court to designate Navalny’s Foundation for Fighting Corruption and his sprawling network of regional offices as extremist organizations. In conjunction with a new law, the ruling expected Wednesday would bar people associated with the groups from running for public office. The extremism label also carries lengthy prison terms for activists who have worked with the organizations, anyone who donated to them, and even those who simply shared the groups’ materials. Navalny is the most adamant political foe of President Vladimir Putin.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s prime minister says the World Trade Organization should penalize China for “bad behavior when it occurs.” Prime Minister Scott Morrison was speaking Wednesday ahead of his departure for a Group of Seven leaders’ meeting in Britain. Morrison hopes to garner international support in a worsening trade dispute with China. He says Australia would be “working with others to buttress the role of the World Trade Organization.” The Australian government announced in December it would ask the WTO to intervene in its dispute with China over barley. The rules-making body is facing calls for restructuring and reform as it struggles to forge a long-awaited world trade pact.
