Jamestown (CSi) On Friday the Stutsman County Commission held a special meeting reviewing the tax abatement request on the ADM soybean crushing plant.

Commission Chairman Mark Klose pointed out that questions need to be answered, before the June 15 Commission meeting including water usage at the ADM plant.

ADM Senior Tax Manager Richard Dye reported that they would not exceed what the previous Cargill site was using, saying, it would acquire six water permits from Cargill.”

Another issue being addressed is traffic at theSpiritwood Energy Park with the new facility.

Others raising questions are Spiritwood Township, Barnes County North school, Jamestown Rural Fire Department, with the effect the tax abatement would have on each, along with the length of the term.

ADM’s request is to have $200,000 payments in lieu of taxes for 20 years rather than property taxes estimated at about $600,000 annually.

FARGO (KFGO KVRR) – Bail has been set at $500,000 cash-only for the man accused of robbing four Fargo businesses this week.

Twenty-one-year-old Hunter Havisto made his first court appearance Friday in Cass County District Court.

Havisto is charged with four counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, two counts of burglary and three counts of theft.

Havisto is accused of robbing the 13th Ave. Walmart and Casey’s on Tuesday, M&H convenience store on Main Avenue Wednesday and Mister Money on 33rd St. on Thursday.

A Mister Money employee fired shots at a stolen car that Havisto used to get away from Thursday’s robbery. He was not injured.

Havisto was arrested without incident Thursday after police located the stolen car in the area of 6th Avenue and 23rd St. S.

A Cass County prosecutor told Judge John Irby that Havisto “led the community on a one-man crime spree.”

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s Republican legislative leaders are in no hurry to spend an additional $1 billion in federal coronavirus aid, despite grumbling from some lawmakers that the funds should be distributed sooner rather than later. Senate Majority Leader Rich Wardner and Ray Holmberg, who heads the powerful Senate appropriations committee, say they are awaiting federal guidance on how the money can be used. Holmberg said Friday that officials are also still calculating the impact the coronavirus pandemic had on the state’s economy. Wardner says he doesn’t understand why there is such a hurry to distribute the funds.

In world and national news…

CARBIS BAY, England (AP) — Group of Seven leaders have brought pledges to share vaccine doses and make a fairer global economy to a seaside summit in England. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson opened the summit on Friday saying the coronavirus pandemic should not be allowed to leave a “lasting scar” on the world. The wealthy nations’ leaders were all smiles and unity as Johnson greeted them on the freshly raked sand of Carbis Bay, but jostled about who is doing most to help the world’s poorer nations fight back from the coronavirus pandemic. The wealthy democracies club is expected to commit to sharing at least 1 billion vaccine shots with struggling countries including 500 million doses from the United States.

(AP) Queen Elizabeth II has hosted the Group of Seven leaders at an evening reception where Britain’s royals mingled with some of the world’s most powerful politicians. The event included royals, world leaders and their spouses enjoying drinks at Cornwall’s Eden Project, an attraction that features the world’s largest indoor rainforest within giant domes. Three generations of the monarchy attended the event, held on the first evening of a three-day summit in Cornwall, southwest England. Prince Charles and his wife Camilla were joined by Prince William and his wife Kate, who were taking part in G-7 events for the first time. The leaders and spouses will have a dinner of roasted turbot, Cornish new potatoes and greens with wild garlic pesto cooked by a local chef.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department’s internal watchdog has launched an investigation after revelations that former President Donald Trump’s administration secretly seized phone data from at least two House Democrats as part of an aggressive leaks probe. Democrats called the disclosures a “shocking” abuse of power. House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff and California Rep. Eric Swalwell say Apple notified them last month that their metadata had been subpoenaed and turned over to the Justice Department in 2018. That was as their committee was investigating the former president’s ties to Russia.

(AP)  Officials declared Chicago fully reopened, ending a requirement that people wear face masks in most indoor places and lifting capacity limits. Chicago sometimes veered from the state’s restrictions and opted to be stricter or more lenient than the state required. But city officials decided to join the rest of Illinois in lifting restrictions. That comes nearly 15 months after Gov. J.B. Pritzker issued the first stay-at-home order as coronavirus cases began to rise. People who aren’t vaccinated must still wear a mask indoors, and everyone will still need to wear masks inside health care facilities, jails, shelters, schools, taxis, ride-hailing vehicles and on public transportation. Businesses can still opt to require people to wear masks on their premises.

LONDON (AP) — Britain’s main doctors’ union has joined calls for the next planned lockdown easing in England to be delayed as figures showed new coronavirus cases across the U.K. running at their highest level since late February. Government figures showed that another 8,125 new cases were recorded on Friday. That’s the highest figure since Feb. 26 and means that the 7-day average, which smooths out daily fluctuations, has increased threefold over the past month. The British Medical Association said a “sensible delay” would help keep a lid on infections as it would allow more people to be vaccinated with first and second doses, particularly younger people who are seeing the highest proportion of infections.

(AP)  The U.S. is confronted with an ever-growing surplus of COVID-19 vaccines, looming expiration dates and stubbornly lagging demand at a time when the developing world is clamoring for doses to stem a rise in infections. Million-dollar prizes, free beer and marijuana, raffled-off hunting rifles and countless other giveaways around the country have failed to significantly move the needle on vaccine hesitancy, raising the specter of new outbreaks. The stockpiles are becoming more daunting each week, with states halting new orders and giving millions of doses back to the federal government. The nation seems likely to fall short of President Joe Biden’s goal of dispensing at least one shot to 70% of the nation’s adults by July 4.
