Bismarck  (NDAC)  North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports posted a total of 69,285 airline passenger boardings during the month of May. The demand for air travel has seen a steady recovery in recent months and has currently leveled to approximately 30% below pre-pandemic numbers. The industry has attributed the recent passenger growth to a recovery in leisure travel that has been ongoing due to warmer weather and a release of penned up demand.

North Dakota Aeronautics Commission, Executive Director, Kyle Wanner says, “We hope that the current trends continue and that our state maintains and grows in its demand for airline services as we move into the summer months.  Aviation is one of the safest ways to travel and I encourage everyone to consider their local airport as an option as they make any future travel plans.”

“Great News: Valley City’s Annual Drinking Water Report is again “Top Notch”. Our goal is to continually improve and maintain the quality of our water. Along with providing high quality water, Valley City drinking water has been voted the best tasting water in the state as well. Kudos to Wade and Sherry at our water treatment plant for all of their great work.

Having a pet is a blessing. That said having a pet also includes the responsibility to feed, groom and pick up its “poop”. People have mentioned that some pets are allowed to defecate in people’s lawns and it is left there. I have seen feces left in several places on the shared use paths! Please folks, SVFA and VCPR provide bags and dispensers, “PICK UP”.

If you are thinking a COVID Vaccination is not for you, will you please reassess a bit? If your concern is physical, results seem to show risks are fewer than some other shots we take regularly. If your concern is personal, consider that people without the vaccination can spread the virus to young or high-risk family and close friends. If your concern is political, please weigh the political importance with importance of protecting your family and friends. Call 845-8518 for information.

“Rally In the Valley” is Saturday June 19th. There are always a plethora of events for your enjoyment. See https://valleycitynd.org/pages/rally for details. Make plans with your family and friends to join you in Valley City for “Rally In the Valley”.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says popular boat ramps on Lake Sakakawea in North Dakota should remain in operation until freeze-up despite the dry conditions. The lake is about 6 feet lower than it was at this time a year ago. The Corps says it should peak about 1,838 feet at the end of July before dropping to about 1,836 feet at the end of October. Even at that elevation all of the primary boat ramps on Lake Sakakawea should remain in service. The Minot Daily News reports that the reservoir would have to drop many feet below current levels before any of the lake’s primary boat ramps would become questionable for use.

Bismarck  (CSi) – The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality (NDDEQ) was notified of a produced water spill at a pipeline site operated by Goodnight Midstream, LLC, in McKenzie County on Thursday, June 10. The incident occurred about three miles north of Johnson’s Corner.

Initial reports state that approximately 1,800 barrels (75,600 gallons) of produced water were released, impacting a wheat field. Produced water, also known as brine or saltwater, is a by-product of oil production. The cause of the spill was due to equipment failure.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s oil industry no longer has to ship all its radioactive waste out of state. A waste disposal facility in McKenzie County has started operating. Trucks have hauled nearly 100,000 tons of the radioactive material each year to landfills in other states after various companies failed to win approval to establish a repository in North Dakota. One company, KT Enterprises, won approval this year to operate a slurry well. It’s not a landfill. Radioactive waste is sent underground at a facility near Watford City. The waste is processed with saltwater, another unwanted byproduct of oil and gas production, and the mixture is then injected down a well deep into rock formations.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Dakota Access oil pipeline opponents have asked a federal judge to require detailed monthly status reports while the federal government conducts an extensive environmental review. The request comes after Judge James Boasberg ruled last month that the pipeline may continue operating while the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers conducts the review. Boasberg ordered the parties involved in the litigation to meet Friday to go over the next steps they plan to take. Pipeline attorneys told the court they shouldn’t have to provide status reports and renewed their longstanding request to have the case dismissed. Attorneys for the Standing Rock Sioux and other tribes say a decision to appeal the judge’s order could come later.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Court of Appeals has affirmed key approvals by state regulators of Enbridge Energy’s Line 3 oil pipeline replacement project. A three-judge panel ruled 2-1 on Monday that the Public Utilities Commission correctly granted Enbridge the certificate of need and route permit that the Canadian-based company needs for the Minnesota segment. Enbridge wants to replace the 1960s-era pipeline because it has been deteriorating and can run at only half capacity. More than 1,000 tribal and environmental activists gathered at construction sites near the headwaters of the Mississippi River last week to try to block the project.

UNDATED (AP) — The New York Rangers’ next head coach is someone who recently led a team to the Stanley Cup Final.

Gallant was a highly sought-after coaching candidate three years after leading Vegas to the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season. He is fresh off coaching Canada from an 0-3 start to the gold medal at the world hockey championship.

This will be Gallant’s fourth NHL head coaching job after stints with the Blue Jackets, Panthers and Golden Knights.

Rafael Devers (DEH’-vu rz) slammed a line drive off the Green Monster in the bottom of the ninth to give the Sox a 2-1 win over the Blue Jays. Devers went deep a half-inning after Vladimir Guerrero Jr. homered to tie it. It was Guerrero’s major league-leading 22nd home run of the season, and his fourth in as many games.

The walk-off win came after the Blue Jays belted 13 home runs in back-to-back weekend wins.

In other major league action:

Indians ace Bieber shut down 2 weeks with shoulder strain

UNDATED (AP) — Indians ace and reigning AL Cy Young winner Shane Bieber has a strained right shoulder and will not pitch for at least two weeks.

Manager Terry Francona said Bieber complained of tightness in his shoulder after pitching Sunday and underwent an MRI. The Indians placed the right-hander on the injured list and recalled reliever Kyle Nelson from Triple-A Columbus.

Bieber’s loss is a major blow to Cleveland, which has managed to stay in contention in the first 2 1/2 months of the season despite a rash of key injuries.

NFL NEWS

Jags say Lawrence on schedule for start of camp

UNDATED (AP) — The Jacksonville Jaguars expect quarterback Trevor Lawrence to be fully cleared to practice by training camp next month.

Lawrence was a limited participant as the Jaguars opened a two-day, mandatory minicamp Monday, getting reps in some seven-on-seven drills. The former Clemson star and this year’s No. 1 draft pick wore a compression sleeve on his left leg to help his hamstring, which he tweaked during practice last week.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— Patriots starting quarterback Cam Newton has returned to the field. He participated in the team’s first mandatory minicamp workout without restriction after missing the final three voluntary workouts last week with a hand injury.

— Stephon Gilmore was one of several players absent from the start of New England’s mandatory minicamp. He previous skipped the voluntary workouts as he enters the final year of his contract. The team’s top cornerback and the 2019 NFL defensive player of the year is due to make $7.5 million this year, which would rank him 25th among league cornerbacks.

— A person with direct knowledge of the decision says Jets wide receiver Jamison Crowder agreed to a renegotiated deal that will keep him with the team through this season. Crowder was due to make $10 million this year, but the Jets had been trying to get the 28-year-old receiver to take a pay cut.

— The Eagles have agreed to terms with quarterback Nick Mullens. The 26-year-old Mullens spent his first four seasons with the 49ers, going 5-11 in 16 starts. Mullens joins Jalen Hurts and Joe Flacco on Philadelphia’s roster.

HORSE RACING-BAFFERT-SUSPENSION

Baffert suing NYRA to get reinstated

NEW YORK (AP) — Trainer Bob Baffert has filed suit in federal court in an effort to get his suspension by the New York Racing Association lifted.

The NYRA suspended the Hall of Famer in mid-May after Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a postrace drug test that found 21 picograms of betamethasone. The steroid helps reduce swelling and Baffert acknowledged that Medina Spirit tested positive for the substance that is banned on race day in Kentucky.

The trainer later said an ointment used to treat a skin condition contained the substance.

TENNIS-WIMBLEDON

LONDON (AP) — The British government says Wimbledon will be allowed to have a full crowd at Centre Court for the men’s and women’s finals next month.

The announcement comes as the government eases restrictions related to the coronavirus pandemic. Wimbledon begins on June 28. The tournament will allow 50% capacity at the start but increase to 100% on Centre Court for the finals.

The decision to ease restrictions on crowds will also increase attendances at soccer’s European Championship and other sporting events.

OLYMPICS-BOXING CORRUPTION

Investigation to probe corruption in 2016 Olympic boxing

LAUSANNE, Switzerland (AP) — The International Boxing Association has commissioned an investigation into possible corruption and match-fixing at the 2016 Olympic tournament. The announcement comes just over a month before the next Olympics in Tokyo.

The investigation will be led by Richard McLaren. The Canadian law professor detailed Russian doping and cover-ups before the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The IOC has previously barred the AIBA from organizing the Tokyo tournament and has ruled that none of the referees or judges from 2016 will be eligible to have any role.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL-FIBA-SEXUAL ABUSE ALLEGATIONS

MIES, Switzerland (AP) — The president of basketball’s world governing body has stepped aside during its investigation into alleged systemic sexual abuse of women players at his home federation.

The New York Times published allegations implicating around 12 coaches and officials in sexual abuse that involved around 100 women players. Niang was not accused of abusing women.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration says it’ll enhance its analysis of threats from domestic terrorists as part of a nationwide strategy to combat domestic terrorism. The new plan unveiled Tuesday includes enhancing the sharing of intelligence within law enforcement agencies. The administration will work with tech companies to eliminate terrorist content online. The National Security Council plan comes six months after a mob of insurgents loyal to President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win. The Office of the Director of National Intelligence says domestic violent extremists pose an increased threat in 2021. President Joe Biden calls domestic terrorism “a stain on the soul of America.”

BRUSSELS (AP) — President Joe Biden appears to be on the cusp of ending a long-running dispute with the European Union over airline subsidies. That major breakthrough in the U.S-EU relationship could come later Tuesday, on the eve of his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Biden meets Tuesday with European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, where he was to discuss U.S.-EU relations and his upcoming meeting with Putin. Signs were emerging that the U.S. and the EU are moving to resolve a 17-year dispute over how much government subsidies each side can provide for its aircraft manufacturing giant — Boeing in the United States and Airbus in the EU.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden wants to imbue Independence Day with new meaning this year by encouraging nationwide celebrations to mark the country’s effective return to normalcy after 16 months of coronavirus pandemic disruption. The White House is expressing growing certainty that July Fourth will serve as a breakthrough moment in the nation’s recovery. The White House says the National Mall in Washington will host the traditional fireworks ceremony. It’s encouraging other communities to hold festivities as well. Tuesday’s announcement comes even as the U.S. is set to cross the grim milestone of 600,000 deaths from the virus.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department will tighten its rules around obtaining records from members of Congress. The news comes amid revelations the department under former President Donald Trump had secretly seized records from Democrats and members of the media and amid the news that the Justice Department’s top national security official is resigning. John Demers will leave his position by the end of next week. That’s according to a Justice Department official who spoke Monday to The Associated Press. The resignation comes amid questions about what Demers knew about the Justice Department’s efforts to confiscate phone data from House Democrats and reporters as part of the aggressive investigations into leaks.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — A cyberespionage campaign blamed on China was more sweeping than previously known, with suspected state-backed hackers exploiting a device meant to boost internet security to penetrate the computers of critical U.S. entities. The Associated Press has learned that the hackers targeted telecommunications giant Verizon and the country’s largest water agency. News broke earlier this month that the New York City subway system, the country’s largest, was also breached. It’s unclear what sensitive information, if any, was stolen in the campaign and some of the targets said they did not see any evidence of data being exfiltrated. The hack first came to light in April.

BANGKOK (AP) — Shares are mostly higher in Europe and Asia after gains in several big-name tech companies including Apple helped nudge the S&P 500 to another record high. Investors are watching for the outcome of the Federal Reserve’s policy setting meeting this week. Benchmarks rose in Paris, Frankfurt and Tokyo but fell in Hong Kong and Shanghai, where jitters over tensions between China and the U.S. are weighing on sentiment. On Monday, the Nasdaq rose 0.7%, but the Dow Jones Industrial Average and small-company stocks fell. Trading has been choppy as investors gauge the strength of the economic recovery and whether emerging signs of inflation will be transitory, as the Federal Reserve believes.
