(CSi)  Meeting in Special Session Thursday evening,  following  two-tie votes and then discussions, Jamestown Public School Board selected Dan Tweten  to fill the City seat vacancy  on the board. Mindi Schmitz was also a candidate.

The next school board election will held in June, 2022, when four seats will be up for election.

At the meeting the school board also approve…. the Teacher’s Master Agreement for 2021-2023,  the Support Wage Schedule,  the teachers, support staff, and Jamestown Hub Handbook.

The 2021-2022 Athletic Handbook was also approved and eSports will be added  later.

 

 

 

Jamestown  (CVHD) As of today [July 9, 2021], there are 2 active positive cases of the covid viruses reported in Stutsman county.

Central Valley Health District Unit Administrator, Robin Iszler says, “Vaccination and testing efforts continue throughout the community”.    CVHD continues to provide testing and vaccinations.  Daily testing numbers average about 15 per day.  Robin adds,  “We plan to continue to provide community testing as long as there is a need.”

 

Currently, CVHD is testing 3 days a week at the Jamestown Civic Center from 11 to 12, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays.  Those wanting testing should preregister at the testreg.nd.gov website.

 

CVHD wants the public to know that there will be NO testing scheduled at the Civic Center on July 27, 28, and 29 due to availability of the testing site.

 

CVHD encourages those with symptoms to seek testing from their medical provider during the week of July 26 to July 30.  Testing is also available in Valley City on Monday July 26 and Friday July 30 at the public health department as an additional opportunity for testing.

The investigations are ongoing and information on the website is likely to change as cases are investigated. (CCHD)  City/County Health reports, that testing continues to be important. If you have any symptoms, it is important to be tested. If you have symptoms and need to be tested at other times contact your clinic.

Administrator Theresa Will says testing has moved inside City County Health, at the CCHD location.  415 2nd Ave NE, from 12:30-p.m., to 1:30-p.m, with  the Quick test will be administered by staff members inside their offices in Valley City, on Mondays and Fridays.

Jamestown  (CSi)   On Thursday’s Wayne Byers Show on CSi Cable 2, Stutsman County Veterans Service Office, David Bratton said, The Burleigh County van is now operational.  The service taking veterans to appointments at the VA in Fargo has been idle the past several months due to the COVID-19 social distancing issues.

However there are new rules and restrictions in effect with COVID-19 safety precautions.  Those including riders being fully vaccinated, with one person per row seating, and facemasks are required.

The Stutsman County website has the schedule published.

In addition, David said the access to the Veteran Service Office has changed. Those coming to the LEC, and contact him from the lobby for access, due to security protocols.  He said facemasks are not required, but encouraged.

On other topics, David said the VA has extended the moratorium on foreclosures and evictions for VA backed home loans.

He pointed out that the VA Saleforce joins forces to help veterans develop tech sector job skills.

David added, that the VA has expanded the “Pride in All who Served,” program, providing education for LGBTQ vets.  His office has more information and enrollment.

He also pointed out that the VA has awarded $418 million in grants  to non-profit organizations to help fight veteran homelessness.  David said if anyone knows of a homeless veteran to contact his office.

The V-Indicator on drivers licenses remains available to veterans indicating their veterans status.

The Stutsman County Veterans Service Office is located in the basement of the LEC. Open Monday-Friday from 8-a.m. to noon, and 1-p.m., to 5-p.m.

Valley City  (CSi)  South Central Transit Network announces that wearing a facemask when riding, will remain a requirement through September 2021.

At that time the facemask wearing requirement will be revisited.

 

Valley City  (CSi)   – The Bridges Arts Council is proud to announce an exciting event Sunday, July 11th, as part of their “Sunday Afternoons In Pioneer Park” series called “The Spoken Word.”

It will feature award-winning, nationally renowned, singer, songwriter, and author Jessie Veeder, who calls Watford City, North Dakota home. Prior to Veeder’s performance, members of the Valley City High School Championship Speech team will open the event by offering poetry with which they competed for the National Speech and Debate Tournament in June. The Spoken Word event will be held at Pioneer Park Outdoor Amphitheater, located at 800 4th St. NW in Valley City, starting at 5:30 PM on Sunday, July 11th. Sandwiches and refreshments will be served.

Accessibility accommodations will be in place to enable all community members wishing to attend the performances to do so. The workshop will be offered to participants free of charge with all materials provided by the library. GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — Police say they’ve arrested a Grand Forks man accused of abducting a young girl. Authorities say the 52-year-old man forced the girl into his vehicle in Grand Forks about 4:30 p.m. Thursday. The girl was found unharmed not far from where the kidnapping occurred. According to police, the victim and some friends who witnessed the crime were able to give officers a description of the suspect and his vehicle. He was located and arrested without incident. Police are recommending the man face a felony kidnapping charge. The Grant Forks County State’s Attorney’s Office will review the case.

 

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The average price for gas in North Dakota has hit a six-year high. KFGO reports that according to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gas in the state is now $3. The last time drivers in North Dakota paid an average of $3 per gallon was Nov. 18, 2014. The current average is up 14 cents from a month ago and 90 cents from this time last year. It’s still 14 cents below the national average of $3.14, however. According to AAA, increases in the cost of crude oil spurred by robust demand are driving the price jumps.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota is suing the Biden administration over its suspension of new oil and gas leases on federal land and water. President Joe Biden shut down oil and gas lease sales from the nation’s public lands and waters in his first days in office, citing worries about climate change. The lawsuit filed Wednesday claims the move is unlawful and will cost the state hundreds of millions of dollars. The lawsuit seeks to force the U.S. Bureau of Land Management to reschedule two lease sales that already have been canceled and block the agency from revoking others in the future.

 

TOWN OF CAMPBELL, Wis. (AP) — Prosecutors in La Crosse County have charged a woman with fleeing from police at speeds of nearly 140 mph on Interstate 90. The La Crosse Tribune reports that 36-year-old Amy Torres of Fargo, North Dakota, was charged Wednesday with attempting to elude an officer, a felony, and misdemeanor counts of possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia. According to the criminal complaint, a town of Campbell police officer was running radar checks on Interstate 90 and clocked Torres traveling west at 119 mph in a 70 mph zone. She reached a speed of 137 mph as she fled from the officer. The chase ended when she ran out of gas on a bridge over the Mississippi River linking Wisconsin and Minnesota.

 

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Officials in western North Dakota will not pursue plans to build a bridge over the Little Missouri River across the property of landowners who objected to the project. The Billings County Commission scrapped the plans on Tuesday after a long dispute. Family members who opposed the bridge had concerns is that it would have drawn oil-related traffic through the property. Proponents of the bridge said it could help emergency responders gain better access to remote parts of the Badlands, as well as benefit the oil industry and tourism.

 

MEDORA, N.D. (AP) — One of two wildfires burning in the Badlands of western North Dakota has closed roads and part of a recreational trail system. Rangers say the fire near the Elkhorn Ranch historic site has grown to about 4.7 square miles, but is about 75% contained. The U.S. Forest Service has closed land in the area, including roads and part of the Maah Daah Hey Trail. The closure spans parts of Billings and Golden Valley counties, the Bismarck Tribune reported. Another blaze, the Sand Creek fire, broke out nearby Monday. That fire, which is northeast of the Elkhorn fire, has grown to 320 acres and is 20% contained.

Jamestown  (CSi)  On July 9th & 10th, the Jamestown area will host the first ever North Dakota Outlaw Fest racing,  on a private airstrip about  18 miles west of Jamestown and then go south of I-94. Take Exit 248 to County Rd. 65, then turn right on 40th Street.

Featured will be Grudge Racing on Friday night with Street Tire, Small Tire, Big Tire, and Jr drags on Saturday, from North Dakota and other states.

Cost for spectators is $10 for Friday and $10 for Saturday with two-day passes available. Ages 12 and under get in free.

Jamestown  (CSi)  The new turf at  The University of Jamestown’s Hansen Stadium at Rollie Greeno Field this week was progressing as part of the stadium’s renovation, expected to be completed in September this year.

The stadium will now include, a nine lane, 400-meter track with new jump and throwing areas.

Other new features include newly installed home side seating including  a the new press box and suite, along with lighting, and parking lot improvements. and  a new videoboard and sound system.

With the stadium renovations at UJ, plus the soon coming Erstad Practice field at Jamestown High School, $9.7 million of funds have been raise, and $2 million from the school district toward the $11.7 million project.

 

NBA FINALS

PHOENIX (AP) — The Phoenix Suns find themselves two wins away from the first NBA championship in team history, and the first major league title for the city since the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.

Devin Booker pumped in 31 points and Mikal (mih-KAYL’) Bridges added 27 as the Suns downed the Milwaukee Bucks, 118-108 to take a two-games-to-none lead in the Finals. Chris Paul chipped in 23 points and eight assists for Phoenix, which took control by outscoring the Bucks, 30-16 in the second quarter to go up by 11.

The Suns shot 20-for-40 from 3-point range, led by Booker’s 7-for-12 from beyond the arc. Paul, Bridges and Jae Crowder each added three treys.

Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo (YAH’-nihs an-teh-toh-KOON’-poh) finished with 42 points and 12 rebounds in his second game back after missing two games with a hyperextended left knee. But Jrue (jroo) Holiday and Khris Middleton combined to shoot just 12-for-37. Holiday finished with 17 points on 7 of 21 from the field. Middleton scored just 11 on 5 of 16 shooting while adding eight assists and six rebounds.

Game 3 is Sunday in Milwaukee.

 

TENNIS-WIMBLEDON

Barty and Pliskova to meet in final

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Ash Barty will face Karolina Pliskova (PLIHSH’-koh-vah) on Saturday in the first Wimbledon women’s final for both.

Barty beat 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 7-6 to become the first woman from Australia to reach the title match at Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong won the trophy 1980. Barty was two points from dropping the second set, 6-2 before holding serve and breaking Kerber twice to force a tiebreak.

Pliskova then advanced by coming back to eliminate second-seeded Aryna Sabalenka 5-7, 6-4, 6-4. Pliskova overcame Sabalenka’s 18 aces with 14 of her own. Pliskova finally broke for a 3-2 lead in the second set and again in the opening game of the third to take control.

This is the first team either player has advanced past the fourth round at Wimbledon. Barty owns the lone Grand Slam title between the two, taking the 2019 French Open.

TENNIS-NADAL

Nadal to make return to competition with debut in DC

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rafael Nadal will return to competition by making his debut at the Citi Open in Washington later this month.

Nadal hasn’t played since his loss to Novak Djokovic (NOH’-vak JOH’-kuh-vich) in the semifinals of the French Open last month. The 35-year-old Spaniard decided to sit out Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics.

The Citi Open is among the hard-court tuneup events leading up to the U.S. Open.

Other players entered in the Citi Open include Wimbledon semifinalists Denis Shapovalov (shah-pah-VAH’-lahv) and Hubert Hurkacz (HUR’-kahts), who beat Roger Federer on Wednesday.

MLB..

— The Twins took advantage of a replay reversal to score three runs in the seventh inning of a 5-3 verdict over the Tigers. Detroit tried to turn a double play in the seventh, but Gilberto Celestino beat the throw to first and replay showed that second baseman Willi Castro pulled his foot off the bag too quickly. Ryan Jeffers and Miguel San   homered off Tigers starter Tarik Skubal (TAR’-ihk SKOO’-bul).

— Brad Miller homered three times for the first time in his career to lead the Phillies’ 8-0 pounding of the Cubs. Miller hit a solo drive in the third inning and added two-run homers in the fifth to finish with five RBIs. Didi Gregorius (DEE’-dee greh-GOHR’-ee-uhs) added a two-run shot and All-Star catcher J.T. Realmuto (ree-al-MOO’-toh) scored on a double-steal as the Phillies took three of four games at Wrigley Field.

 

UNDATED (AP) — Julio Urias (oo-REE’-uhs) picked up his major league-leading 11th win while helping the Los Angeles Dodgers avoid a four-game sweep in Miami.

Urías allowed Jazz Chisholm’s leadoff homer, then pitched shutout ball through the seventh inning of the Dodgers’ 6-1 win over the Marlins. He allowed just five hits and struck out nine in improving to 11-3.

Urias also sparked the Dodgers’ five-run fifth with a leadoff single.

Chris Taylor had two hits and two RBIs for Los Angeles, which owns the second-best record in the National League but is one game behind the West-leading Giants.

There was a great comeback win in another game involving the NL West.

Rookie reliever Daniel Camarena hit a grand slam off Max Scherzer in the fourth inning as the Padres turned an 8-0 deficit into a 9-8 win over the Nationals. Trent Grisham hit an RBI single with two outs in the ninth, allowing San Diego to match the largest comeback win in franchise history.

Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis (tah-TEES’) Jr. homered and stole a base to become the youngest player in baseball history to have 20 homers and 20 steals before the break. Tatis has 28 home runs.

— Jed Lowrie and Matt Olson collected RBIs in the first inning of the Athletics’ 2-1 win over the Astros. Frankie Montas fanned 10 while allowing five hits and a run over 6 2/3 innings, helping Oakland end a three-game skid and avoid a three-game sweep. The A’s halted Houston’s six-game winning streak and dealt Lance McCullers his first loss in 10 starts since April 14.

— The Mariners blanked the Yankees, 4-0 as Logan Gilbert pitched one-hit ball over seven innings in the best start of his young career. Gilbert set a career-high with eight strikeouts and retired his final 18 batters. Kyle Seager and Dylan Moore as Seattle salvaged the finale of the three-game set.

— The Indians ended their nine-game losing streak as Franmil (FRAHN’-meel) Reyes slammed a three-run homer in the ninth inning to complete a 7-4 comeback over the Royals. Kansas City had a 3-1 lead in the eighth until Roberto Hernandez launched a three-run shot. Bobby Bradley also homered for the Indians, whose losing streak was their longest under manager Terry Francona.

 

— The Brewers beat the Reds, 5-3 on Avisaíl (a-vih-sah-EEL’) García’s tiebreaking, two-run home run in the eighth inning. Milwaukee wasted an early 2-0 lead and tied the game on the first of Keston Hiura’s (HEE’-ruhz) two doubles. The Brewers now lead the NL Central by seven games over the Reds.

 

— The Rockies won for just the seventh time in 40 road games as Dom Nunez doubled twice and singled in a 9-3 thumping of the Diamondbacks. Nunez scored twice, drove in a run and drew a walk after carrying a .159 batting average into the game. Winning pitcher Chi Chi Gonzalez provided an RBI single and allowed three earned runs and six hits in five innings.

— The Mets and Pirates were rained out in New York. The game has been rescheduled as part of a Saturday doubleheader and would be the Mets’ 10th twinbill already this season.

— The Blue Jays and Orioles were postponed with Tropical Storm Elsa expected to hit the Baltimore area during the game. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Sept. 11.

Bauer paid leave extended through July 15

UNDATED (AP) — Trevor Bauer’s administrative leave has been extended by seven days through July 15 by Major League Baseball and the players’ association.

MLB investigators continue to look into allegations of sexual misconduct against the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher. Bauer was placed on seven days’ paid leave on July 2.

In other baseball news:

— Astros middle infielders Jose Altuve (al-TOO’-vay) and Carlos Correa (kor-AY-ah) will not play in next week’s All-Star Game after being named reserves for the game in Denver. Altuve cited a left leg issue for his reason to skip the game, and Correa wants to spend time with his wife as they await the birth of their first child.

— Marlins manager Don Mattingly will return for a seventh season in 2022 after the two sides worked out a mutual option in his contract. Mattingly was the NL Manager of the Year after guiding Miami to its first playoff berth in 17 years, but the team is last in the NL East right now.

TOKYO OLYMPICS-NO FANS

Fans banned at Olympics with Tokyo under state of emergency

TOKYO (AP) — Fans will be banned from Tokyo-area stadiums and arenas when the Olympics begin in two weeks.

The city’s governor made the announcement on Thursday after meeting with organizers of the pandemic-postponed games. The Japanese government put the capital under a COVID-19 state of emergency because of rising new infections and the highly contagious delta variant.

It’s a serious blow for Japanese taxpayers and local organizers of the games, which already had been postponed from 2020 by the coronavirus. Hundreds of millions of dollars in ticket revenue will be lost, and that must be made up by the government.

Kyrios to skip Tokyo Olympics

SYDNEY (AP) — Nick Kyrgios (KEER’-ee-ohs) has pulled out of Australia’s Olympic tennis team after Tokyo’s governor confirmed a ban on fans in the city’s stadiums during the games.

Kyrgios posted a statement on social media to announce his withdrawal, citing a need to get healthy and the ban on fans at Tokyo Olympics venues as reasons. The 26-year-old Australian said he wouldn’t want to take an opportunity away from a healthy athlete ready to represent the country.

UNDATED (AP) — Viladimir Tarasenko wants a change of scenery.

A person with knowledge of the situation tells The Associated Press that the St. Louis Blues forward has requested a trade.

Tarasenko has been in and out of the lineup with shoulder injuries since helping the Blues win the Stanley Cup in 2019, scoring seven times in just 34 games. The five-time 30-goal scorer has two years left on his contract at a salary-cap hit of $7.5 million.

Munoz, Hadley top leaderboard

SILVIS, Ill (AP) — Sebastian Munoz closed with five straight birdies for an 8-under 63, turning a solid day into a share of the lead with Chesson Hadley at the PGA’s John Deere Classic.

Hadley played bogey-free and had back-to-back birdies on three occasions. He was helped by making three of his birdies from 25 feet.

Hank Lebioda, Chez Reavie and Camilo Villegas opened with 64s. Lebioda finished one shot out of the playoff last weekend in the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Andrade, Ames share lead

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — Billy Andrade (AN’-drayd) and Stephen Ames shot 5-under 65s to share the first-round lead in the U.S. Senior Open.

Andrade had five birdies and no bogeys on an Omaha Country Club course that dried out after the sun broke through and the wind came up in the afternoon. Ames had seven birdies and two bogeys in the morning session.

LPGA-MARATHON CLASSIC

Hataoka outstanding in taking 1st-round lead

SYLVANIA, Ohio (AP) — Nasa Hataoka flirted with an LPGA record-tying 59 while building a four-stroke lead in the first round of the Marathon Classic in Ohio.

Hataoka settled for a 10-under 61 with pars on the final two holes. Annika Sorenstam is the only player to shoot 59 on the LPGA Tour, accomplishing the feat in 2001.

Hataoka had six straight birdies and added three more in a row on Nos. 5-7 before closing her bogey-free round with the two pars.

Lauren Stephenson is second after a 65.

BOXING-FURY/WILDER

Bout postponed after Fury tests positive for COVID-19

LAS VEGAS (AP) — The anticipated third fight between heavyweight champion Tyson Fury and Deontay Wilder will be postponed, likely until the fall.

A person with knowledge of the situation says Fury has tested positive for COVID-19, pushing back the scheduled July 24 bout in Las Vegas. Fury is 30-0-1 with 21 knockouts, while Wilder has earned 41 of his 42 victories by KO. Wilder has lost just once in 44 matches.

Fury tested positive along with several members of his camp. He was already in the U.S. to complete his final preparations for the bout.

In world and national news….

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) — Tropical Storm Elsa is making its trek up the East Coast early Friday and has sparked tornado warnings in Delaware and New Jersey. The National Hurricane Center says Elsa was located about 5 miles east of Atlantic City, New Jersey, with maximum sustained winds of 50 mph. The tropical storm is expected to continue moving northeast and be over Atlantic Canada by Friday night and Saturday. Elsa has already been blamed for a death in Florida and a damaging tornado in coastal Georgia. A family was rescued Wednesday after their boat drifted off the beach in South Carolina, and forecasters say a tornado was spotted Thursday in North Carolina.

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has unveiled new efforts to help protect voting rights as complaints grow louder from civil rights activists and other Democrats that the White House has not done enough to fight the push from several Republican-led state legislatures to restrict access to the ballot. President Joe Biden met with civil rights leaders in the West Wing on Thursday, while Vice President Kamala Harris announced $25 million in new spending by the Democratic National Committee to support efforts to protect voting access ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The administration is facing a call to “save American democracy.”

 

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says the U.S. military operation in Afghanistan will end on Aug. 31. He delivered an impassioned argument for exiting the nearly 20-year war without sacrificing more American lives even as he bluntly acknowledged there will be no “mission accomplished” moment to celebrate. Biden pushed back against the notion the U.S. mission has failed but also noted that it remains unlikely the government would control all of Afghanistan after the U.S. leaves., He urged the Afghan government and Taliban, which he said remains as formidable as it did before the start of the war, to come to a peace agreement.

 

ROME (AP) — The Vatican says Pope Francis is walking, working and has celebrated Mass at a Rome hospital where he also will deliver his Sunday weekly blessing while recovering from intestinal surgery. The Vatican’s daily medical update said that Francis’ temperature was normal again following the slight fever he ran Wednesday evening, It said Friday that his treatment and recovery at Gemelli hospital was proceeding as planned. The 84-year-old Francis had half of his colon removed last Sunday for what the Vatican said was a “severe” narrowing of his large intestine. The Vatican says he plans to deliver his noontime Sunday blessing from the 10th floor of the hospital, which has a special suite reserved for popes.

 

LEWISTOWN, Ill. (AP) — Officials say three of four inmates who escaped from a county jail in western Illinois have been captured. Authorities say 35-year-old Jesse Davis, 26-year-old Cody Villalobos and 23-year-old Eugene Roets were taken into custody on Thursday following Wednesday’s escape. People were asked to call 911 if they saw 36-year-old Zachary Hart. Fulton County deputies learned of the escape Wednesday night after one inmate went missing from a cell block in the jail in Lewistown, about 210 miles southwest of Chicago. It was later determined that three others also were missing. Officials say Davis was captured in Fulton County, while Villalobos and Roets were captured in adjacent Peoria County.

 

LONDON (AP) — A British police officer has pleaded guilty to murdering a woman who was abducted as she walked home from a friend’s house in south London. He previously admitted kidnapping and raping 33-year-old marketing executive Sarah Everard. The officer, 48-year-old Wayne Couzens, entered a guilty plea to murder during a hearing at London’s Central Criminal Court on Friday. He appeared by video link from Belmarsh high-security prison. Everard’s March 3 disappearance and the subsequent news of her killing caused a nationwide outcry. Other women shared experiences of being threatened, attacked or simply facing the everyday fear of violence when walking alone. Couzens is due to be sentenced during a two-day hearing that starts Sept. 29.
