I hope your week has been safe & good with a little fun.

Sue and I went to Medora with my brother and sister-in-law last week. Theodore Roosevelt National Park is truly one of our North Dakota “jewels”. We enjoyed the friendly people, park, the musical, Teddy Roosevelt Show”, “Legendary, A Campfire Tale” and numerous other things. Medora is one of many ND places to visit with family and friends. See: https://www.ndtourism.com/

NOTE: Garbage containers and racks are only allowed on boulevards temporarily for “garbage pickup”. Please keep your boulevards “clean”. Thank you.

“Participation is Essential to Self Government”. (Union Farmer) The United States is a system of self-government where citizens control, city, state & national through voting and participating. (Union Farmer) Participate in your local government by running for office or serving on committees. Volunteer for a committee by contacting City Hall. If you try serving and find it isn’t for you, you can always resign. Think about it.

Trees need water and many Birch Trees are stressing. Take care of your tree(s) as you can make a difference, thank you.

August 5th, be watching for “The Longest Table”. For details see: http://www.vclongesttable.org/

Thank you to contributors again this week.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A man accused of fatally shooting his mother and a North Dakota police officer after authorities tried to serve him with eviction papers has told a jury he feared for his life and didn’t mean to kill anyone. Forty-two-year-old Salamah Pendleton is facing two counts of murder for the deaths of Lola Moore and Grand Forks police Officer Cody Holte in a May 2020 shootout at an apartment Pendleton shared with Moore. Pendleton said he wanted to surrender to authorities but was traumatized when he saw his mother’s body in the hallway. He said he was aiming for the legs of the officers but his vision was impaired because he wasn’t wearing his glasses. Closing arguments are scheduled Tuesday.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A Minot man is being held on suspicion of murder in the fatal shooting of a woman, Minot Police Department says it received a call just before 5 p.m. Sunday of a woman who had been shot in northwest Minot. Officers arrived to find her dead. A police department statement says the investigation led them to the suspect, a 41-year-old Minot man. Police say they spotted him in a vehicle, and he attempted to flee. He was arrested in northeast Minot after a chase. Police gave no details on a motive or on any relationship between the victim and suspect.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Police say an 18-year-old motorcyclist has died in a crash in Bismarck. Police say an SUV was turning left from Washington Street onto Slate Drive when the motorcycle crashed into the passenger side door around 11 a.m. Sunday. The driver of the motorcycle died. Police did not immediately release the person’s identity. The two people in the SUV did not request medical attention. Sgt. Dustin Miller says speed appeared to be a factor in the crash.

In world and national news…

MIAMI (AP) — The death toll in the Miami-area condominium collapse has climbed to 94. Officials said Monday that 22 people remain unaccounted for. Surfside Mayor Charles Burkett said officials are stepping up security at the site to ensure that recovery crews can preserve personal items for family members of the victims. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said a new round of COVID-19 tests have been administered to local officials after a vaccinated Miami-Dade county commissioner who helped other officials in Surfside announced that he and his chief of staff tested positive for the virus Sunday. She said all rapid tests have come back negative.

LONDON (AP) — British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has confirmed that all remaining lockdown restrictions in England will be lifted in a week despite a sharp rise in coronavirus cases. Johnson said it was “the right moment to proceed” as schools break up for the summer vacation, but urged people to “proceed with caution.” He said although risks of the pandemic remain, legal restrictions will be replaced by a recommendation that people wear masks in crowded places and on public transport. Nightclubs and other venues with crowds should use vaccine passports for entry “as a matter of social responsibility.” Authorities say Britain’s successful vaccine rollout means that nine out of 10 adults in the U.K. now have antibodies against the virus.

LONDON (AP) — Top officials at the World Health Organization say there’s not enough evidence to show that third doses of coronavirus vaccines are needed. They appealed Monday for the scarce shots to be shared with poor countries who have yet to immunize their people instead of being used by rich countries as boosters. At a press briefing, WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the world’s grotesque vaccine disparity was driven by “greed.” He called on drugmakers to prioritize supplying their COVID-19 vaccines to poor countries instead of lobbying rich countries to use even more doses as boosters.

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Democrats in the Texas Legislature are planning to leave the state in another revolt against a GOP overhaul of election laws. A person with knowledge of the decision told The Associated Press that Democrats are set to again break quorum at the Texas Legislature in a dramatic showdown over voting rights in America. In May, Democrats walked out of the Texas Capitol to block a sweeping bill that included bans on 24-hour polling places and provisions to empower partisan poll watchers. It would be the first time since 2003 that Texas Democrats have crossed state lines to break quorum.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Agreements between Iowa and Texas show Iowa is donating the use of state troopers and their equipment at “no cost to Texas” to fight crime along the U.S. border with Mexico. Despite that language, a spokesman for Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds says there still is a chance Texas could eventually pick up the costs after the mission concludes. The agreements show Iowa troopers, tactical officers, command staff and an investigator will be part of the deployment. Iowa officials have said previously they expect to send 25 to 30 officers from the Iowa Department of Public Safety for a two-week mission this month. The agreements show Texas and Arizona asked other states to “absorb the associated costs with this mission” for the good of the country.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The top U.S. commander in Afghanistan has relinquished his position at a ceremony in the capital of Kabul. The move takes the United States a step closer to ending a 20-year military presence that became known as its “forever war.” The transition Monday comes as Taliban insurgents continue to gain territory across the country. Gen. Scott Miller handed over command to Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, the head of U.S. Central Command. McKenzie, also a four-star general, will operate from Central Command headquarters in Tampa, Florida. McKenzie assumes authority to conduct possible airstrikes in defense of Afghan government forces, at least until the U.S. withdrawal concludes by Aug. 31.
