FARGO, N.D. (AP) — An attorney for a man accused in the gruesome killings of four people at a North Dakota property management firm says the case amounts to a rush to judgment based on bad information that led to the wrong conclusion. Forty-seven-year-old Chad Isaak, of Washburn, is accused of killing RJR Maintenance and Management co-owner Robert Fakler and employees Adam Fuehrer, William Cobb and Lois Cobb on April 1, 2019. The business is located in Mandan. Prosecutor Karlei Neufeld said during her opening statements Wednesday that the evidence is like pieces of puzzle that will paint a clear picture of Isaak’s guilt when completed. Defense attorney Bruce Quick countered that police were under pressure to solve the case quickly and overlooked or ignored other possible suspects.

(AP)  Manufacturers from California and North Dakota have announced plans to locate facilities in separate locations in North Carolina, bringing nearly 500 jobs. California pharmaceutical giant Amgen says it plans to build a manufacturing facility in Holly Springs and create more than 350 jobs after it landed an incentive package from the state and local governments on Tuesday. The N.C. Economic Investment Committee says Steffes, a manufacturer of equipment used in oil exploration and agriculture, is investing almost $21 million into updating a facility in Shelby. The initiative will create 130 new jobs between 2021 and 2025.

In sports…

CINCINNATI (AP) — Luis Castillo pitched six effective innings, Tyler Stephenson homered to give the Reds a cushion they ended up needing, and Cincinnati held on to beat the Minnesota Twins 6-5, Wednesday afternoon. Jonathan India had three hits and Joey Votto drove in two runs for the Reds, who came in trailing first-place Milwaukee by 7 1/2 games in the NL Central. Castillo allowed Jorge Polanco’s first-inning solo homer but settled in nicely from there. Stephenson went deep in the seventh to give the Reds a 6-1 lead. Then the Twins rallied with four runs in the eighth before Michael Lorenzen came in for a five-out save.

(VCSU)  Valley City State University interim golf coach Kari Bodine has resigned her coaching position, VCSU athletic director Jill DeVries announced Wednesday.

Bodine will remain on the athletic staff as the assistant for sports information and athletic marketing.

“We thank Kari for leading our golf program for the past two seasons, both of which were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic,” said DeVries. “We’re excited to keep Kari on staff in her expanded role with our sports information department.”

Bodine was named interim head golf coach on July 10, 2019. She guided the men’s and women’s teams during the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season. During the 2020-21 season Jocelyn Braunberger and Rory Gentzkow both earned honorable mention All-Conference for VCSU.

During her two years as golf coach, Bodine also worked in the sports information department, handling a variety of duties related to promotion of the athletic department and its student-athletes. Her role in sports information and marketing will expand going forward.

A search for a new head golf coach is underway.

In world and national news…

GREENVILLE, Calif. (AP) — California’s largest wildfire grew Wednesday as thousands of firefighters prepared for a tougher fight as dangerous weather returns. Firefighters were able to save homes and hold large stretches of the Dixie Fire, but flames jumped perimeter lines in a few spots, prompting additional evacuation orders for some 15,000 people. Dozens of fires are burning throughout the drought-stricken West. The Bootleg Fire in Oregon is 84% contained and firefighters are busy strengthening lines as they face the upcoming extreme weather. The Oregon blaze is the nation’s largest burning wildfire.

(AP) U.S. government forecasters say they expect the Atlantic hurricane season to be busier than they first thought. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration updated its hurricane outlook Wednesday. Forecasters now expect 15 to 21 named storms, with seven to 10 becoming hurricanes. This hurricane season started busy with Elsa forming as the earliest named fifth storm on record, but since then the tropics have been silent. Hurricane season runs through Nov. 30, with peak hurricane season going from mid-August to mid-October.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The Mexican government is suing U.S. gun manufacturers and distributors, arguing that their commercial practices have unleashed tremendous bloodshed in Mexico. The unusual lawsuit was filed in U.S. federal court in Boston. Among those being sued are some of the biggest names in guns. The Mexican government argues that the companies know that their practices contribute to the trafficking of guns to Mexico and facilitate it. Mexico wants compensation for the havoc the guns have wrought in its country. The sale of firearms is severely restricted in Mexico, but thousands of guns are smuggled into Mexico by the country’s powerful drug cartels.

(AP)  The Senate Foreign Relations Committee has voted to finally repeal two decades-old measures giving open-ended approval for military action in Iraq. Wednesday’s vote was 14-8, with three Republicans voting with Democrats. Virginia Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine, who introduced the measure with Republican Sen. Todd Young of Indiana, says he hopes the repeals will go to a vote of the full Senate in coming weeks. The measures had greenlighted the 1991 Persian Gulf War and the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Committee action on their repeal comes during a larger debate about reclaiming more congressional authority on military action from the executive branch.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s legislative leaders are signaling that Gov. Andrew Cuomo could swiftly face an impeachment trial if he doesn’t resign over investigative findings that he sexually harassed at least 11 women. A growing number of prosecutors also are looking at his conduct. The Democratic governor denies that he made any inappropriate sexual advances and insists the findings don’t reflect the facts. But while political pressure grew Wednesday, so did prosecutors’ scrutiny of the third-term governor. District attorneys in Manhattan, suburban Westchester and Nassau counties and the state capital of Albany say they’ve asked for investigative materials from the sexual harassment inquiry. It was led by Democratic state Attorney General Letitia James.

DENVER (AP) — Two Denver lawyers who filed a class action lawsuit about the presidential election are being sanctioned. The attorneys have to pay the legal fees of the numerous defendants they claimed were engaged in a national conspiracy to stop former President Donald Trump from being re-elected. Their lawsuit was dismissed and the judge in the case found it had so little legal merit that he levied sanctions against the lawyers. They had sought $180 billion in damages from public officials in four swing states, Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg and a Denver voting machine company. The lawsuit simply repeated disproven conspiracy theories spread by Trump.
