City  (CCHD)   City County Health District in Valley City is informing businesses in a letter due to increasing COVID-19 Active cases across North Dakota, and the threat of the Delta Variant.  CCHD is providing businesses with an overview and recommendations to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in Barnes County.

Overview:

Today (8-11-21) North Dakota has 860 active cases with a low of 118 in July 2021 and a high of 10,411 in November of 2020.  Barnes County had 8 active cases, a number expected to go up as state numbers rise.

The Delta Variant is estimated to account for 90-percent of active cases in the upper Midwest. Delta spreads more than twice as easily from one person to another, compared to earlier strains.  Vaccination is critical for preventing infection, serious illness, and death associated with COVID-19 infection (including the Delta Variant.

Recommendations:

  1. Get vaccinated and encourage friends, family, and staff to do so. Most vaccinated people are protected from the virus-breakthrough cases occur in only a small portion of vaccinated people and the vast majority are avoiding serious illness, hospitalization, or death.
  2. Keep informed about the COVID numbers at health.nd.gov and at citycountyhealth.org.

How you may help:

Get your vaccine as soon as possible, and encourage staff and friends to visit their primary care provider of City County Health District staff.

Call City County Health to schedule a vaccination clinic at your business.

Call City County Health to schedule staff education.

To help keep your business open you may choose to require your employees to vaccinate.

Every year Prairie Business recognizes companies and organizations that, in part, have been nominated by their peers. Prairie Business magazine also named JRMC a Top 50 Best Place to work in the region in 2018 and 2019. Tues. Aug. 10, 2021 Plane Crash Updates..

Fargo  (NDHP)  On August Tuesday 10, 2021 just before 4:00 p.m., a single engine aircraft struck the top of a tree row and crashed into an adjacent field. The North Dakota Highway Patrol reports, the pilot was identified as Jeffery Kloster of Omaha, NE. suffered serious injuries and was transported to a local hospital. The single engine aircraft had just left the area of the West Fargo Airport. The location of the crash was approximately 1 mile west of West Fargo on 12th Avenue NW, or near 12th Avenue NW/26th Street NW, West Fargo. Weather conditions  were clear with a west wind of about 15 mph.

Strausberg  (NDHP) The North Dakota Highway Patrol has updated the report including the pilot who was killed in the August 1o, 2021 crop duster plan crash.

At approximately 7:40 am a crop spraying aircraft actively
engaged in spraying struck a high voltage transmission line. The impact caused disabling  damage to the aircraft a single engine, 1975 Rockwell International S2R and it crashed into a  nearby field. The pilot 63 year old Michel Gunia of Linton, ND suffered fatal injuries during the  crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Western Area Power Administration  transmission line was severed.

The crash occurred three miles west and three miles south of  Strasburg, ND near the intersection of 7th avenue and 92nd street SE. The crash remains under  investigation by the NDHP and FAA with the assistance of the Emmons County Sheriff’s office.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A jury has reached a verdict in a civil case involving a Fargo hotel and a fatal fight outside its doors. The jury decided The Hotel Donaldson is not responsible for paying damages to the widow of the man who died in the fight and another man who was injured. The case stems from a fight in May 2017 involving Darren Patterson, Jamie Grant and Christopher Sang. Patterson was earlier convicted of throwing punch that killed Grant more than a week later. Sang suffered a traumatic brain injury in the fight. Jenny Grant and Sang sued the hotel for $2.5 million, saying staff there should have known the three men were going to fight after getting kicked out of the bar.

MINOT, N.D. (AP) — A man found guilty of child abuse for assaulting a woman in front of a young girl is appealing his conviction to the North Dakota Supreme Court. Fifty-three-year-old Brent Castleman, of Minot, was convicted last year of child abuse. The woman had secretly recorded the assault and the girl crying after witnessing the attack. The recording was played for the jury during Castleman’s trial. He was convicted of the single child abuse charge and acquitted of second child abuse charge. Castleman argues that there was insufficient evidence for the jury to convict him of Class B felony.

In sports…

In world and national news…

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — California will become the first state in the nation to require all teachers and school staff to get vaccinated or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing. The statewide vaccine mandate for K-12 educators comes as schools return from summer break amid growing concerns of the highly contagious delta variant. Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom announced the new policy Wednesday as he visited a San Francisco Bay Area school that has already reopened after summer break. Several large school districts in the state have issued similar requirements in recent days, including San Francisco, Oakland, San Jose and the Long Beach Unified school districts.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul says she is prepared to lead after Gov. Andrew Cuomo steps down. Hochul gave her first public remarks Wednesday. It came a day after Cuomo’s announcement that he would step down rather than face a likely impeachment trial over allegations that he sexually harassed several women. He denies touching anyone inappropriately. Hochul says she planned to bring in new people to her administration and eliminate anyone “unethical” named in the attorney general’s report on Cuomo. Hochul will become the state’s first female governor when she takes over from Cuomo.

(AP)  The Census Bureau is due to release new data on the changing U.S. population. The numbers scheduled to come out Thursday will show that dozens of counties across 18 states no longer have a majority racial or ethnic group. The states are largely in the South and Southwest. The non-Hispanic white population is expected to shrink for the first census on record. The estimates suggest that about 113 million people — a third of all Americans — now live in plurality counties. The census figures make it clear that virtually all population growth in the U.S. is among people of color, groups long viewed as racial or ethnic minorities.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Tropical Storm Fred has made landfall in the Dominican Republic, with forecasters warning that heavy rains could cause dangerous flooding and mudslides there and in the neighboring country of Haiti. The forecast track would bring it near Florida by the weekend.. After a quiet month in the region, Fred became the sixth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season late Tuesday. Tropical storm warnings have been discontinued for the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, though heavy rains and power outages were reported. Forecasters said Fred’s center could be over the southeastern Bahamas Thursday and north of Cuba on Friday as it approaches the U.S.

GREENVILLE, Calif. (AP) — California’s largest single wildfire in recorded history continued to grow after destroying more than 1,000 buildings, nearly half of them homes, while authorities in Montana ordered evacuations as a wind-driven blaze roared toward several remote communities. The east end of Northern California’s Dixie Fire flared up as winds increased. In southeastern Montana, communities in and around the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation were ordered to evacuate as the Richard Spring Fire grew amid erratic winds. The dangerous fires are among some 100 large blazes burning across 15 states. Most are in the West, where historic drought conditions have left lands parched.

(AP)  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is urging all pregnant women to get vaccinated against COVID-19. The advice comes as hospitals in hot spots around the U.S. see disturbing numbers of unvaccinated mothers-to-be seriously ill with the virus. The CDC recommendation echoes recent guidance from top obstetrician groups. The agency had previously encouraged pregnant women to consider vaccination. Pregnant women run a higher risk of severe illness from the coronavirus. But their vaccination rates are low.
