Her nomination letter said, “I am nominating Ashley not only for amazing patience and kindness she shows the children she teaches, but also because she went out of her way, literally, to make sure my granddaughter received her show uniform in time for her dance performance. I had absent-mindedly failed to order her uniform when her original class was canceled, and my granddaughter was invited to join another dance class, which meant ordering a new uniform. I received the email of the upcoming show and panicked because I realized I did not have her show uniform. I reached out to Ashley speculating that my granddaughter may not be able to perform due to this dilemma. She said, “no problem. I’ll call corporate. Tell them to have it ready and I will make arrangements with corporate to pick it up and deliver it to you for the show.” Corporate is in Brainard, Mn. I was blown away by her willingness to drive from Jamestown to Brainard, so my granddaughter could participate in her first real show! The uniform arrived on time and all was well! Thank you, Ashley for making a five-year-old and this grandma very happy!!!!”

Congratulations to Ashley! The Just for Kix dance program practices at Club 1883. You can check them out at www.justforkix.com.

Customer Service Award nomination forms are available at the Chamber office and on their website at www.jamestownchamber.com or call 701-252-4830.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota’s McKenzie County was the fastest-growing county in the nation as the oil industry fueled a population that more-than doubled over the last decade. Population data from the U.S. Census Bureau showed most of North Dakota’s growth occurred in the western part of the state and in the cities. The trends mean that legislative power will likely shift towards cities as a Republican-led committee shapes legislative districts this year.

UNDATED (AP) — It was a Hollywood ending in a Hollywood ballpark.

The Chicago White Sox won the Field of Dreams game in Dyersville, Iowa, blowing a 7-4 lead in the ninth before Tim Anderson slammed a two-run, walk-off homer in a 9-8 win over the New York Yankees.

Anderson was able to ease the pain of Liam Hendricks, who served up two-run homers by Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton into the cornfield with two out in the ninth to put the Yankees ahead, 8-7.

Yankees starter Andrew Heaney didn’t come close to going the distance, surrendering seven runs over five innings. Eloy (ee-LOY’) Jimenez belted a three-run homer off Heaney, Jose Abreu hit a solo shot and Seby Zavala (SEH’-bee zah-VAH’-lah) smacked a two-run blast that put the White Sox ahead, 7-3 in the fourth inning.

Judge homered twice and had five RBIs for the Yankees in front of about 7,800 in a replica stadium of the original used in Field of Dreams, built adjacent to the actual ballpark.

Meanwhile, add another game to the Tampa Bay Rays’ lead in the AL East as they won the rubber match of their three-game set with the second-place Red Sox at Fenway Park.

Wander Franco hit a tiebreaking two-run homer in the sixth inning to spark the Rays’ 8-1 win over the Bosox. Mike Zunino added a three-run homer in the eighth to ensure Tampa Bay leaves Boston with a five-game division lead.

Kevin Kiermaier went 3 for 3 with a walk and scored twice for the Rays, who rebounded from a blowout loss a night earlier.

Drew Rasmussen threw four strong innings in a spot start for Tampa Bay.

In Thursday’s other major league action:

— Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) worked six innings and sparked a four-run second in the Angels’ 6-3 win over the Blue Jays. Ohtani doubled in the first inning and later scored a run following a base-on-balls in the second. Jared Walsh and Kurt Suzuki drove in two runs apiece to back Ohtani, who hasn’t lost in 10 starts since May.

— The Athletics easily picked up their seventh straight win as Mitch Moreland homered twice in a 17-0 dismantling of the Indians. Matt Canha (KAN’-ah) and Starling Marte each drove in three runs, while teammate Matt Chapman walked five times to fall one shy of the big league record. Chris Bassitt scattered three hits over six innings for his AL-leading 12th win, helping Oakland move a season-high 18 games over .500.

— The Mariners picked up a 3-1 victory over the Rangers behind Marco Gonzales, who struck out nine in a two-hitter. Gonzales allowed Charlie Culberson’s homer in the second inning, followed by Jason Martin’s single before facing the minimum over the final seven innings. J.P. Crawford and Jake Fraley homered for Seattle.

— Luis Urias (oo-REE’-uhs) and Manny Pina (PEEN’-yah) were the catalysts as the Brewers clobbered the Cubs, 17-4. Urias tied a major league record with five extra-base hits, including three doubles and home runs in the seventh and ninth innings. Pina provided six RBIs with a grand slam and a two-run homer to help the NL Central leaders complete a four-game sweep.

— Jesse Winker launched a grand slam in the second inning before the Reds added four more homers in a 12-3 thumping of the Braves. Tyler Naquin (NAY’-kwihn) delivered a three-run shot to help Cincinnati end a three-game skid and stay eight games behind the Brewers. Vladimir Gutiérrez gave up one run and five hits in six innings as the Reds dropped the Braves one game behind the NL East-leading Phillies.

— Pavin Smith was 3-for-5 with four RBIs for the Diamondbacks in a 12-3 rout of the Padres. Carson Kelly and Jose Rojas each had four hits and two ribbies to back Caleb Smith, who held the Padres to an unearned run over 5 1/3 innings of relief. San Diego is 3 1/2 games ahead of the Reds for the first NL wild card.

— The Phillies avoided a three-game sweep as Bryce Harper hit a first-inning homer and scored on an RBI single by Ronald Torreyes (toh-RAY’-ehs) in leading a 2-1 win over the Dodgers. Philadelphia has gone 23-13 while Harper has batted .328 with eight homers, 23 RBIs and 28 runs scored over his last 36 games. Ian Kennedy escaped a bases-loaded jam by getting Billy McKinney to hit a game-ending fly ball.

— The Giants’ pace the NL West by five games over the Dodgers after San Francisco put together a six-run fourth in a 7-0 drubbing of the Rockies. Logan Webb provided a two-run single and held Colorado to three hits while fanning eight over six innings. LaMonte (lah-MAHNT’) Wade’s three-run homer capped the Giants’ big fourth inning as they improved to an MLB-leading 74-41.

— The Mets are within a half-game of the NL East-leading Phillies after sweeping two from the Nationals, 4-1 and 5-4. Brandon Nimmo drove in four runs in the opener to support Marcus Stroman, who struck out eight while allowing a run and just three hits over 5 1/3 innings. New York blew a 4-1 lead in the last inning of the nightcap before Pete Alonso won it with a walk-off homer.

— Paul DeJong (deh-YUHNG’) and Lars Nootbaar homered in the fourth inning before the Cardinals hung on to beat the Pirates, 7-6 for a three-game sweep. St. Louis received seven innings of three-run ball from its bullpen after starter Wade LeBlanc exited with left elbow pain. Colin Moran homered twice for the Pirates, who have been outscored 50-18 during an eight-game losing streak.

— The Tigers were 6-4 winners over the Orioles as Renato Núñez homered in his return to Baltimore. Winning pitcher Matt Manning allowed three runs and eight hits in six innings for Detroit. Tigers designated hitter Miguel Cabrera sat out the game a night after belting his 499th career home run.

Cubs release Arrieta

UNDATED (AP) — Right-hander Jake Arrieta has been released by the Cubs.

The Cubs also placed catcher Willson Contreras on the 10-day injured list because of sprained right knee.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-NEWS

Pac-12 says forfeits possible for COVID-19 issues

UNDATED (AP) — Pac-12 teams that cannot play because of COVID-19 issues will likely be forced to forfeit games this season.

The conference announced it is reinstituting its forfeiture policy after it modified its rules last season because of the pandemic.

Last season, a game that could not be played because of COVID-19 problems with either team was canceled and deemed no contest.

In other college football news:

— Florida cornerback and projected starter Jaydon Hill will miss the season after tearing the ACL in his left knee. Hill started five games last season and had been slotted to play opposite Kaiir Elam, who tied for the Southeastern Conference lead with 13 pass defenses in 2020. The Gators ranked 100th out of 127 in pass defense last season, one reason why head coach Dan Mullen calls the injury a “massive disappointment.”

NBA-NEWS

Leonard re-signs with Clippers

UNDATED (AP) — Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard is staying put, although his return to the Los Angeles Clippers’ lineup is uncertain.

The Clippers have re-signed their free-agent superstar, one week after he opted out of his $36 million option for the upcoming season. Leonard has averaged 26 points, 6.8 rebounds and five assists in his first two seasons with his hometown team.

He suffered a partially torn right ACL during the playoffs and missed the Clippers’ first Western Conference finals appearance. Leonard had surgery on his knee a month ago. His status for the upcoming season is unknown, and it’s possible he could miss a good portion of it while rehabbing.

Also in the NBA:

— The Denver Nuggets have added to their outside arsenal by signing veteran forward Jeff Green to a two-year, $10 million contract. Green shot a career-best 41.2% from 3-point range for the star-studded Nets last season, averaging 11.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists in 68 games. In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. health regulators have authorized an extra dose of the Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines in people with weakened immune systems to better protect them from the virus. The announcement Thursday by the Food and Drug Administration applies to millions of Americans who take immune-suppressing medicines because of organ transplants, cancer or other disorders. The decision does not apply to otherwise healthy individuals. Health authorities are closely monitoring if and when the general population will need a booster shot but say for now, the vaccines continue to be highly effective in most healthy people.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon volunteers are scrambling to hand out water to homeless people in Portland’s isolated encampments as the Pacific Northwest sweats through a heat wave that is gripping the normally temperate region. Authorities trying to provide relief to vulnerable people are mindful of a record-shattering heat wave in June that killed hundreds in Oregon, Washington and British Columbia. In Portland, temperatures Thursday reached 103 degrees, and more heat was expected Friday. In Seattle, highs were predicted to again reach the 90s in a region where many don’t have air conditioning and people are unaccustomed to extreme heat.

LAME DEER, Mont. (AP) — Wildfires in Montana and California are threatening rural towns and ranchland while the West sees a continuing bout of dangerously hot, dry weather. In Montana, firefighters are scrambling to save hundreds of homes near the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation. The Richard Spring Fire there has prompted evacuation orders for thousands of people and is also threatening grasslands that are crucial for cattle ranchers. In California, the Dixie Fire that virtually destroyed the Sierra Nevada town of Greenville is less than a third surrounded. Fire officials say Northern California will see dangerous fire weather Friday, including a chance of lightning storms.

HAVANA (AP) — Forecasters say tropical depression Fred is slowly strengthening and could regain tropical storm status Friday. The U.S. National Hurricane Center says the system is moving along the northern coast of Cuba on a forecast track toward Florida. Maximum sustained winds are around 35 mph with higher gusts. A tropical storm warning has been issued for the Florida Keys and Florida Bay. A tropical storm watch is in effect for parts of Cuba and the southwest coast of Florida. Fred became a tropical storm on Tuesday but weakened to a depression as it spun over Haiti and the Dominican Republic, where it knocked out power to some 400,000 customers and caused flooding.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — A new fire has broken out on Greece’s island of Evia but south from the area where a massive wildfire decimated forests, torched homes and still smoldered 10 days after it started. Greece’s fire department said four water-dropping aircraft and six helicopters were sent to control the new fire in central Evia, along with 23 firefighters and 10 vehicles. The larger fire that broke out on Aug. 3 destroyed most of the island’s north and is one of the country’s worst known forest fires. Although wildfires are common in Greece during the hot, dry summers, hundreds of blazes have ignited across the country this year following an especially long and intense heat wave.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have captured another three provincial capitals in Afghanistan, completing their sweep of the country’s south. The lightning offensive is gradually encircling Kabul, just weeks before the U.S. is set to officially end its two-decade war. The latest significant blow was the loss of the capital of Helmand province on Friday. American, British and allied NATO forces fought some of the bloodiest battles there in the past 20 years. The insurgents have taken 18 of the country’s 34 provincial capitals in recent days. That includes the country’s second- and third-largest cities, Herat and Kandahar. The Taliban now control more than two-thirds of Afghanistan just weeks before the U.S. plans to withdraw its last troops.

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s prime minister says he is working urgently with the United States to evacuate the last Afghans who helped Australian troops and diplomats as Taliban insurgents make rapid territorial gains across Afghanistan. Australia shut its Kabul embassy in May and withdrew the last of its troops in June as U.S. and NATO forces pulled out of the Afghanistan conflict after 20 years. Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Australia since April has resettled 400 Afghans and their families who would be in danger from the Taliban because they had worked for Australia. Morrison did not say how many more Afghans will be resettled in Australia.

SINGAPORE (AP) — World stocks are mostly rising ahead of more economic releases that could hint at how the delta variant is affecting growth. France, Germany and Britain all opened higher Friday. Futures for the broad S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average inched higher as well. Traders are digesting U.S. economic releases and tracking the recovery of world’s largest economy. Heads will turn to Europe and Asia next week. On the schedule is eurozone and U.K. inflation data, as well as second quarter performance of the eurozone economy.
