Bismarck  (ND Aeronautics Commission)  North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports posted a total of 92,922 airline passenger boardings
during the month of July. This month experienced the highest level of passenger traffic that the state has seen since the Covid-19 pandemic began and continues the monthly positive trend of growing airline passenger demand. Multiple airports within the state have also reached or are close to reaching prepandemic passenger demand levels.

One example of the extraordinary ongoing airline passenger recovery can be seen at the Hector International Airport in Fargo which is the state’s largest commercial service airport. This past month, the airport provided service for 42,871 passenger boardings which is only 1% lower than their month of July
passenger record of 43,437 that was set in 2019.

Executive Director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission Kyle Wanner says, ” The July airline boarding numbers have exceeded our expectations and we are excited to see multiple airports within the state have reached or are close to reaching pre-pandemic demand levels.” We hope that the demand for air travel is sustained and continues to trend in a positive direction as we move into the next half of 2021.”

Jamestown July 2021 Boardings were 1275, compared to the 488 in 2020, and 6344 in 2019.

Year to date, in July 2021 Jamestown boardings were 5818 compared to 3373 in 2020 an increase of 72-percent.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (AP) — A child has been taken to a hospital after falling from a window in Grand Forks. Police said in a news release late Saturday night that officers were called to an address on the city’s northeast side a little before 8:30 p.m. for a report of a small child who had fallen from a third-story apartment window. BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State transportation workers are getting set to begin mowing areas along state highways this week. The Bismarck Tribune reports mowing will begin Monday and focus on weeds and areas where hay has been collected. State Department of Transportation Director Wayde Swenson says typical summer mowing has been delayed to give property owners more time to collect hay during the drought. Fall mowing will begin Sept. 7 and include all remaining areas along state highways. Adjacent landowners who plan to mow non-interstate ditches for hay should do it before the state mows the areas.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — Gov. Doug Burgum has signed an order aimed at helping livestock producers battle extreme drought conditions across North Dakota. The order waives hours of service restrictions for drivers of commercial vehicles that are transporting hay, water and livestock. Producers have been forced to sell off parts of their herds or supplement their supplies because they’re running short on water and feed. The order allows commercial haulers to move additional food and water that producers need to maintain their herds and make it easier for ranchers to move their herds. The latest picture from the U.S. Drought Monitor rates 46% of the state in extreme drought and 38% in severe drought.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — State officials say production of oil and gas in North Dakota is holding steady. The latest figures released Friday show the state’s oil production from May to June has plateaued at about 1.1 million barrels per day for both months. State Mineral Resources Director Lynn Helms characterizes the Bakken as a “sleeping giant.” The coronavirus pandemic put the industry to sleep and its struggling to wake up. The state’s oil production has recovered somewhat from last summer’s lows amid the coronavirus pandemic, but it’s far from the record 1.5 million barrels per day produced in late 2019.

NASCAR-BRICKYARD 200

A different AJ wins at Brickyard

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — AJ Allmendinger took advantage of two frightening multi-car crashes in the final five laps to win the Brickyard 200 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Making only his second NASCAR Cup start of the season, the 39-year-old Allmendinger raced to his second career Cup victory and gave Kaulig Racing its first win in only the organization’s seventh series start.

But the 0.929-second victory over Ryan Blaney in the first Cup race on the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course was marred by two huge pileups that brought out red flags. Pole-sitter William Byron went over the curbing in the fifth turn and was sent off the course. Eight more drivers quickly followed him, immediately bringing out a yellow and eventually a red flag. A second wreck involved seven cars, but NASCAR reported no injuries.

In world and national news…

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Thousands are packing into the Afghan capital’s airport, rushing the tarmac and pushing onto planes in desperate attempts to flee the country after the Taliban overthrew the Western-backed government. U.S. troops have fired warning shots as they struggled to manage the chaotic evacuation. The Taliban swept into Kabul on Sunday after President Ashraf Ghani fled the country. That brought a stunning end to a two-decade campaign in which the U.S. and its allies had tried to transform Afghanistan. The country’s Western-trained security forces collapsed or fled in the face of an insurgent offensive that tore through the country in just over a week. In the capital Monday, a tense calm set in, with most people hiding in their homes. The Taliban deployed fighters at major intersections.

WASHINGTON (AP) — America’s top general says the United States could now face a rise in terrorist threats from a Taliban-run Afghanistan. That warning comes as intelligence agencies charged with anticipating those threats face new questions after the U.S.-backed Afghan military collapsed with shocking speed. The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Mark Milley, told senators on a briefing call Sunday that U.S. officials are expected to alter their earlier assessments about the pace of terrorist groups reconstituting in Afghanistan. That’s according to a person familiar with the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity.

JERUSALEM (AP) — Air raid sirens have sounded in southern Israel after a rocket was fired from the Gaza Strip. The Israeli military said Monday that one rocket launch that was intercepted by aerial defense. That comes at a tense time, after Palestinian health officials said four Palestinians were killed in a shootout with Israeli troops in the West Bank. The Israeli Border Police said troops involved in the arrest of a suspect “came under heavy fire from close range” by gunmen and the Israeli soldiers returned fire. No officers were injured, it said. The Palestinian news agency, WAFA, said four men were killed by Israeli fire and a fifth was seriously wounded.

LES CAYES, Haiti (AP) — Many of the Haitians injured during a powerful earthquake over the weekend are lying in the open, under burning heat, waiting for help as hospitals overflow with patients. Thousands more in the quake zone are sleeping outside for a second night, clutching small transistor radios tuned to the news. Officials have raised the death toll from Saturday’s earthquake to at least 1,297. And the devastation could soon worsen. Tropical Depression Grace is predicted to reach Haiti on Monday night, bringing the potential for heavy rain, flooding and landslides. The country’s Civil Protection Agency says the magnitude 7.2 earthquake also left at least 5,700 people injured.

QUINCY, Calif. (AP) — Thousands of homes remain threatened by the nation’s largest wildfire in Northern California, and firefighters across the West face a high danger of new blazes erupting because of unstable weather. Thunderstorms haven’t produced much rain, instead whipping up high winds and dry lightning strikes across the northern Sierra. That’s where 6,000 firefighters are trying to contain the month-old Dixie Fire amid extreme heat, with temperatures topping 100 degrees. More than 100 large wildfires are burning in more than a dozen states across the West. The regioin is being seared by drought and bone-dry weather that has turned forests, brushlands, meadows and pastures into tinder.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration has approved a significant and permanent increase in the levels of food stamp assistance available to needy families—the largest single increase in the program’s history. Starting in October, average benefits for food stamps (officially known as the SNAP program) will rise more than 25 percent above pre-pandemic levels. The increased assistance will be available indefinitely to all 42 million SNAP beneficiaries.
