Bismarck (ND Aeronautics Commission) North Dakota’s eight commercial service airports posted a total of 92,922 airline passenger boardings
during the month of July. This month experienced the highest level of passenger traffic that the state has seen since the Covid-19 pandemic began and continues the monthly positive trend of growing airline passenger demand. Multiple airports within the state have also reached or are close to reaching prepandemic passenger demand levels.
One example of the extraordinary ongoing airline passenger recovery can be seen at the Hector International Airport in Fargo which is the state’s largest commercial service airport. This past month, the airport provided service for 42,871 passenger boardings which is only 1% lower than their month of July
passenger record of 43,437 that was set in 2019.
Executive Director of the North Dakota Aeronautics Commission Kyle Wanner says, ” The July airline boarding numbers have exceeded our expectations and we are excited to see multiple airports within the state have reached or are close to reaching pre-pandemic demand levels.” We hope that the demand for air travel is sustained and continues to trend in a positive direction as we move into the next half of 2021.”

TORONTO (AP) — The Canadian government will soon require all air travelers and passengers on interprovincial trains to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Transport Minister Omar Alghabra says that includes all commercial air travelers, passengers on trains between provinces and cruise ship passengers. The government is also requiring vaccinations for all federal public servants in the country. The Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs Dominic Leblanc noted the federal government is the largest employer in the country. Leblanc says it is the government’s duty to guarantee the safety of their employees and those who they serve. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau plans to call an election on Sunday for Sept. 20.
(AP) A top county official says there are no available pediatric intensive care beds in the Dallas area, with hospitals overwhelmed by a surge in coronavirus cases. Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins says ICU beds for children are at capacity in the 19-county area in and around Dallas. If a parent is seeking care for a sick or injured child, Jenkins says the child will wait for another child to die or be flown to Temple or Oklahoma City to find a bed. This week, Jenkins signed an executive order requiring masks be worn inside schools, county buildings and businesses after a judge granted a temporary restraining order against Gov. Greg Abbott’s executive order banning such mandates.
MOSCOW (AP) — Russia has reported a new daily record for COVID-19 fatalities. The Russian government’s coronavirus task force on Friday reported 22,277 new confirmed cases and 815 deaths, the highest daily toll of the pandemic. Meanwhile, Moscow’s Health Department says deaths of all causes in the capital increased 60% in July compared to the same month a year earlier. They included 6,583 coronavirus-related deaths, which corresponds to a COVID-19 mortality rate of 3.95%. Health officials blamed the increase on COVID-19 deaths on the more contagious delta variant and unusually hot weather that exacerbated coronavirus-induced complications. Russia’s vaccination drive has lagged behind other nations. As of a week ago, 20% of the population was fully vaccinated.
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — New York’s top Democrat in the Assembly said Friday that his chamber will suspend its impeachment investigation into Gov. Andrew Cuomo once he steps down. Cuomo announced his upcoming resignation on Tuesday, days after he faced increasing pressure to resign or face ouster by the Democratic-controlled Legislature. The state attorney general last week released an independent investigation that found Cuomo sexually harassed at least 11 women. Cuomo is scheduled to step down the week after next. Speaker Carl Heastie said the Assembly Judiciary Committee had heard from its lawyers that it can’t impeach and remove an elected official no longer in office.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal judge is refusing landlords’ request to put the Biden administration’s new eviction moratorium on hold, though she ruled that the freeze is illegal. U.S. District Judge Dabney Friedrich says her “hands are tied” by an appellate ruling from the last time courts considered the evictions moratorium in the spring. Alabama landlords who are challenging the moratorium are likely to appeal her Friday ruling. Friedrich wrote that the new temporary ban on evictions the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention imposed last week is substantially similar to the version she ruled was illegal in May.
WASHINGTON (AP) — A military base in Washington has been placed on lockdown after a report that an armed person was spotted on the grounds after local police said shots were heard on streets near the base and a gunman ran onto the grounds. Joint Base Anacostia-Bolling posted a note on its Facebook page Friday that the base was being placed on lockdown. The notice said the person was spotted on the south side of the base. The naval support facility at the north end of the base is used by Marine Helicopter Squadron One, the fleet of green helicopters that carry the president and vice president.
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — Temperatures are expected to soar to triple digits again in Portland, Oregon, and Seattle as a heat wave bakes the Pacific Northwest. Forecasters say hot weather and wildfire smoke will pose a problem through the weekend. An air quality alert has been issued through Saturday night for much of northwestern Washington because of smoke drifting in from blazes in the eastern part of the state and British Columbia. Temperatures reached 103 degrees Thursday in Portland, while Bellingham, Washington, hit an all-time record high of 100 degrees and Seattle was the 90s. An excessive heat warning is in effect for much of the usually temperate Northwest through Saturday.
