Jamestown  (CSi) On August 27th, an unusually eye-catching vehicle will be parked in the Hugo’s parking lot west of St. John’s Church. Between 11 AM and

1 PM, “RVG” or “Ruthless Vote Getter” will make a stop in Jamestown, before continuing to

Valley City.

The vehicle is a purple 28’ RV that tours the country educating voters about the 28th

Amendment, the Equal Rights Amendment. The vehicle, which is operated by Vote Equality US,

sports signatures from supporters of the amendment, collected throughout the country.

Vote Equality US is a nonpartisan grassroots effort promoting equal rights for all Americans by

working to ensure the addition of the fully-ratified 28th Amendment (Equal Rights) to the United

States Constitution. The 28th Amendment reads: Equality of rights under the law shall not be

denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on account of sex.

The RVG’s Midwest tour will kick off on August 15th. The North Dakota stops are sponsored by

the North Dakota Women’s Network (NDWN). The Jamestown chapter of the NDWN is

organizing the August 27th event.

The tour is meant to present a nonpartisan message of gender equality directly to voters in order

to ensure the issue of gender equality is prioritized in daily conversations and on major party

platforms. Until the 28th Amendment is fully ratified, the United States Constitution does not

guarantee gender equality. One hundred and sixty eight international constitutions include gender

equality. The amendment was first introduced in 1923.

The Vote Equality US Ruthless Vote Getter RV will be in the Jamestown Hugo’s parking lot

west of St. John’s Church from 11 AM to 1 PM on August 27th. Follow the tour progress here:

https://voteequality.us/tour/2021-midwest-tour/ and on social media at @VoteEqualityUS.

Itinerary is subject to change based on COVID-19 concerns or restrictions.

Vote Equality US’s mission is to increase awareness that gender equality is not in the U.S.

Constitution and inspire support for gender equality leaders.

In sports…

Saturday

(UJ)  The University of Jamestown women’s soccer team opened the 2021 season with a 2-0 victory over Graceland (Iowa) University Saturday afternoon at Jimmie Turf Field.

BOX SCORE

HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Jimmies (1-0-0) maintained possession in the offensive zone for the majority of the first half, getting nine total shots, including six on goal, against Yellowjacket goalkeeper Jazmean Lopez. Claire Struble (SR/Murrieta, Calif.) (2), Natalia Rodriguez (SR/Camarillo, Calif.), and Briana Perry (SR/Las Vegas, Nev.) all put shots on target within the first 15 minutes. Graceland (0-1-0) found some offensive footing inside of 10 minutes before the break, but an attempt by Rhiannon O’Looney went wide of the right post, and Talia Martinez and Elizabeth Falle both had shots turned aside by Jimmie keeper Alex Nowka (JR/Anchorage, Alaska).

In the second half, Graceland began by mounting pressure against the Jimmie defense, but were unable to get a shot on target until the 87th minute. Eventually Jamestown was able to break through the Yellowjacket back line, and in the 62nd minute, Cassandra Diaz (JR/Montebello, Calif.) slotted home a nice pass from Kamryn Fiscus (JR/Yakima, Wash.) for a 1-0 UJ lead. A shot by Aubree Gessel (SO/Temecula, Calif.) in the 66th minute went just wide left, and a brilliant team save by Graceland on a Fiscus shot in the 68th kept the Jimmies from extending their lead. Following a corner kick by Perry in the 85th minute, Fiscus finally found the back of the net and a crucial insurance goal just over five minutes from time.

Nowka made three saves for Jamestown while Lopez had eight stops before coming off in the 69th minute.

GAME NOTES:
Saturday’s win was the second straight season UJ opened with Graceland. The Jimmies defeated the Yellowjackets 2-1 on September 5 last year in Lamoni, Iowa…Jamestown finished with 18 shots overall and 12 on target, the most since putting 13 on target March 17 at Presentation (S.D.)…Head coach Nick Becker won his 97th match, extending his UJ all-time wins record…The goal by Diaz was her fifth career tally, while Fiscus scored for the 19th time in her career, which is the most among current Jimmie players…Jamestown recorded its fourth clean sheet in its last six matches, outscoring opponents 15-3 during that span.

UP NEXT:
The Jimmies have an exhibition match against NCAA Division II Northern State (S.D.) in Aberdeen on August 27 before beginning a stretch of six straight road matches at the Olivet Nazarene Labor Day Tournament in Bourbonnais, Ill., on September 4. UJ plays the host Tigers on the 4th, then take on Governors State University on September 6.

PGA-NORTHERN TRUST

Tuesday golf possible at Northern Trust

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (AP) — There’s a chance the rain-delayed Northern Trust could spill into Tuesday.

In a memo sent to players Sunday night, PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said he is amending the bad weather guidelines to allow for a Tuesday finish regardless of how much golf is played Monday.

Monahan cited the importance and the sequential nature of the FedEx Cup playoffs in making an exception to the guidelines.

The tour said spectators would not be allowed for the final round because of some 6 inches of rain that had left walking routes impassable by Sunday night.

In world and national news…

WESTERLY, R.I. (AP) — The tropical depression Henri appears to be lingering in the Northeast, raising the prospect it will bring sustained rains and cause major flooding inland. The National Weather Service says the system is expected to stall Monday near the Connecticut-New York state line before moving east across New England. The agency says Henri could drop an additional 1 to 3 inches of rain Monday. That could possibly lead to flooding in some areas. Henri was a hurricane at one point before it made landfall in Rhode Island. It was downgraded to a tropical storm and is now a depression.

WAVERLY, Tenn. (AP) — A sheriff in Tennessee says at least 22 people are dead any many are missing after record-setting rain caused devastating flooding that swept away homes. A Facebook page from officials in Waverly listed about 40 missing people Sunday afternoon. Humphreys County Sheriff Chris Davis said many of the missing were from neighborhoods hit hardest by Saturday’s flash flood. The dead ranged in age from young children to elderly people and included the foreman at country star Loretta Lynn’s ranch. Up to 17 inches of rain fell in less than 24 hours, which set a new one-day record for rainfall in Tennessee.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nine moderate House Democrats are trying to upend leaders’ plans for enacting President Joe Biden’s multitrillion-dollar domestic agenda. This week, they face a showdown. The nine are outnumbered and their party’s most powerful leaders are against them — Biden and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Top Democrats want the House to quickly approve a budget resolution setting up future passage of legislation directing $3.5 trillion at safety net and environment programs. But the moderates are threatening to oppose the budget unless the House first approves a $1 trillion infrastructure package. And they have enough votes to block its approval in the narrowly divided chamber.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden says the U.S.-led evacuation of Americans, at-risk Afghans and others from Kabul has accelerated, but he is not ruling out extending it beyond the Aug. 31 deadline he set prior to the Taliban’s stunning takeover of the country. Speaking at the White House on Sunday, Biden said no Afghans are being flown directly to the United States without prior screening. A White House official says about 5,100 people were evacuated in a 12-hour period Sunday using U.S. and coalition aircraft. Tens of thousands remain to join the airlift, which has been slowed by security issues and U.S. bureaucracy hurdles.

TOKYO (AP) — Japan is sending three military aircraft to Afghanistan to evacuate Japanese citizens and local staff as security deteriorates following the Taliban takeover. Defense Minister Nobuo Kishi says the planes will pick up Japanese nationals and Afghans who worked for the Japanese Embassy and development agencies. Japan closed its Kabul embassy on Aug. 15 and set up a temporary office in neighboring Turkey two days later, but local employees at the embassy and other Japan-related organizations remain in Afghanistan. Kishi declined to say how many people will be evacuated, citing security reasons.

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is set to end his decade as New York’s governor Monday when Lt. Gov. Kathy Hochul takes over in a transfer that will break another glass ceiling for women in state politics. The transition between Democrats comes just under two weeks after Cuomo announced he would resign rather than face a likely impeachment battle over sexual harassment allegations. Cuomo had planned to run for a fourth term next year. Instead he is to leave office at 11:59 p.m. Hochul will become New York’s first female governor when she takes her oath in private moments after midnight.
