Bismarck (CSi) – A new identity-theft scam is circulating to North Dakotans.
Job Service North Dakota has received multiple reports of residents receiving text messages telling them they have successfully changed their password on their North Dakota UI ICE profile – regardless of whether they have an Unemployment Insurance claim or UI ICE account or not.
The message could read things like:
- “Someone has tried to login to your UI ICE profile. If this was not you, Please reply stop.”
- “Congratulations! You have successfully changed your UI ICE password! If this was not you, Please reply stop.”
- “You have successfully changed your PASSWORD on your North Dakota UI ICE profile from a NEW DEVICE in (other location). If this was not you, Please reply stop.”
Users, who reply ‘stop’ thinking they are removing themselves from danger are actually exposing themselves to identity theft.
Replying ‘stop’ prompts users to login to a realistic-looking faked site which asks for personally identifying information including address, social security number, email, phone number, and driver’s license number.
“It is highly unlikely scammers could use this information to access any UI ICE accounts because we have a number of strong fraud prevention measures in place,” said Bryan Klipfel, executive director of Job Service North Dakota. “But this is a clear attempt to steal identities by posing as a state agency and that information can be used in millions of other places to defraud people.”
The public is urged not to open or reply to these messages, and to delete or report them to law enforcement. When Job Service North Dakota sends a text message, it will not contain any links.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakota wildlife officials say a disease in white-tailed deer that last year prompted refunds to thousands of hunters is once again showing up in some areas of the state. Epizootic hemorrhagic disease is commonly known as EHD. It is a viral disease transmitted by biting gnats. Officials say the hardest-hit area appears to be within a 20-mile radius of the Bismarck-Mandan area with localized outbreaks elsewhere. Last year the state offered license refunds to more than 9,000 deer hunters. Officials monitored the outbreak for about two weeks before deciding on the refunds. The Bismarck Tribune reports that a similar scenario is setting up for this year.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — Troopers arrested 69 people outside Gov. Tim Walz’s residence in St. Paul in a protest against an oil pipeline replacement project. The Minnesota State Patrol says demonstrators at Saturday’s gathering were booked into the Ramsey County Jail under several charges, including third-degree riot, disorderly conduct and felony threats of violence. The demonstrators are calling for Walz and President Joe Biden to shut down the Enbridge Line 3 project that carries oil from Alberta, Canada and passes through North Dakota and northern Minnesota on its way to Superior, Wisconsin. The 337-mile segment in Minnesota is the last phase in construction. Opponents of the project say construction would destroy land that is protected by treaty agreements and would violate cultural and religious rights.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — Health officials across five states have linked 178 virus cases to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. In the three weeks since the rally kicked off, coronavirus cases in South Dakota have shot up at a startling pace. State health officials have reported 63 cases among rallygoers from South Dakota so far. The epicenter of the rally, Meade County, is reaching a per capita rate that’s similar to the hardest-hit states of the South. Health experts say the pandemic fallout from the rally won’t be seen for weeks and an exact case count will likely remain unknown. But they’re worried that large gatherings across the Upper Midwest will feed a fresh wave of the virus.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt says a 12-state law enforcement operation rescued 47 victims of human trafficking and led to the arrest of more than 100 people. Schmitt said most of the arrests were made Thursday night into Friday morning. The effort, called Operation United Front, used undercover officers who arranged to meet potential human trafficking victims or who posed as victims to identify a buyer or trafficker. In Missouri, two arrests were made and four victims were rescued at a Kansas City business. The operation was conducted in Missouri, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas and Wisconsin.

MLB-METS-SYNDERGAARD
AP source: Mets’ Syndergaard tests positive for COVID-19
NEW YORK (AP) — Noah Syndergaard’s (SIHN’-dur-gahrdz) return to the majors has hit another snag.
A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that the New York Mets right-hander has tested positive for COVID-19.
Syndergaard was scratched from a rehab start on Sunday. New York manager Luis Rojas said Syndergaard had a “non-baseball-related injury.” He did confirm that Syndergaard has been vaccinated.
Syndergaard is recovering from Tommy John surgery. The Mets are hoping he can rejoin the team as a reliever should they become relevant in the NL East race again.

The 32-year-old Smith was in the final year of his deal with a salary cap slightly above $10 million.

— Ravens running back J.K. Dobbins is expected to miss the upcoming season with a torn ACL. Dobbins left the Ravens’ preseason finale at Washington on Saturday night midway through the first quarter following his injury. The news is a blow for Baltimore, which led the NFL in rushing last season. Dobbins ran for 805 yards and nine touchdowns as a rookie last season.
— The Jets have acquired edge rusher Shaq Lawson from the Texans for a sixth-round pick in next year’s NFL draft, according to a person with direct knowledge of the deal. PGA-BMW CHAMPIONSHIP
Cantlay wins marathon playoff at BMW Championship
OWINGS MILLS, Md. (AP) — Patrick Cantlay emerged as the winner of a lengthy playoff that decided the PGA’s BMW Championship near Baltimore.
Clutch down the stretch and for six dynamic playoff holes, Patrick Cantlay put a fitting end to an epic battle with Bryson DeChambeau by making an 18-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole.
DeChambeau missed four birdie putts to win in regulation and in the playoff. He missed the most important putt of the week from just inside 10 feet to extend the playoff.
They both finished regulation at 27-under 261. No one had ever shot 261 on the PGA Tour and didn’t take home the trophy.
Cantlay earned the sixth and final automatic spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team by winning the tournament. Tony Finau (FEE’-now) was in the sixth spot until he was surpassed by Cantlay’s victory.

In world and national news…
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ida is now a tropical storm after spending 16 hours as a hurricane over Louisiana and Mississippi. Residents are now waiting for daybreak for rescues from flooded areas to begin and damage to be assessed. Power remains out for the entire city of New Orleans, taking down the backup system for the city’s pumps. Ida’s storm surge pushed so much water into the mouth of the Mississippi that it reversed the flow of the mighty river. The hurricane made landfall exactly 16 years to the day after Hurricane Katrina ravaged Louisiana and Mississippi. Its 150-mph winds tied it for the fifth-strongest hurricane to ever hit the mainland.
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Tropical Storm Nora is dropping heavy rains along the Gulf of California after weakening from a hurricane that set off floods and landslides on Mexico’s Pacific coast, caused havoc in Puerta Vallarta and left at least one dead and seven missing. Nora weakened from a Category 1 hurricane at midday Sunday after making a brief land passage just inland from the Mazatlan resort area and then moving back over water and entering the narrow gulf. Though it was barely a tropical storm by late Sunday, forecasters warned that its heavy rains still posed a danger for areas along the gulf. Nora is expected to become a tropical depression by Monday night, but forecasters say moisture from the storm could bring heavy rains by midweek to the U.S. Southwest and central Rockies.
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Fire officials have ordered more evacuations around the Tahoe Basin as crews deal with a two-week old blaze. Officials said Sunday evening the fire was “more aggressive than anticipated” as it continues to edges toward Lake Tahoe. Cal Fire Division Chief Erich Schwab said the Caldor Fire has been growing by about a half-mile each day for the last few days but on Sunday expanded by 2.5 miles. The Caldor Fire is 19% contained after burning nearly 245 square miles. More than 600 structures have been destroyed and at least 18,000 more were under threat.
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Rocket fire has apparently targeted Kabul’s international airport amid the U.S. military’s evacuation. The rockets hit a nearby neighborhood. Monday’s attack came on the eve of the deadline for American troops to withdraw from Afghanistan after the Taliban takeover. No one claimed responsibility for the attack and it wasn’t immediately clear if anyone was hurt. The rockets didn’t halt the steady stream of U.S. military C-17 cargo jets taking off and landing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in the Afghan capital. The Islamic State group launched a devastating suicide bombing last week at one of the airport gates, killing 169 Afghans and 13 U.S. service members.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Biden administration is within reach of achieving one of its goals in Afghanistan. Biden administration officials say the U.S. has the capacity to evacuate the approximately 300 U.S. citizens remaining in Afghanistan who want to leave before President Joe Biden’s Tuesday deadline. That commitment comes as rocket fire in Kabul and another U.S. drone strike against suspected Islamic State militants Sunday highlighted the grave threat in the war’s final days. The steady stream of U.S. military jets taking off and landing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul continued Monday even after rocket fire apparently targeted the airport but hit a nearby neighborhood. U.S. Central Command says there were no U.S. casualties.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — The U.N. atomic agency says North Korea appears to have restarted the operation of its main nuclear reactor used to produce weapons fuels. The annual report by the the International Atomic Energy Agency comes as North Korea openly threatens to enlarge its nuclear arsenal amid long-dormant nuclear diplomacy with the United States. The report refers to a 5-megawatt reactor at the North’s main nuclear complex in Yongbyon, north of Pyongyang. The reactor produces plutonium, one of the two key ingredients to build nuclear weapons along with highly enriched uranium. The agency uses satellite imagery and open source information to monitor developments in North Korea’s nuclear program.
TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are higher as investors interpreted comments from the head of the U.S. Federal Reserve as signaling low interest rates are here to stay for some time. Shares rose in early trading Monday in Europe, while benchmarks in Japan, Australia, South Korea and China finished higher. Regional investors are also looking ahead to data on China’s manufacturing sector. The rally in Asia paralleled a rise on Wall Street last week. The speech by Fed Chair Jerome Powell was key, as U.S. stocks have set records in large part because of the Fed’s massive efforts to prop up the economy.
