Valley City (Chamber 8-30-21) Here’s the latest message to the Valley City community, from Mayor, Dave Carlsrud.
Hello Folks,
Gosh, MORE rain!! It is amazing to me how fast a bit of “Mother Nature’s” water can make the tree leaves plush, grasses greener and makes smiling much easier.
September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The Barnes County Library joins the American Library Association and libraries nationwide reminding people a library card is a “key” to life long learning. Please visit: https://vcbclibrary.org/ or call 845-3821 to learn more about securing your library card.
Our moderating temperatures offer great times to get out and enjoy the scenery. Other choices for you might be exercising or volunteering. Churches, youth groups, fire departments and beautification committees are just a few of the many groups needing help. Whether your talents lie outside, inside or clerical type work, there is a place for you. Please consider volunteering, it is gratifying.
Thank you to our Public Works Dept. A couple of the guys were out “making rounds” and noticed a sump pump running suspiciously often. Through the Automatic Metering Infrastructure they identified there was a broken pipe and no one was home. Great job everyone.
It is wasp season! Their stings can be very painful and in some cases dangerous. Keeping areas “clean” can help rid areas of wasps so please be considerate of the people who remove your garbage by keeping your garbage containers clean and sealed. WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A West Fargo man accused of knocking a man unconscious a week ago has been charged with manslaughter after the victim died over the weekend. Tomas Cervantes was originally charged with aggravated assault in the Aug. 21 incident at the Speedway Event Center in West Fargo. Fifty-three-year-old Roberto Balboa, of West Fargo, died Saturday from his injuries. Police say detectives arrested the 35-year-old Cervantes without incident on Tuesday. His court-appointed attorney, Jay Greenwood, says he just received the case Monday morning and could not provide further information. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 23.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A new quarterly report from North Dakota State University says the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has slowed a bit. The outlook predicts declines in the gross state product which is the measurement of the state’s output, labor force participation and total wages and salaries. The report says total wages and salaries are expected to hold steady with a slight decline in the third quarter of this year. The labor force is predicted to decline in the third quarter with that trend continuing into next year. The unemployment rate is projected to have a slight increase in the third quarter and then return to its declining trend.
BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A federal judge has rejected a lawsuit by the state of Missouri seeking to stop a project that would supply Missouri River water to central North Dakota. The ruling will enable the federal Bureau of Reclamation to move ahead with a water service contract for the Central North Dakota Water Supply Project. The Missouri suit alleged violations of federal policy, including failure by project developers to properly study the project’s environmental impacts and its alternatives. U.S. District Judge Nanette Laughrey ruled against Missouri on all counts Wednesday.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — The Minnesota Court of Appeals has affirmed a decision by state pollution regulators to issue a water quality certification for Enbridge Energy’s Line 3 crude oil pipeline. It’s the latest setback for opponents as the project nears completion. The court ruled that the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency’s approval was “supported by substantial evidence in the record.” Under federal law, the MPCA was required to certify whether the project met state and federal clean water standards. The agency concluded that it did. Nearly 900 Line 3 opponents have been arrested at protests along the route across northern Minnesota and in St. Paul.

DETROIT (AP) — Bailey Ober pitched six solid innings and Josh Donaldson’s two-run homer helped the Minnesota Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 3-2. The game was a makeup from a July 16 rainout and was played in front of a minuscule crowd. The Twins have won three of four. Detroit has lost four of five, scoring only nine runs. Ober held the slumping Tigers’ offense to two runs on five hits in six innings. He struck out five without walking a batter. Alex Colome pitched the ninth for his 10th save. Detroit starter Casey Mize gave up three runs on five hits — including Donaldson’s homer, his 21st of the season.

In world and national news…
KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Taliban fighters watched the last U.S. planes disappear into the night sky and then fired their guns into the air. They were celebrating victory after 20-year insurgency that drove the world’s most powerful military out of one of the poorest countries. The U.S. departure marked the end of a massive airlift in which tens of thousands of people fled Afghanistan, fearful of the return of Taliban rule after the militants took over most of the country and rolled into the capital earlier this month. U.S. Gen. Frank McKenzie announced the completion of America’s longest war, saying the last planes took off from Kabul one minute before midnight Monday in Kabul.
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A fearsome Hurricane Ida has left scores of coastal Louisiana residents trapped by floodwaters and pleading to be rescued, while making a shambles of the electrical grid across a wide swath of the state in the sweltering, late-summer heat. One of the most powerful hurricanes ever to hit the U.S. mainland has now weakened into a tropical storm as it pushes inland over Mississippi with torrential rain and shrieking winds. Two people have died. No major flooding was reported inside the flood control system that protect New Orleans. But a million people were without power and officials warned it could be weeks before the grid is fixed.

(AP) New Orleans police say they have received numerous reports of stealing from stores and other businesses, and made several arrests in the wake of Hurricane Ida. “This will not be tolerated,” Police Chief Shaun Ferguson said at a Monday briefing. He specifically described what was occurring as looting, saying, “This is a state felony, and we will be booking you accordingly.” New Orleans police are working with the Louisiana National Guard to prevent thefts. Police are working 12-hour shifts, and it’s “all hands on deck,” Ferguson said.
(AP) The Education Department says it’s investigating five Republican-led states that have banned mask requirements in schools, saying the policies could amount to discrimination against students with disabilities or health conditions. The department’s office for civil rights sent letters to education chiefs in Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah. Those states have barred schools from requiring masks among students and staff, a move that the department says could prevent some students from safely attending school. It marks a sharp escalation in the Biden administration’s battle with Republican states that say wearing masks should be a personal choice.
BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union has recommended that its 27 nations reinstate restrictions on tourists from the U.S. because of rising coronavirus infections there. The decision by the European Council to remove the U.S. from a safe list of countries for nonessential travel reverses its advice in June, when the bloc recommended lifting restrictions on U.S. travelers before the summer tourism season. The guidance is nonbinding, though, and U.S. travelers should expect a mishmash of travel rules across the continent. National EU governments have the authority to decide whether they keep their borders open to U.S. tourists. Coronavirus deaths have surged in the U.S. recently, rising to over 1,200 a day, and new daily cases are over 150,000 a day.
WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. war in Afghanistan is in its final hours as the military flew more desperate evacuees out of the Afghan capital. The Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate is claiming responsibility for targeting the Kabul airport with rockets, but the U.S. military reports no American casualties. Biden administration officials say the U.S. has the capacity to evacuate the approximately 300 U.S. citizens remaining in Afghanistan who want to leave before President Joe Biden’s Tuesday deadline. The steady stream of U.S. military jets taking off and landing at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul continued Monday even after rocket fire apparently targeted the airport but hit a nearby neighborhood.
NEW YORK (AP) — New York Gov. Kathy Hochul says a momentary power surge disrupted half of the New York City subway system for several hours. Hochul says the breakdown stranded passengers on five trains that were between stations when signalization went down Sunday night. She says the unprecedented breakdown affected more than 80 trains on the subway system’s numbered lines plus the L train from shortly after 9 p.m. Sunday to about 1:30 a.m. Monday. Hochul says service is back to normal for Monday’s commute. She says there will be an investigation into the subway disruption.
The Pentagon says it remains prepared to airlift more Americans from the Kabul airport, even as the evacuation winds down. Pentagon press secretary John Kirby told reporters Monday “there is still time” for remaining Americans to get out. He would not be more specific about the state of the evacuation. He said a total of 5,400 Americans have been airlifted thus far. President Joe Biden has set Tuesday as a deadline for completing the evacuation.
