Valley City  (Chamber 8-30-21)  Here’s the latest message to the Valley City community, from Mayor, Dave Carlsrud.

Hello Folks,

Gosh, MORE rain!! It is amazing to me how fast a bit of “Mother Nature’s” water can make the tree leaves plush, grasses greener and makes smiling much easier.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month. The Barnes County Library joins the American Library Association and libraries nationwide reminding people a library card is a “key” to life long learning. Please visit: https://vcbclibrary.org/ or call 845-3821 to learn more about securing your library card.

Our moderating temperatures offer great times to get out and enjoy the scenery. Other choices for you might be exercising or volunteering. Churches, youth groups, fire departments and beautification committees are just a few of the many groups needing help. Whether your talents lie outside, inside or clerical type work, there is a place for you. Please consider volunteering, it is gratifying.

Thank you to our Public Works Dept. A couple of the guys were out “making rounds” and noticed a sump pump running suspiciously often. Through the Automatic Metering Infrastructure they identified there was a broken pipe and no one was home. Great job everyone.

It is wasp season! Their stings can be very painful and in some cases dangerous. Keeping areas “clean” can help rid areas of wasps so please be considerate of the people who remove your garbage by keeping your garbage containers clean and sealed. For further information, see: https://www.google.com/search?sxsrf=AOaemvJ8uBNv2FQYAGXM_1JICtJUDZKsYA:1630194304385&q=How+to+get+rid+of+wasps&sa=X&sqi=2&ved=2ahUKEwiFu7WD89TyAhUn_rsIHWTTCS4Q1QIwJHoECCUQAQ&biw=1192&bih=644

I hope all of you have a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend.

Thank you to contributors again this week.

“Kind words are short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.”   (Mother Theresa)

Blessings, Be Respectful, Be Kind and Pray,

Dave

Bismarck  (NDHP)   At approximately 5:45 p.m.,  Monday, Fargo PD responded to a report of a possibly suicidal person on the 45th Street overpass to Interstate 29. Interstate 94 was shut down at  this location for this event. Traffic was routed to alternate areas to avoid traffic congestion.
Westbound traffic was diverted north and south onto Interstate 29 and eastbound traffic was routed onto Veteran’s Boulevard.

During this time there was a minor injury crash that occurred on Interstate 94 eastbound near Exit 346 (Sheyenne Street) in which a driver was arrested for driving under the influence of  drugs. This crash resulted in additional traffic delays on Interstate 94. A property damage  crash also occurred on Interstate 94 westbound near the tri-level.

The situation at 45th Street/Interstate 94 was successfully resolved at approximately 7:45 p.m.  and traffic went back to normal. Fargo PD is the lead agency regarding the initial event

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A prominent North Dakota lawmaker will plead guilty to drunken driving rather than proceed to trial. Republican Rep. Scott Louser, who is the House assistant majority leader, was pulled over after crossing from Mandan into Bismarck shortly before 1 a.m. on April 16. A breath test measured Louser’s blood alcohol level at 0.117%, above the legal limit of .008%. Louser’s attorney, Justin Vinje, tells The Bismarck Tribune that his client regrets his decision to drive that night and “takes full responsibility for his actions.” Louser issued a statement the day following his arrest apologizing and said he was taking “the necessary next steps including an evaluation process.” A first DUI offense is a Class B misdemeanor, subject to 30 days in jail and/or a $1,500 fine.

WEST FARGO, N.D. (AP) — A West Fargo man accused of knocking a man unconscious a week ago has been charged with manslaughter after the victim died over the weekend. Tomas Cervantes was originally charged with aggravated assault in the Aug. 21 incident at the Speedway Event Center in West Fargo. Fifty-three-year-old Roberto Balboa, of West Fargo, died Saturday from his injuries. Police say detectives arrested the 35-year-old Cervantes without incident on Tuesday. His court-appointed attorney, Jay Greenwood, says he just received the case Monday morning and could not provide further information. A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for Sept. 23.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — A new quarterly report from North Dakota State University says the state’s economic recovery from the coronavirus pandemic has slowed a bit. The outlook predicts declines in the gross state product which is the measurement of the state’s output, labor force participation and total wages and salaries. The report says total wages and salaries are expected to hold steady with a slight decline in the third quarter of this year. The labor force is predicted to decline in the third quarter with that trend continuing into next year. The unemployment rate is projected to have a slight increase in the third quarter and then return to its declining trend.

Wander Franco extended his on-base streak 30 games with a two-run single. UNDATED (AP) — The National League East and West races are a little closer this morning following the Milwaukee Brewers’ win at San Francisco, coupled with the Los Angeles Dodgers’ victory over Atlanta.

Corbin Burnes furnished an RBI single and held San Francisco to a run and four hits over six innings of the Brewers’ 3-1 verdict over the Giants. Burnes struck out nine and walked none while lowering his ERA to 2.27.

Omar Narvaez (nahr-VY’-ehz) singled home a run and scored a run to help the Brewers hand the Giants their third loss in four games since a three-game sweep of the Mets last week.

The Giants’ lead in the NL West is down to 1 1/2 games over the Dodgers. The Braves find themselves just 3 1/2 games in front of Philadelphia in the NL East. Milwaukee stretched its lead in the NL Central to 9 1/2 games over Cincinnati.

Checking out Monday’s other major league action:

— Bryce Harper hit a first-inning homer and the Phillies earned their fourth straight win by outscoring the Nationals, 7-4. Brad Miller also went deep and Ronald Torreyes (toh-RAY’-ehs) added a bases-loaded triple for Philadelphia, which improved to 7-1 at Nationals Park this season.

— Jon Lester allowed one hit while pitching into the seventh inning of the Cardinals’ 3-1 win over the Reds. Lester retired 16 consecutive batters after giving up his only hit, Kyle Farmer’s homer leading off the second. Paul Goldschmidt put the Redbirds ahead to stay with a two-run shot in the first inning before the Cards closed within 2 1/2 games of the second NL wild card.

— San Diego is within a half-game of the Reds for the second NL wild card after Fernando Tatis (tah-TEES’) Jr. delivered a homer, double and three RBIs in the Padres’ 7-5 win over the Diamondbacks. Chris Paddack gave up one run over 4 2/3 innings in his return from the injured list, his first outing since July 27. Bosox hurlers dealing with coronavirus

UNDATED (AP) — Boston left-hander Martín (mahr-TEEN’) Pérez and right-hander Matt Barnes have become the latest Boston Red Sox players impacted by COVID-19.

Both pitchers were put on the COVID-19 injured list before Monday’s game at Tampa Bay.

Infielder-outfielder Kiké (KEE’-kay) Hernández and infielder Christian Arroyo both tested positive last week and were placed on the COVID-19 injured list on Friday. Manager Alex Cora said Hernández and Arroyo are both feeling OK.

The team is going through the MLB coronavirus protocols that include contact tracing and testing.

Also around the majors:

— Giants starter Alex Wood tested positive for COVID-19 and is experiencing symptoms. Manager Gabe Kapler says Wood isn’t feeling well as he deals with headaches and a sore throat. Right-hander Johnny Cueto (KWAY’-toh) was scratched from his scheduled start for San Francisco on Monday against Milwaukee because of cold and flu-like symptoms. Cueto was put on the COVID-related injured list, but there’s a chance he could start on Tuesday after testing negative.

— Angels two-way sensation Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) will not take the mound for Tuesday’s game against the Yankees in order to give his right hand extra time to heal. Angels manager Joe Maddon also said outfielder Mike Trout is experiencing soreness in his right calf after running the bases on Saturday. Maddon says discussions about shutting down the three-time AL MVP for the rest of the season are rapidly approaching.

— Indians catcher Wilson Ramos will require season-ending surgery for torn ligaments in his left knee. Ramos tore his ACL and MCL in the seventh inning of Cleveland’s win over the Red Sox on Sunday.

Osaka didn’t play at Wimbledon after pulling out of the French Open following the first round for mental health reasons.

Simona Halep (HA’-lehp) and Garbiñe Muguruza (GAHR’-been-yuh MOO’-guh-roo-thah) have pulled out tough two-set victories in the opening round.

— A 20-year-old wild-card entry from Atlanta has tied the women’s U.S. Open serve speed record of 129 mph set by Venus Williams 14 years ago. Alycia Parks hit that mark in her first career Grand Slam main-draw match, a 6-3, 7-5 first-round loss to Olga Danilovic on Court 13.

— Stefanos Tsitsipas (SIHT’-sih-pahs) withstood a tough test from 2012 U.S. Open champion Andy Murray, emerging with a 2-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 victory after nearly five hours. The No. 3 seed from Greece is among the group of young challengers to top-ranked Novak Djokovic (JOH’-koh-vihch).

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-TEXAS-QUARTERBACK

Card to start opener for Longhorns

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — New Texas coach Steve Sarkisian says his starting quarterback for this weekend’s season opener against No. 23 Louisiana-Lafayette will be Hudson Card, who has one career pass completion.

While Card will get the start, Sarkisian said that Casey Thompson will also be in the mix for the No 21 Longhorns.

Card has been wowing his teammates and coaches with his throws in practice since last season. Thompson’s electric performance in the Alamo Bowl, however, had Texas fans thinking they’d found their future quarterback.

Elsewhere in college football:

— Second-ranked Oklahoma and Tulane have announced that their season opener this weekend has been moved from New Orleans to Norman, Oklahoma, in the fallout from Hurricane Ida. The Sooners said conditions in New Orleans were not favorable to host a game this weekend.

VIRUS OUTBREAK-SEC

SEC won’t allow makeup games for short-handed teams

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) — Southeastern Conference teams that don’t have enough available players will have to forfeit games this year.

Saints working 500 miles from home after displaced by Ida

DALLAS (AP) — The displaced New Orleans Saints have begun to practice in Arlington, Texas, after Louisiana was hit hard by Hurricane Ida.

Saints players and staff, along with about 120 family members, relocated to North Texas in advance of the storm.

Coach Sean Payton says the Saints will practice through Wednesday at AT&T Stadium, home of the Dallas Cowboys. That is before a previously planned break before the start of the regular season.

Wentz to sit out as Colts add 3 to COVID-19 list

UNDATED (AP) — The Indianapolis Colts have put starting quarterback Carson Wentz, starting center Ryan Kelly and starting receiver Zach Pascal on the reserve/COVID-19 list. They join two-time Pro Bowl left tackle Eric Fisher on the list after Fisher tested positive last week.

Three-time All-Pro Quenton Nelson came off the list Monday, four days after he was deemed a close contact to Fisher.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— Fully vaccinated players will be required to get tested for COVID-19 weekly instead of every 14 days as part of the revised protocols for the regular season agreed upon by the NFL and NFLPA. The weekly testing applies also for fully vaccinated Tier 1 and 2 staff. There’s an option for a second test for those who want it, according to a memo sent to clubs and obtained by The Associated Press on Monday.

— 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance will miss one week of practice after injuring a finger on his throwing hand during Sunday’s exhibition game. Lance remained in the game after the hit but got more tests done Monday that coach Kyle Shanahan said showed a “small chip fracture” in the finger. Shanahan said Lance is unable to take snaps and needs to rest for about seven days before he can return.

— Lions backup quarterback Tim Boyle broke his right thumb in the team’s preseason finale and needs surgery. Lions coach Dan Campbell says the team is hopeful it is not a season-ending injury.

— The Giants have acquired center Billy Price from the Bengals for defensive lineman B.J. Hill. Neither player was projected to be a starter this season.

— The Bills have dealt defensive end Darryl Johnson to the Panthers for a sixth-round pick in the 2022 draft. Johnson proved to be the odd-man out at a pass-rushing position after Buffalo drafted Greg Rousseau and Carlos Basham.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — After two decades, the United States has completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan, ending America’s longest war and closing a sad chapter in military history. It’s likely to be remembered for colossal failures, unfulfilled promises and a frantic final exit that cost the lives of 13 U.S. service members, some barely older than the war. The last U.S. Air Force evacuation flight from Kabul airport late Monday marked the end of a frantic effort to get out Americans, Afghans and others desperate to escape the Taliban’s return to power 20 years after they were ousted in a U.S.-led invasion. More than 2,400 Americans lost their lives in the long war.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban now have full control of Kabul’s international airport after the last U.S. plane took off, marking the end of America’s longest war. Vehicles with armed Taliban fighters raced back and forth along the airport’s sole runway on the northern military side of the airfield. Before dawn broke on Tuesday, the Taliban walked through hangars on the military side, passing some of the seven CH-46 helicopters the U.S. used in its evacuations before rendering them unusable. On the civilian side of the airport, Taliban fighters draped their white flags over barriers as dozens of suitcases, shoes and clothes were left strewn across the floor from the chaotic evacuation.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana communities battered by Hurricane Ida are facing a new danger: the possibility of weeks without power in the stifling, late-summer heat. Ida ravaged the region’s power grid, leaving the entire city of New Orleans and hundreds of thousands of other Louisiana residents in the dark with no clear timeline on when power would return. Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards said 25,000 utility workers were in the state to help restore electricity, with more on the way. Still, his office described damage to the power grid as “catastrophic,” and power officials said it could be weeks before electricity is restored in some spots.

LUCEDALE, Miss. (AP) — Two people were killed and at least 10 others were injured after a roadway collapsed in Mississippi on Monday night. Troopers told WDSU-TV that both the east and westbound lanes of Highway 26 in George County west of Lucedale collapsed. Cpl. Cal Robertson with the Mississippi Highway Patrol says the collapse is around 50 to 60 feet in length and 20 to 30 feet deep. Robertson believes torrential rains from Hurricane Ida may have caused the collapse. About 8 inches of rain fell in the area. Troopers say the drivers may not have seen the roadway in front of them had disappeared.

HONOLULU (AP) — The mayor of Honolulu says the city will soon require patrons of restaurants, bars, museums, theaters and other establishments to show proof of vaccination or a recent negative test for COVID-19. The rule takes effect on Sept. 13 and is aimed at helping the city beat back a surge in cases from the highly contagious delta variant. Honolulu joins other cities such as New Orleans and New York that have implemented similar requirements. Children under the age of 12 will be exempt. Employees of the establishments will have to show proof of vaccination or undergo weekly testing. Businesses that don’t comply could be fined or shut down.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are mostly higher despite continuing concerns about rising COVID-19 infections in Asia and parts of the U.S. and Europe. Benchmarks are rising in Germany and France in early trading while slipping in Britain. Shares finished higher in Japan, South Korea, Australia and China. Global investors have their eyes on several key U.S. economic reports this week, including consumer confidence on Tuesday and the closely watched monthly employment survey from the Labor Department on Friday. Energy prices were down as the the full impact of Hurricane Ida is still being assessed.
