Jamestown (CSi) The start of  construction of Eagle Flats in Downtown Jamestown is days away from the start of  Demolition.  Safety Fencing went up around the former Eagles building, Tuesday August 31.

Originally, the plan called for the event and starting construction in summer of 2020, but was delayed stemming from COVID-19 pandemic  related issues. The first step was to hired a company to clear the Asbestos, that has now finished.

Eagle Flats will have 33 apartment units at the site of the vacant Eagles building on First Avenue South, in Downtown Jamestown.

Commonwealth Companies had anticipated taking title to the Eagles property in October of 2020, and closing financing in April 2021, followed by construction, with completion now anticipated in 2022.

Eagle Flats will provide ground level parking, and have 33 accessible apartment units over the three floors, with a mix of one, two, and three-bedroom units in the secured building.

Residents will be within walking distance of downtown stores, along with Jamestown Middle School and employment in that area.

North Dakota health officials are confirming 520 new cases of the coronavirus, the highest reported daily total since mid-December. Officials say the increase in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks is due to the highly contagious delta variant of the coronavirus. Over the past two weeks, the rolling average number of daily new cases has increased by nearly 129%. Johns Hopkins University researchers say one in every 519 people in North Dakota tested positive in the past week. The cases posted Tuesday were the most since 575 tests came back positive on Dec. 10, 2020. The update came a day after a small group of North Dakota State University students marched around campus to protest a university rule that requires masks to be worn in classes and hallways.

North Dakota Department of Health dashboard is updated daily by 11 am and includes cases reported through the previous day. The investigations are ongoing and information on the website is likely to change as cases are investigated. The information contained in this dashboard is the most up to date and will be different than previous news releases. This dashboard supersedes information from previous news releases or social media postings.

Yandy Díaz drove in two with a double during a six-run second that pushed the Rays past the Red Sox, 8-5. Wander Franco and Austin Meadows had RBI singles for the AL East leaders, who are 36 games over .500 for the first time in club history.

Boston finished the game without Xander Bogaerts (BOH’-gahrts), who had a first-inning RBI single before leaving in the second following a positive test for COVID-19. The positive test result came hours after the Red Sox announced that pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura tested positive.

Tampa Bay’s division lead is seven games after the second-place Yankees were beaten by the Angels, 6-4.

Jared Walsh put Los Angeles ahead for good with a three-run homer, one inning before Shohei Ohtani (SHOH’-hay oh-TAH’-nee) scored on a double steal. The Yankees lost their fourth in a row since a 13-game winning streak despite homers by Anthony Rizzo and Gary Sanchez.

Also on Tuesday’s major league schedule:

— The A’s also pulled within five games of the AL West lead with the Astros’ 4-0 loss to the Mariners. The game was scoreless until Abraham Toro hit a grand slam in the eighth off Kendall Graveman, who was part a four-player swap that brought Toro to Seattle. — Javier Báez singled in the ninth and scored the winning run as the Mets earned a 6-5 win over the Marlins in the completion of a suspended game. Báez entered the game as a pinch-hitter in the eighth inning and sparked the Mets’ five-run ninth, hours after he and teammate Francisco Lindor (lihn-DOHR’) apologized for their thumbs-down celebration gestures last weekend. The Mets trailed 5-1 until Brandon Nimmo slammed a two-run homer.

TENNIS-US OPEN

Djokovic, Barty advance

NEW YORK (AP) — The No. 1 seeds are off to a good start at the U.S. Open.

Novak Djokovic (JOH’-kah-vihch) has started his bid to make history with a four-set victory over Danish teenager Holger Vitus Nodskov Rune, 6-1, 6-7, 6-2, 6-1.

The top-seeded Djokovic is trying to complete the first calendar-year Grand Slam in men’s tennis since Rod Laver in 1969 and collect a record-breaking 21st major singles championship.

Women’s top-ranked Ash Barty knocked off Vera Zvonareva, 6-1, 7-6 in her first U.S. Open match in two years. The 25-year-old Barty finished with 31 winners, including 11 aces.

Barty skipped last year’s Open because of the pandemic.

Also on Day 2 of the year’s final Grand Slam:

— The first major upset of the tournament was crafted by Maxime Cressy, who dispatched ninth seed Pablo Carreno Busta, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1, 6-4, 7-6. Cressy saved four match points in the fifth-set tiebreaker to knock off the two-time U.S. Open semifinalist.

— American Taylor Fritz has eliminated 14th-seeded Alex de Minaur in four sets to give the host country 13 men in the second round. Fritz won a three-hour match that ended just past midnight by a score of 7-6, 6-2, 1-6, 6-4.

— Jenson Brooksby is one of those 13 American men who advanced, moving into the second round by beating Mikael Ymer 7-5, 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Brooksby reached the finals in Newport and the semifinals in Washington during the leadup to the U.S. Open.

— Alexander Zverev opened his bid for a second straight U.S. Open final appearance by defeating American Sam Querrey, 6-4, 7-5, 6-2 in 100 minutes. Zverev won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics and is one of three players with four titles this season.

— No. 11 Belinda Bencic (BEHN’-chihch) advanced in straight sets, as did fourth seed Karolina Pliskova (PLIHSH’-koh-vah).

— Tenth seed Hubert Hurkacz (HUR’-kahts) was a straight-sets winner on the men’s side, as was No. 22 Reilly Opelka.

— American Mackenzie McDonald pulled off a mild surprise with a straight-sets victory over No. 27 David Goffin.

NFL…

— A person with direct knowledge of the deal has told The Associated Press the Jets have traded tight end Chris Herndon to the Vikings. Herndon spent his first three seasons with New York, catching 71 passes for 796 yards and seven touchdowns.

— The Packers won’t have David Bakhtiari for the start of the season. The All-Pro left tackle is recovering from a torn ACL and won’t be available for at least the first six weeks. That leaves reigning MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers without the player who has protected his blind side for the last nine seasons.

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) — The New England Patriots have shown Cam Newton the door after just one season with the team.

The Pats have released the 2015 NFL most valuable player, paving the way for rookie Mac Jones to open the season as the starting quarterback.

Veteran players say Jones has impressed them in training camp with his work ethic. Jones won a national title last year at Alabama.

The Patriots are trying to rebound from a disjointed 2020 season. Newton finished 7-8 as the starter and the Patriots went 7-9 overall after Tom Brady’s departure.

Elsewhere in the NFL:

— Quarterback Deshaun Watson remains on the Houston Texans’ active roster as the team made cuts to reduce their roster to 53 players. Watson’s future with the team is in question after 22 women filed lawsuits alleging that he sexually assaulted or harassed them. Watson reported to camp to avoid being fined and participated in individual drills but never practiced with the team, watching as Tyrod Taylor ran the offense.

— Saints head coach Sean Payton says the displaced team is exploring the possibility of remaining in the Dallas area for up to a month and opening their regular season against Green Bay in the Cowboys’ home stadium. There are logistical challenges with staffing an NFL game at the Superdome in the near future because of the widespread damage by Hurricane Ida in the New Orleans area. While the Superdome appears to have been spared significant damage, many New Orleans residents have evacuated and officials have advised them not to return for at least another several days.

The 35-year-old Rondo agreed to a buyout with Memphis last Saturday and quickly rejoined a title contender. The Clippers traded Rondo to the Grizzlies two weeks ago along with Patrick Beverley in the deal sending Eric Bledsoe back to LA.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Louisiana residents still reeling from flooding and damage caused by Hurricane Ida are scrambling for food, gas, water and relief from the oppressive heat. Meanwhile, thousands of line workers are toiling to restore electricity and officials have vowed to set up more sites where people can get free meals and cool off. Ida knocked out power to more than a million people, including all of New Orleans. Mayor LaToya Cantrell says she expects the city’s main power company to be able to provide some electricity by Wednesday evening, though she stressed that doesn’t mean a quick citywide restoration.

HOUMA, La. (AP) — Main Street in the Louisiana town of Houma resembles a canyon of rubble after Hurricane Ida. Metal roofs peeled off buildings covered the sidewalks Tuesday, and red bricks from a collapsed building mingled with broken glass on a corner. A once shady square a block away was strewn with broken limbs from giant oaks. Houma resident Michael Cobb says the town thoroughfare had been “such a pretty place.” Houma has seen it share of hurricanes since its founding in 1832. It’s a working-class town of about 33,000 people who make their living off the Gulf. Cobb says people in the town will rebuild and endure.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (AP) — Flames raced across treetops and through drought-stricken vegetation as firefighters scrambled to keep a growing California wildfire from reaching a resort city at the southern tip of Lake Tahoe. The flames forced new evacuations for some residents across the state line in Nevada. South Lake Tahoe is normally bustling with thousands of summer tourists. But streets are eerily empty after rapid growth of the Caldor Fire forced a mass evacuation and triggered hours of gridlocked traffic. The National Weather Service warns critical weather conditions through Wednesday could include extremely low humidity, dry fuel and gusts up to 30 mph.

ADGER, Ala. (AP) — Two electric company employees contracted to work with Alabama Power were killed while working on storm restoration. WBMA-TV reports that the Pike Electric workers were on duty near an intersection in Adger, about 23 miles southwest of Birmingham, just before noon when the accident happened, according to the The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. Pike Electric spokesman James Banner said the company is “interviewing the crew and just doing a full investigation.” He added that the company was praying for the victims’ families. The identities of the two employees will not be released until after their next of kin is notified.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Five people are missing after a U.S. Navy helicopter crashed in the ocean off Southern California during a routine flight from an aircraft carrier. The Navy’s U.S. Pacific Fleet says a search and rescue operation was launched after the MH-60S helicopter crashed around 4:30 p.m. Tuesday about 60 nautical miles off San Diego. One crewmember was rescued. The crash happened while the aircraft was “conducting routine flight operations.” It was assigned to the USS Abraham Lincoln. Officials say “multiple Coast Guard and Navy air and surface assets” are involved in the search. No other details are immediately available.

(AP)  A Texas law banning most abortions in the state took effect at midnight, but the Supreme Court has yet to act on an emergency appeal to put the law on hold. If allowed to remain in force, the law would be the most dramatic restriction on abortion rights in the United States since the high court’s landmark Roe v. Wade decision legalized abortion across the country in 1973. The Texas law, signed by Republican Gov. Greg Abbott in May, would prohibit abortions once a fetal heartbeat can be detected, usually around six weeks and before most women even know they’re pregnant.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Joe Biden has defended the way the U.S. ended its 20-year “forever war” in Afghanistan. Biden calls the military airlift to extract some 120,000 Afghans, Americans and other allies an “extraordinary success.” More than 100 Americans and thousands of Afghans were left behind, but Biden says diplomatic and other efforts will continue to get them out. Biden’s speech Tuesday from the White House came 24 hours after the departure of the last American aircraft from Kabul. Biden says he “was not going to extend this forever war.” And he says he “was not going to extend a forever exit.”
