(AP)  Pfizer says its COVID-19 vaccine works for children ages 5 to 11. The vaccine maker said Monday it plans to seek authorization for this age group soon in the U.S., Britain and Europe. The vaccine made by Pfizer and its German partner BioNTech already is available for anyone 12 and older. But many parents are anxiously awaiting vaccinations for their younger children. Pfizer studied a lower dose of its two-dose vaccine in more than 2,200 kindergartners and elementary school-aged kids. The kids developed coronavirus-fighting antibody levels just as strong as teenagers and young adults.

Valley City  (Chamber  (9-30-21) The latest message to Valley City residence from Mayor Dave Carlsrud:

“ Isn’t North Dakota weather crazy? The 30 and 40-degree temperature variances continually amaze me. Some of the trees are turning to their fall colors which seems too soon though the 1st day of fall is Wednesday the 22nd.

Perhaps like many of you, I am a bit fatigued with the COVID-19 variant coming around again. That said, it seems to be particularly serious for those who are unvaccinated as 90-some percent of patients in ICU’s are unvaccinated. I don’t like wearing a mask either, but if needed to protect young people who aren’t eligible for the vaccine, I will, and I hope you will too. To protect your family, friends and fellow workers, please get VACCINATED against COVID-19.

Last week I was fortunate to attend the North Dakota League of Cities (NDLC) Annual Conference with a number of our city workers. There was a plethora of session topics from legal issues to the American Rescue Plan to energy to funding to cultural diversity and many others. It was very educational.

A point of interest, Blake Crosby, NDLC Executive Director, announced his upcoming retirement. Blake has been a “champion” for all North Dakota communities. His working relationship with legislators is superb which allows our cities’ needs to be heard and understood. Thank you Blake, your efforts are appreciated and you will be missed.

Many of you bring your utilities payments to City Hall. While you are welcome to do so, are you aware you can utilize Auto-Pay through your bank? It will save you time and money, as there is no charge for the Auto-Pay convenience. Call or stop in at City Hall and learn all about it.

Thank you to contributors again this week.”

Blessings, Respect Others, Be Kind and Pray,

Dave Carlsrud

Mayor

Valley City, ND.

Doug Burgum

BISMARCK, N.D. (SEPT. 20, 2021) – Gov. Doug Burgum released the following statement Monday after the Biden administration announced it is extending restrictions on nonessential travel at the U.S.-Canada border for another month, until Oct. 21. Canada reopened its border to vaccinated U.S. citizens for nonessential travel on Aug. 9.

Burgum says,  “Again without an explanation from the White House, it’s impossible to know what’s driving this baffling decision to extend these unnecessary restrictions on land-based travelers from Canada – when Canada’s vaccination rate is substantially higher than the United States’ – while making accommodations for foreign visitors traveling by air to our country.  We won’t relent in our efforts to press the Biden administration, as we’ve done repeatedly including in our July letter with four border states and provinces, to lift these needless restrictions that continue to hurt communities and citizens on both sides of the border as well as our retail and tourism businesses that rely on Canadian travelers.”

Bismarck  (CSi) A group of 15 firefighters from the Williston, Williston Rural, Bismarck Rural and Dickinson Fire Departments returned Monday after two weeks supporting Hurricane Ida recovery efforts along the Gulf Coast. Gov. Doug Burgum this month approved an Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC) request from the state of Louisiana, allowing North Dakota’s firefighters to assist with structural fire suppression missions there.

After traveling more than 1,800 miles, the first North Dakota team began its mission earlier this month by being assigned to the volunteer fire department in Lockport, Louisiana, south of Baton Rouge. While there, the team responded to carbon monoxide calls, fire alarms and structure fires. They also assisted local communities with tree clean-up and debris removal and unloading supply trailers.

FARGO, N.D. (AP) — The latest bout of legal wrangling over the collection of North Dakota oil and gas royalties has been won by the energy industry, over a bill it promoted and was passed by the 2021 state Legislature. A state judge last week ruled in favor of the law that limits how much interest companies have to pay for unpaid oil and gas royalties. It also sets a statute of limitations on how far back they have to pay. The decision came after a state agency argued that the legislation is unconstitutional. A Fargo attorney who has successfully argued oil and gas mineral rights cases said last month the issue is likely headed to the state Supreme Court, regardless of the opinion by McKenzie County Judge Robin Schmidt.

BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) — North Dakotans are accustomed to seven digit phone dialing because the entire state is under the 701 area code. State officials want to keep it that way. North Dakota is projected to run out of numbers under the 701 area code by 2026. So the Public Service Commission is seeking permission from federal regulators to free up unused phone numbers in order to keep just one area code. North Dakota joins two other states with a single area code, New Hampshire and Maine, in petitioning the FCC to allow them more leniency in assigning phone numbers to service areas.

WILLISTON, N.D. (AP) — Police in Williston are investigating a shooting that left a man in critical condition. The crime occurred early Sunday morning. Officers found a 22-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds. Police say they have taken “subjects” into custody, but did not say how many people have been detained. The victim has not yet been identified. The North Dakota Highway Patrol, Williams County Sheriff’s Office and Williston Fire Department assisted police.

MLB…

UNDATED (AP) — The Atlanta Braves have moved three games ahead of Philadelphia for first place in the NL East.

The Braves erupted for seven runs in the fifth inning of an 11-4 drubbing of the Diamondbacks.

Freddie Freeman hit an RBI double and a run-scoring single in the fifth. Adam Duvall delivered a two-run homer and Austin Riley had three hits and three RBIs in Atlanta’s second straight win since a four-game skid.

The Orioles avoided their 102nd loss as John Means scattered four hits over 6 2/3 innings of their 2-0 shutout of the Phillies. Cole Sulser and Tyler Wells finished up the combined four-hitter as the Birds kept Bryce Harper hitless with two strikeouts in three at-bats.

Neither team scored after Ranger Suarez gave up consecutive RBI singles to Pedro Severino and Ryan McKenna in the first inning.

Checking out Monday’s other major league action:

— Nolan Arenado slammed a two-run homer in the first inning to set the tone in the Cardinals’ ninth consecutive win, 5-2 over the Brewers. Yadier Molina provided a pair of RBI singles, including the go-ahead hit in the sixth. Winning pitcher Jon Lester allowed three hits over six innings, including solo shots by Avisail (av-ih-sah-EEL’) Garcia and Luis Urias (oo-REE’-uhs) in the second inning.

— The Reds erased a five-run deficit and beat the Pirates, 9-5 to stay three games behind the Cardinals for the second NL wild card. Joey Votto (VAH’-toh) tied the game in the fifth inning with his second homer of the night, Eugenio (ay-oo-HEH’-nee-oh) Suarez followed with a go-ahead shot. Nick Castellanos (kas-tee-AH’-nohs) drove in three runs and Kyle Farmer also went deep for Cincinnati.

— Aaron Judge and Gleyber (GLAY’-bur) Torres hit RBI singles in a three-run third while the Yankees were building a 4-0 lead in a 4-3 win over the Rangers. Gary Sanchez homered as the Yankees bounced back from consecutive losses to the Indians by a combined 22-4 margin. The Yankees received 4 2/3 scoreless innings from the bullpen and within a half-game of Toronto for the second AL wild card.

— The Blue Jays led 2-0 until Yandy Diaz belted a three-run homer in the fifth inning of the Rays’ 6-4 victory. Diaz had three hits and scored twice to back Shane Baz, who worked five innings to earn his first major league win. The Jays fell to 13-4 this month despite homers by Teoscar (tay-AHS’-kur) Hernandez, Lourdes Gurriel (gur-ee-EHL’) Jr. and Marcus Semien.

— Seattle’s 4-2 victory at Oakland keeps the Athletics two games behind for the second AL wild card and brings the Mariners within three games. Kyle Seager was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run single in the decisive third inning. Mitch Haniger doubled twice and winning pitcher Tyler Anderson allowed just one run and four hits while fanning seven over seven innings.

— Marwin González hit a grand slam and the Astros moved closer to the AL West title with a 10-0 victory over the Angels. Framber Valdez pitched seven innings of six-hit ball in Houston’s fifth victory in six games. Martin Maldonado launched a three-run homer and José Siri hit a leadoff homer as the Astros cut their magic number to six for winning their division.

— White Sox hurler Carlos Rodon was pulled after allowing two runs over three innings of a 4-3 loss at Detroit. Harold Castro’s eighth-inning single broke a 3-all tie for Detroit. Chicago’s magic number to clinch the division dropped to two when second-place Cleveland was swept by Kansas City in a doubleheader.

— Salvador Perez slammed his 46th home run and the Royals grabbed the opener of their doubleheader by whipping the Indians, 7-2. Perez tied for the major league lead in homers, became the RBI leader with 113 and broke Johnny Bench’s record among players who appeared in at least 75% of his team’s games at catcher. Hunter Dozier and Andrew Benintendi also hit two-run homers to support Brady Singer, who limited the Indians to two runs over seven innings.

— The Royals also were 4-2 winners for a sweep of the twinbill at Cleveland. Five hurlers combined on a four-hitter in the second game. Hanser Alberto provided an RBI single and a run-scoring grounder.

— Jazz Chisholm Jr. homered twice before scoring from third on a wild pitch in the 10th inning to give the Marlins an 8-7 victory over the Nationals. Jesús Sánchez homered and stunned even himself in the fourth inning when the Marlins right-fielder barehanded Lane Thomas’ fly ball.

MLB-NEWS

Yankees activate Severino

UNDATED (AP) — Pitcher Luis Severino has been activated by the New York Yankees and is in position to make his first major league appearance in nearly two years. Yankees manager Aaron Boone says he plans to use Severino out of the bullpen.

The 27-year-old right-hander hasn’t pitched in the majors since undergoing Tommy John surgery before last season.

The two-time All-Star and 19-game winner in 2018 was limited by shoulder soreness to three appearances in 2019.

Also in the majors:

— Outfielder-turned-reliever Anthony Gose was called up from the minors by the Indians, this time as a hard-throwing lefty reliever. The 31-year-old Gose last played in the majors in 2016 with Detroit. Gose pitched 1 2/3 innings on Monday against the Royals, throwing 39 pitches, seven zoomed into triple digits. He allowed one run and one hit.

NFL-PACKERS/LIONS

Packers rout Lions behind Rodgers, Jones

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — The Green Bay Packers were able to shake off their 35-point loss to the New Orleans Saints in the season opener.

Aaron Jones caught three of Aaron Rodgers’ four touchdown passes and rushed for a fourth score in the Packers’ 35-17 win over the Detroit Lions.

Rodgers went 22 of 27 for 255 yards and surpassed John Elway for 10th all-time in passing yards with 51,633. Rodgers has followed up each of the Packers’ last five regular-season losses by throwing four touchdown passes and no interceptions in his next game.

Jones became the first Packers running back to catch three touchdown passes in a game since Andy Uram against the Chicago Cardinals in 1942. He had 17 carries for 67 yards and six catches for 48 yards.

Jared Goff completed 13 of his first 14 passes but struggled the rest of the way as the 0-2 Lions blew a 17-14 halftime lead.

NFL-NEWS

— The Colts won’t know until later this week whether quarterback Carson Went will play at Tennessee after spraining both ankles in Sunday’s loss to the Rams. Colts coach Frank Reich (ryk) says he does not yet have a timeline for a return. Wentz hurt his left ankle early in the game and injured his right ankle midway through the fourth quarter, causing him to miss the rest of the game. Jacob Eason is expected to make his first NFL start if Wentz can’t go against the Titans.

— Broncos coach Vic Fangio wouldn’t confirm reports Monday that fourth-year inside linebacker Josey Jewell is out for the season with a torn pectoral muscle. Fangio said they team is awaiting a final prognosis, but teammates were talking as though they’d be without their defensive play-caller for some time. Denver also lost Pro Bowl outside linebacker Bradley Chubb on Sunday when he aggravated a right ankle injury that’s been bothering him for a month.

UNDATED (AP) — Cleveland Browns wide receiver Jarvis Landry could miss multiple games after spraining his knee in Sunday’s win over Houston.

Landry hurt his MCL while being tackled at the end of a 9-yard completion on Cleveland’s second offensive play.

Coach Kevin Stefanski said Landry will be “week to week” but provided no other specifics on a timeline for his return.

— Raiders quarterback Derek Carr underwent tests on his injured right ankle, but coach Jon Gruden expects him to be able to play this Sunday against Miami. Carr got hurt after throwing a TD pass to Foster Moreau in the third quarter of Sunday’s 26-17 victory over the Steelers. After being down on the turf for a bit, Carr got taped up in the medical tent and didn’t miss a play.

— Houston quarterback Tyrod Taylor is day to day with a hamstring injury as the Texans face a quick turnaround with a Thursday night game against Carolina. If Taylor can’t play, Deshaun Watson won’t be an option. Coach David Culley says Watson will be inactive for Thursday’s game just as he has been for the first two games.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-CFP EXPANSION

CFP expansion proposal on table this week

UNDATED (AP) — The College Football Playoff management committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday. The committee will discuss the feedback members have received from campuses since a 12-team expansion plan was unveiled in June.

The 10 major college football conference commissioners and Notre Dame’s athletic director get together this week and plan to reconvene early next week in Chicago. The second meeting will include university presidents who make up the CFP’s board of managers.

A four-person subcommittee has come up with a 12-team format that would include six conference champions and six at-large teams. Games would be played both on campus and at bowl sites.

Also in college football:

— Florida coach Dan Mullen says quarterback Anthony Richardson will “probably do a little bit more at practice” this week before the 11th-ranked Gators host Tennessee. Richardson was held out of Saturday’s 31-29 loss to Alabama as a precaution after the redshirt freshman strained his right hamstring near the end of an 80-yard run the previous week.

— Miami quarterback D’Eriq King has a shoulder injury that will need further evaluation on Tuesday. The Hurricanes fell out of the AP Top 25 on Sunday for the first time this season.

NHL-NEWS

Coyotes submit proposal to build arena in Tempe

UNDATED (AP) — The Arizona Coyotes have proposed a $1.7 billion development in Tempe that will include a hockey arena. Renderings by the Coyotes include proposed restaurants, shops and apartments on a 46-acre tract of land.

The team says the arena would be funded by private investors but would seek city sales tax revenues to help pay for $200 million in additional costs, including infrastructure work.

Elsewhere in the NHL:

— Longtime Devils center Travis Zajac (ZAY’-jak) has signed a one-day contract with the team so he could retire as a member of the organization where he spent all but 27 games of his 15-year career. The 36-year-old Zajac plans to remain with the Devils in a number of roles on and off the ice. Zajac provided 203 goals and 552 points in 1,037 career regular-season games, including his short stint with the Islanders last spring.

In world and national news…

NEW YORK (AP) — President Joe Biden plans to use his first address before the U.N. General Assembly to reassure the international community of American leadership on the global stage. In Tuesday’s address, Biden will call on allies to move quickly and cooperatively to address the festering issues of the COVID-19 pandemic, climate change and human rights abuses. The president continues to wield his mantra “America is back” — presidential shorthand meant to highlight his promise to take a dramatically different tack with allies than his predecessor Donald Trump. But Biden is facing a healthy measure of skepticism from allies at the start of a week of high-level diplomacy.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are mixed, with European benchmarks and U.S. futures higher after a choppy day of trading in Asia. Worries over heavily indebted Chinese real estate developer Evergrande are weighing on sentiment. Tokyo fell 2.2%, while markets were closed in Taiwan, Shanghai and South Korea. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng recouped earlier losses, gaining 0.5%. Shares also rose in Australia. Analysts said fears the damage from a property bust in China could ripple worldwide were drawing on memories of past financial crises such as the bursting of the Japanese “bubble” economy.

DEL RIO, Texas (AP) — The options remaining for thousands of Haitian migrants straddling the Mexico-Texas border are narrowing. The United States government is ramping up to an expected six expulsion flights to Haiti Tuesday and Mexico has begun busing some away from the border. U.S. officials say more than 6,000 Haitians and other migrants have been removed from an encampment around a bridge in Del Rio, Texas. They also defended a strong response that included immediately sending migrants back to their impoverished Caribbean country and faced criticism for the use of horse patrols to stop them from entering the town.

LONDON (AP) — Johnson & Johnson released data showing that a booster dose to its one-shot coronavirus vaccine provides a strong immune response months after people receive a first dose. The study’s results haven’t yet been peer-reviewed. J&J said in a statement Tuesday that it ran two early studies in people previously given its vaccine and found that a second dose produced an increased antibody response in adults from age 18 to 55.

TORONTO (AP) — Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal Party has secured victory in parliamentary elections but failed to get the majority he wanted in a vote that focused on the coronavirus pandemic but that many Canadians saw as unnecessary. Trudeau entered Monday’s election leading a stable minority government that wasn’t under threat of being toppled. But he was hoping Canadians would reward him with a majority for navigating the pandemic better than many other leaders. The opposition was relentless in accusing him of holding the vote for his own personal ambition. In the end, the gamble did not pay off. The Liberal Party was leading or elected in 156 seats, short of the 170 needed for a majority. The Conservatives were leading or elected in 121 seats.

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — The Taliban have expanded their interim Cabinet by naming more ministers and deputies, but failed to appoint any women. They doubled down on a hard-line course despite the international outcry that followed their presentation of an all-male government earlier this month. A spokesman told reporters in Kabul on Tuesday that the Taliban are trying to devise rules for allowing girls and women back to schools and jobs in line with Islamic law, but didn’t say when that might happen. Currently only elementary schools girls are allowed to go to school. The world has said that recognition of a Taliban-led government would be linked to the treatment of women and minorities.
