Bismarck  (NDDoH)   – The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorized the use of Pfizer-BioNTech’s COVID-19 vaccine for a single booster dose, to be administered at least six months after completion of the primary series for certain individuals.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) finalized COVID-19 booster dose recommendations for people who previously received Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. The following individuals are recommended to receive a booster dose:

  • people 65 years and older and residents in long-term care settings should receive a booster shot of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer primary series,
  • people aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions should receive a booster shot of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer primary series,
  • people aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions may receive a booster shot of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks, and
  • people aged 18-64 years who are at increased risk for COVID-19 exposure and transmission because of occupational or institutional setting may receive a booster shot of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at least 6 months after their Pfizer primary series, based on their individual benefits and risks.

These recommendations are ONLY for those who originally received the two-dose series of Pfizer’s COVID vaccine. Booster doses might be recommended in the future for those who received COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Moderna or Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). There is not yet data available to recommend mixing vaccine brands or to recommend additional doses of Moderna or Janssen vaccine.

This recommendation does not mean that COVID-19 vaccines are not working. Hospitalization rates are ~10-22 times higher in unvaccinated adults compared to vaccinated adults. Vaccinated people are five times less likely to get sick from COVID-19, compared to those who are unvaccinated. Vaccine effectiveness has declined against infection (having COVID-19 symptoms) but is still highly protective against hospitalization and death. Effectiveness against hospitalization has declined for those 65 and older.

Booster doses may not be available until later next week. Healthcare providers will need to educate staff and update protocols based on this new recommendation. The NDDoH has planned with long-term care facilities to ensure they have access to booster doses in the coming weeks. Please. stay tuned for more information. As a reminder, people may be vaccinated against influenza at the same time as receiving a COVID-19 booster.

Information on COVID-19 vaccine providers and clinics near you can be found on the NDDoH COVID Vaccine Locator page. Individuals can also contact the NDDoH public health hotline at 1-866-207-2880 for questions related to COVID-19 and for assistance in scheduling a vaccine appointment.

Prosecutors have to decide whether they will appeal first. That’s a question that comes as President Joe Biden personally opposes capital punishment and executions nationwide are on hold. Chiefs coach Reid taken to hospital after loss

UNDATED (AP) — Kansas City coach Andy Reid was taken from Arrowhead Stadium to the hospital after the Chiefs’ 30-24 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The Chiefs would only say that Reid was feeling “ill” after the NFL Network reports the coach was being hospitalized.

Reid coached the duration of the game and addressed the team in the locker room. But he sent assistant coach Dave Toub to speak to reporters. That is a job that Reid customarily handles.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes says Reid “seemed fine” when he spoke to the team after the game.

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Denny Hamlin has earned his first career victory at Las Vegas Motor Speedway by holding off Chase Elliott and kicking off the second round of the NASCAR Cup Series playoffs.

Hamlin got his first victory of the season in the playoff opener at Darlington three weeks ago in his Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota. A breakthrough victory in Vegas proves Hamlin has emerged as a serious contender for his first Cup Series championship after a 17-year career filled with near-misses.

Kyle Busch finished third on his hometown track, followed by Martin Truex Jr. and Ryan Blaney as the 12 remaining playoff drivers began the second round and the final seven races of the season. Hamlin, Busch and Truex put Joe Gibbs Racing in three of the top four spots.

In world and national news…

WASHINGTON (AP) — Democrats are promising historic investments across all levels of education as they push ahead with President Joe Biden’s $3.5 trillion rebuilding plan. The proposal includes universal prekindergarten, two years of free community college and expanded child care subsidies. Biden’s “Build Back Better” plan touches nearly every aspect of American life, but education serves as a bedrock. Advocates call it a landmark bill that makes improvements along the entire arc of an academic career. Republicans decry it as a step toward socialism that will strain the economy. Democrats are trying to pass it on their own, but cuts may be needed to win support within the party.

BEIJING (AP) — Global shoppers face possible shortages of smartphones and other goods ahead of Christmas after power cuts to meet government targets forced Chinese factories to shut down and left some households in the dark. In the northeastern city of Liaoyang, 23 people were hospitalized with gas poisoning after ventilation in a metal casting factory was shut off following a power outage, according to state broadcaster CCTV. No deaths were reported. The disruption to China’s vast manufacturing industries during one of their busiest seasons reflects the ruling Communist Party’s struggle to balance economic growth with efforts to rein in pollution and emissions of climate-changing gases.

LONDON (AP) — Lines of cars formed at British gas stations for a fourth day on Monday, as the government mulled bringing in the army to help ease supply disruption triggered by a shortage of truck drivers. Brian Madderson, chairman of the Petrol Retailers Association, said training has been taking place “in the background” for military personnel to drive tankers. The government says it has “no plans at the moment” to deploy troops. The haulage industry says the U.K. is short as many as 100,000 truckers, due to a perfect storm of factors including the coronavirus pandemic and an exodus of foreign workers following Brexit. The driver drought is contributing to empty supermarket shelves and shuttered gas pumps.

NEW YORK (AP) — The nation’s business economists now expect slower economic growth this year due to the widespread delta variant of the coronavirus, while also saying the economy could improve more quickly next year as vaccinations become more accepted. In a survey being released Monday, the National Association of Business Economists found that its panel now expects full-year economic growth of 5.6%, down from a forecast for 6.7% growth in NABE’s previous survey in May. However, economists raised their forecast for 2022 economic growth to 3.5% from a previous outlook of 2.8%. Inflation should remain at elevated levels through the fourth quarter before moderating next year, the survey’s panelists predict.

TOKYO (AP) — Global shares are mixed as fears of further waves of coronavirus outbreaks cloud the economic outlook, tempering gains. European shares rose in early trading Monday while shares in Asia were mixed. U.S. futures were higher. Japan’s ruling party holds an election this week to choose a leader, who is likely to be the next prime minister. All the candidates are promising further fiscal stimulus measures to help kick-start growth stalled by the pandemic. In Singapore, further COVID-19 restrictions began in an attempt to curb the virus’ spread, as daily new cases topped last year’s peak.

WASHINGTON (AP) — It’s a consequential week for President Joe Biden’s agenda as Democratic leaders work to delicately trim back his $3.5 trillion “Build Back Better” package and pass legislation to avoid a federal shutdown. The Senate has a test vote set Monday to keep the government running and avert a federal debt default. But that package stands to run into a blockade by Republican senators. Funding runs out after Thursday’s fiscal year-end deadline. Behind the scenes, Biden and Democratic leaders are working to round up votes for his bigger package. An expected House vote Monday on a $1 trillion infrastructure bill was postponed to Thursday.
